I am using MBSA 2.1 on XP Home SP3. I have a single desktop pc connected to
the internet via a USB cable modem. Can anyone how to get MBSA to scan the
local machine it is running on?!

Regards,

Arne

Apologies, the subject should have said, the error message was "Could not
resolve the computer name: \*error*. Please specify computer name,
domain\computer, or an IP address."

Also I have missed out the verb below(!), I meant to say, can anyone explain
how to get MBSA to scan the local machine it is already running on?!

Thank you for posting this to the MBSA newsgroup.

This issue is caused by File and Print Sharing not being enabled - which is
called out in the MBSA help file as a prerequisite. Enable File and Print
Sharing (which enables the required Server service) and the problem should
be resolved. I hope that helps...

Many thanks for the info. I have installed and enabled File and Print
Sharing. I have run MBSA again, this helped show computer name, but the scan
still failed. Error message virtually same, now showing "Could not resolve
the computer name: \NAME. Please specify computer name, domain\computer, or
an IP address." << where 'NAME' is the name of my computer.

Any thoughts?

This is almost always an issue with the prerequisites needed to perform an
MBSA scan not being enabled. Please be sure to click the MBSA Help and
review the System Requirements. It still sounds like the server and/or the
workstation service is not enabled.

I have the same issue as well. I believe the Workstation service has been
renamed in XP, as I do not see it in the list of services. It should be
enabled by default anyway. How do you enable/verify file and print sharing is
set properly? I am able to map shares to other computers, so I suspect this
is not my issue. Any suggestions on how to resolve this. The help given is
rather vague.
