I just learnt that he passed away on Friday. I understand he went to
bed and didn't wake up. I was friends with him on Facebook, which is
how I learned of it.

I was wondering what he is up to as I hadn't seen him here for a while.
It'll be strange without him. He and I used to wind each other up
sometimes but I'll miss his presence here. His madcap sense of humour
and conspiracy theories were a source of entertainment.

Ah... He wasn't all that old either (AIUI).

RIP, Wainwright. I cannot say we agreed on much but you were certainly
an amusing read at times.

A tragedy waiting to happen I'm afraid!

Drug addict, heavy smoker, alcoholic, in and out of rehab as long as I knew of him. What other destiny awaited him?

He was always going to pull himself together! I'm afraid I lost patience and in my last communication with him on here,I warned that he would be found one winter morning face down in the snow. That was a warning I didn't wish that on him but there are some people who just can't be helped and he was one of them.

The only help that would have been of any use, would simply not be permitted under HR legislation:- a boot camp on a Royal Navy-quarantined island, where he would follow a strict regime of PT and healthy eating, with a work schedule, enforced hygiene and no access to drugs or alcohol for 18 months.

The fear of a repeat 18 months on that island followed by a further 18 months.

Police street cautions to not a bit of good either except that it gives the cop an opportunity to search him in the hope of finding something worthwhile.

If he must be let go, give him 20 lashes first.

At least they will keep a low profile.

That might work for people whose excessive consumption can be stopped if
sufficient consequences become readily apparent. However, it won't stop
everyone.

I don't think that would make a blind bit of difference other than
providing gratification for the sanctimonious.

Hopefully, the memories of how worthless they used to feel, in contrast to how they now feel. Being able to wake of a morning and feel energised and full of vigour, rather than dispairing at the hopelessness of not having the will to "break the chain".

I can understand why you're upset, you've just lost one of the few
people on here who thinks you've got more than half a brain. Never mind,
you've always got your delusions to sustain you.

BTW, if you've got time to waste defending Wainwright, why don't you
deal with the questions you've run away from in that thread you started
on education - 'school, the factory method'?

Looks like you've sounded off again with half-baked opinions and once
more have had to run away and hide.

I was wondering what he is up to as I hadn't seen him here for a

About as 'threatened' as Denis Healey's dead sheep.
Now, off you run to Google and get a bit more shallow knowledge to copy

I argued with Andy along similar lines but have since arrived at the
point of view that it wasn't so much a case of making lifestyle choices
but rather suffering with an illness. I remember some of the self-made
videos he put on Youtube when he was going through what seemed like a
particularly bad episode; I don't think anyone chooses to live like that.

Not necessarily. If left wing politicians stopped feeding the sense of
entitlement of the underlasses and instead we instilled good values
backed by a judicial system that functioned properly, we'd probably have
a nicer society and save money.

I don't hate my work but I would certainly prefer to not pay for other
people's lifestyle choices including subsiding baby factories, people
who fraudulently claim disability living allowance or those who would
rather eat from soup kitchens and buy Nike trainers with their dole profit.

So sorry to hear that. I had him on my Google circle after he added me, having been a regular hear a fair few years ago now and had some interesting conversations with him but didn't really talk outside of this group. I remember his drug use being considered comment-worthy as a non-sequitur during debates, and it’s sad to hear he struggled with it so and it took his life in the end. You were a proper friend to him from the sounds of it and did what you could, but addiction is such a powerful thing, there's no magic cure is there. I am sure he would have appreciated that you cared about him, even if some tough words were said and perhaps pride got in the way of being able to convey that appreciation to you at the end.

This isn't that bad...
