a few years.
Who remembers CKXL 1140, that radio who had one of the highest
Canadian ratings in the 70s and early 80s? All that
cool music they played then? Cars, Gary Numan, Devo, B52s, Pretenders,
Bob Welch, ELO, Boomtown Rats? I am after all talking the early days of
New Wave and such.
How 'bout CJAY 92's early days? Dieter Staschow's very
informative album rock show: Sterotypes? Used to be on every
weekday evening at 6 PM for an hour, way informative.
The clubs and bars then? The Beacon on 16th Ave? the Polo Club
on 10th Ave? Majestic (Magic Stix)?
Those risque strip clubs. I believe the Pink Panther was one of
them, I need help here.

Dino's Hideaway, Blue Mouse, and Marco Polo's (topless) on Center street north. These were the strip clubs in Calgary in those days. The Panther, Mouse, and Hideaway were non-alcohol clubs. One point of interest, the late great Ralph Klein was a guest judge at the first Miss Nude Calgary competition held at the Pink Panther.

I remember when we had Blackbeard's restaurant ship downtown- the Tiki Tiki restaurant- The Jean Joint all jeans- Thrifty's jeans - Husky Tower was the tallest building downtown- Radio station CKXL and 66 CFR [miss them] Tivoli Theatre cost 50 cents that included admission, drink, popcorn- Drive In where you hung speaker on window and the Dusk to Dawn all nighters -bus fare was 10 cents- milk delivery to your home and houses had milk shuts to place the milk in I could go on and on. loved it all!

CKXL = Yellow Sun Spots in Car windows and on Bumpers.

*FM 95.9* Now FM 96 had a started in a small studio in Westbrook Mall
where the hair salon is now.
Later CKXL & FM 95.9 amalgamated into Moffat Broadcasting
That which included CHED in Edmonton.
GSL used to be on the corner of 8 Ave & Centre St. S
Calgary Motor products was were the last greyhound station used to be at 4
Ave & 1 st sw.
Union Dairy was right acroos the street from the new Telus Convention Centre
on 7 Ave just down from the York Hotel.
The Richmond Canadian Tire site was originally a Horse riding stables and
Pony Palace where kids could go riding with there parents.

My family moved here in 1905 my grandmother mother father and myself went to the same school so I know a little Calgary history. I do know that back in the 60's the Pink Panther was a go-go club . Girls danced in cages with the white boots and mini dresses I know I was one but there was no stripping going on at that time . My bf owned the club so I could dance all night and not be bothered while he worked

Give you a little history you don't find in the Glenbow Museum Do you know where the hookers took their johns in the 1930's ? During the "Dirty 30's there were several women who had to turn to the streets as they couldn't find jobs if they didn't have someone to help them. There was no welfare back then. The women use to sit in Chinatown and drink coffee the soldiers, mostly soldiers would come in and they would go to Centre Street hill and have a little fun In the 40's several girls lived in the Commercial Block on 7th Avenue and 1st

You have to admit, the city's changed quite a bit. Global TV was CHCT channel 2
on Rideau Road in the old Sea cadet hall in the 50s right up until 1981. Does
anyone remember the gruff old sportscaster Henry Viney on CFCN News? Always had
a cigar on air.

I grew up at the thorougbred racetrack at the Stampede and went to Stampede Wrestling every Friday. Stu and my dad were connected as well as many of the sportscasters in town. When I went to SAIT from 1972-1974 Henry Viney taught a couple of courses in the Television/Radio program. He lived close to our house and on his teaching days he would give me a ride. I smelled like cigar smoke all day even if he did not have one going in the car. We had great chats about Buffalo Stadium which hosted baseball and of course wrestling, horse racing and other sports. His big love was skydiving which he taught in the Canadian Armed Forces during WWII. As well as boxing where he covered fights with Rocky Graziano, Jersey Joe Walcott and Floyd Paterson.

I remember when the Royal Bank downtown used to be the tallest
building. Watched them build the 'Husky Tower' and now even that looks
small compared to the new taller buildings nearby. I remember the zoo
when all the animals were in those tiny barred cages. The old airport
used to be so big.....until they built our present airport.... :)
I'm not sure when all of this happened. I'm not sure I remember a lot
of the late 70's or early 80's either.... ;)

Huh, I may know you from before F.A.,
I recall the 'Slummit' used to be the tallest building downtown in the late 60's, not counting the Robin Hood towers, and I remember when the Husky Tower was built (I still call it that). CKXL was my radio station in the early 70's (I loved the twisted 'Story-Lady' in the mornings). The new international airport built in the 80's was a major improvement, and at that time the newly-installed Deerfoot Trail N was a big new highway with not much traffic. What a change 40 years makes.

As a car person from Stoon, recently arrived in Calgary in 1972 with my 250 yamaha enduro stuck half way out the trunk of my 67 parisien , yeah I remember it. Remember walkinging into the highlander and being awestruck at the sheer size of the bar, the sound, the smell ,the chaos, the live bands, the bouncers, the girls, all at 25cents a draft. It was intoxicating, it was madness, man alive was it fun. I remeber the carriage house would start playing extremely loud violin off key music at closing time. The Tradewinds the westgate the crossroads and of course the Town and Country and Bowness if one was really brave were all huge and on a weekend night wetre packed and rocking full tilt to a live band. I remember sliding sideways down suicide hill in a 70 datsun(200 block 2nd av Ne I think it was )and a year later actually living there and watching a steam roller go flying out of control down the hiill and crash into a tree at the corner. and so many good bar bands that cant count them. Did I say the girls. It was quite a change for this flatlander, looking back to me, I can say it was almost exotic.
