sin is disobedience to what deity says.

my deity exists, and not doing what he says is what they means.

That would be the supposed deity for which you have no evidence.

Bruno seems to think that if we don't believe in sin then we have no concept of right and wrong.

So we should believe in sin so we could be nice and moral like he is.

...apparently what Mad Arty is implying is that if he didn't have his
imaginary god he'd be a danger to society. I find that rather
disturbing.

You got that exactly backwards. We don't steal and kill because we know the difference between right and wrong. Theists don't steal and kill because of fictional threats from a fiction god.

But, as always, I say that if fear of your imaginary god is the only reason you don't go on a killing spree, feel free to keep on believing.

Sin and crime seem to be two quite separate concepts.

I take the "seven deadly sins" as my guide to the concept of sin. When you consider these, none of them are actions. They are states of mind characterised by a tendency to obsession.

And they are self-destructive in excess. Personally I think religion and work should be 8 and 9.

A sin (say Lust) might lead someone to crime (like rape), but Lust and Rape are completely separate concepts.

Having been rejected by that Wholly Other, we have the ability to
ignore what it's devotees call 'sin'. That way we get to pretend like
it's not a part of our reality. Although from time to time, it raises
it's head, reminding us that we're only fooling ourselves, and we have
to keep repeating over and over, mantra-like, these little sayings,
like I'm doing now, until we have stifled those voices in our head.
That's just the beginning of torments you will suffer and endure.
Only, when this life is over you won't be able to squelch the voices
like you can do now. They will keep getting louder, and more personal
until eventually they will be so loud they will drown out your mantras.
The demons know you better than you know yourself, and they know
just what to say to make you want to hide from them. But you will
never be able to hide from the demons inside your head.

It's not called Hell for nothing.

Yes, but they have not necessarily been continuous. Some died out without
transforming into other civilisations. Their knowledge has been mostly
lost.

Having been rejected by that Wholly Other, we have the
ability to ignore what it's devotees call 'sin'. That way
we get to pretend like it's not a part of our reality.
Although from time to time, it raises it's head, reminding
us that we're only fooling ourselves, and we have to keep
repeating over and over,
mantra-like, these little sayings, like I'm doing now,
until we have stifled those voices in our head.
That's just the beginning of torments you will suffer and
endure. Only, when this life is over you won't be able to
squelch the voices
When I'm dead I can't hear any voices because I'm dead and no
longer exist. Just as I heard no voices before I was even
conceived. Exactly the same.
That's just a blind belief. There is no evidence of that.
Just like your "earth is only 5000 years old" claim.
I never claimed that.
"This human world is only five thousand years old."

The human world is the human civilization we are living in. It's
about five thousand years old.
Prove it.
I don't have to. You can always find out how long our civilization
has been all by yourself. I'm sure Google is your friend.
And what we will find is that human civilization is far older than 5000 years old.
I disagree. Civilization needs to be continuous.
Why?
Because civilization is based on human knowledge.
Human knowledge comes and goes. Do you know how to carve stone using
primitive pre-bronze age tools?
Human knowledge comes and goes because knowledge is spiritual that can
only come from God. When humans learn and understand the knowledge from
God, civilization will rise. When humans forget the knowledge,
civilization will fall.

Not all archeological findings belong to our civilization.
But they were civilisations, none the less.
If they have a very different knowledge, they belong to a different
civilization.
Yes, but they have not necessarily been continuous. Some died out without
transforming into other civilisations. Their knowledge has been mostly
lost.
Yes. That's why every civilization is a different world.

Perhaps I have not made myself clear. The ancient Chinese civilization
is not the ancient Chinese teaching more than 2000 years old. It's what
the ancient Chinese teachings were talking about in their past. It's
something even older than them. The ancient Chinese teachings talked
about an utopian kingdom that they themselves didn't know much about.

...acutely, there's only "sin" in the tormented, delusional mind
of the theist.
If a deity told you to do something, and you didnt do it, that is hardly a delusion.

For example if my deity commanded you to stop doing what you are doing to me, and you refused, that is disobedience to his commands, what you wanted to do be damned.

Cant you take a god damn hint?

No wonder you got divorced ...

Atheism is not a "sect." Judaism, on the other hand . . .

"The real world" includes Jesus for me, too. I think he was just another bloke, just like you.

What difference does it make how many atheists there are? That has nothing to do with the truth of what you believe.

Things either exist or not.
If they exist it is in the real world and they adhere to reality.

Your God is so screamingly crazy that anybody who believes in it has to have some mental disorder. Not enough to keep them from living a normal life but enough to cause problems with the ability to reason.

Once you allow that the unevidenced and unproven as fact You are saying reality has no meaning. That's why there are morons who reject evolution and insist that there was a world wide flood that we know did not happen.

At one time everyone believed the earth was flat like it says in the bible.
How much more might have been discovered if that belief had not been in place.

I don't think the Vikings shared that nonsense belief or they never would have found Iceland.

The bottom line is that truth does not have anything to do with faith and only truth will keep us alive and thriving.
The Dark Ages are testimony to that.
