Premium bitter (which is just about all I drink in a pub apart from wine
if I'm having a meal) is anywhere from £3.20 to £4.50 - average about
£4.00 - down here in the south/southeast.

It's a bit cheaper 'oop north' from my experience.

Lidl usually has a beer or two at £1 per bottle. Often Shepherd Neame
slightly out-of-date (but not past its best-before) special editions -
Masterbrew under a different label for tennis, rugby tournaments etc -
which I'm always pleased to see (and buy).

I rarely go to pubs these days and my brother paid when we were in one last
week but guess it is £3 something hereabouts.

But, I'm sure Joe didn't really think that a pint of beer cost close to
a pound. This was just part of Joe's lovable rogue nature, trying to get
something for nothing, or something more than the other person had
bargained for, anyway.
