Albert Fung is turning in his grave. But I don't think Cantonese will die out. Cantonese speakers number more than 60 million, equivalent to the size of mid-sized countries, such as Britain.

Recently, I met a family from Fujian province. They spoke to me in Mandarin, but they used the Fujian dialect among themselves. This is almost 70 years after the founding of the People's Republic of China.

The younger and middle age generations all speak Mandarin.
Only the old people can't speak Mandarin.
I think within the next few generations, Cantonese will be completely disappeared.

But I gotta admit, they all can speak Cantonese(Taishanese).

Cantonese sounds totally different from Malay. It sounds more like the Fujian dialect (spoken also by Taiwanese). The Cantonese-speaking people are not Yue people, but are the same as the other Chinese people. But because they are in the south, northerners conveniently assume they are Yue.
