Discussion:
Can you force banks to keep branches open?

How would it work?

Is it another example of don't do as I do, do as I say?

Labour's own bank - the Coop Bank, closed its branch near me around ten years ago. Customers instead had to queue up for ages in one of the few PO's Labour left open and have PO staff bumble their transactions or take spend over an hour on the bus to visit one of the handful of branches still operating in the north of England.

Last year I need to pay in a cheque to a Coop bank customer in Stockport, so I visited one of their very few branches in their main office there at the "Pyramid". When I arrived the security guard would not let me in - "Coop employees only" he advised (at least now this 'branch' no longer appears on their web site).

It won't. There will be a flurry of closures just before the Act becomes
law.

I find doing stuff online is so much more convenient.

All banks will accept cheques by post. Why travel to a bank?

You get a receipt, and you're not risking the cheques being lost in the
post.

JOOI, if you do post them, where do you address them to?

Then get proof of posting.

Ask the bank yourself.

How would it work?
By raising charges to customers to make it pay. Or getting the government
to increase taxes to subsidise branches that are loss making.

Of course, the former will not be welcome by the customers, and the
latter will lead to banks suddenly discovering that *all* their branches
are loss making.

It's a transient problem anyway, I suspect. Although given that I have
had dealings with people half my age who haven't a clue about online
banking (despite having had their smartphone surgically attached to their
hand) it may just be another fault line in society.

Generally though, I'm happy to be subsidised by the wilfully stupid.
