Our Terry Austin appears, briefly, in Ryk Spoor's new Arenaverse
novel, "Challenges of the Deep". He taunts a crowd of aliens,
including the phrase "I know you are, but what am I?", and a
lynch mob eventually throws him off the edge of Skydock, to his
presumed death. He is searched for, but all that is found is a
group of predators, presumed to have eaten him.

That was part of my reward for backing Ryk's Polychrome Kickstarter
to a high level. Best money I ever spent on entertainment.

Ryk: I finished the chapter on the race last night. It was very
thoroughly telegraphed, predictable and formulaic (that chapter, not
the book overall), but so well executed it was still the most
exciting part of the book (so far). That takes some real skill.

Thanks. To me, that's an important feature; it means that the writing
works even if you already know it, meaning that the book should be
RE-readable.

There aren't many books I reread, and I have doubts about this one
unless the series goes on a long time, but I always admire that
level of craft, as much as any degree of art.

Well, it's the topc if an entire chapter, which is eight pages.
Which does not appear (so far, at least) to have any bearing on the
actual plot of the book.

I believe the metaphor is that the predators who eat me are the
denizens of rec.arts.sf.written. If not, it should be.

Not the ENTIRE character. No stomach, nor testicle, nor intestine
existed to be eaten and the hair, the teeth, the nails, the gristle, the
bones and the umbrella were sold to an undisclosed buyer for conversion
to ..... chicken nuggets.

Heh. A lot. My day job's in the range of 75k, and of course going solo
I'd have to be paying some of the stuff my employer does, so probably
something over 8k/month. I don't know if ANYONE gets that much on
Patreon, let alone a not-terribly-well-known author like me.

Obviously, if I got into four figures at all it would start making a
significant difference, but to be able to just quit my job goes into the
ridiculous territory. A nice dream, like winning the lottery, but that's
all it is.

"PA books"?

The problem is writing TIME. I have on average 4 hours a week to write
in. I still have two more books to write for Baen, which will take up
most of that for the next year or so. Self-publishing is a tremendously
time and money-intensive thing, as I found when making _Polychrome_.

The high expectations of a Bob Eggleton cover were, in fact, the
reasons this thread exists. (Which is to say, that was my motivation
for backing it to the level I did. It was worth it for that. The red

Our Terry Austin appears, briefly, in Ryk Spoor's new
Arenaverse novel, "Challenges of the Deep". He taunts a
crowd of aliens, including the phrase "I know you are, but
what am I?", and a lynch mob eventually throws him off the
edge of Skydock, to his presumed death. He is searched
for, but all that is found is a group of predators,
presumed to have eaten him.
Such cruelty to animals! How could you, Ryk?..

I wouldn't say THAT (also, it was three years ago). I did a
Kickstarter, made my first Stretch Goal, successfully met all my
promised rewards (well, my newsletter's erratic, but I suspect that was
the least-interesting of the rewards), and it still gives me small
checks now and then. And _Polychrome_ was a niche book in a niche field.

If I wanted to write a Postapocalyptica book (I don't really, though I
do have an idea for a classic "Disaster Novel"), it'd be a MAGICAL
postapocalyptic book.

Sounds like fun. Since there are as many premises out there as there are
waves on the shore, I'll throw one out:

Miners delving too deep dig up a ancient vault, releasing a virus. It spreads
world-wide, and its effect is to waken latent 'magic' talents in humans.
Weak telekinesis, clairvoyance, and telepathy.

However, it also makes contacts with iron and iron alloys extremely toxic, and
electrical potentials nearby painful.

Play with that, guys.

Well, Chuck Wendig's first commercial fiction project was _Double Dead_
(http://www.isfdb.org/cgi-bin/title.cgi?1327695), a post-apocalyptic
vampire zombie novel, and look where his career is now!

Yeah, I was going to say something, but I don't have any sales figures
or anything. If you want to see an example of "it didn't go well," I
could point you at some failed kickstarters, or self-published books
with Amazon ranks in eight digits.

(One Kickstarter I backed only got $271 pledged of a $3,000 goal.
Funny thing is, the guy published anyway, and book's Amazon rank is
now pretty respectable. Not great, but respectable.)

When I was putting together my own Kickstarters, I stumbled across one
poor schmuck who had NO pledges whatsoever -- not even his best
friends backed him. (I can't find it now to prove it, alas!) THAT
didn't go well.

(When I went looking for it just now I did find one that somehow met
its $9,000 goal with just 23 backers; pretty sure someone cheated on
that, and got a friend or relative to kick in most of it. The
description is ghastly. And there are lots with pitifully few
backers.)

I think Jeph Jacques might; he's definitely well over $4,000 a month.

His page used to give a dollar total; it doesn't anymore. He has
4,711 patrons, though, with a $1 minimum and a $5 bonus level. Also a
$10 level and a $100 level, but I'm not sure he has anyone at those.

Probably. Though depending on the character, that contribution might

But that's okay, he has TONS of backstory available for flashback stories.

Probably. Though depending on the character, that contribution might
have to be very large. For instance, once I kill Virigar I have no
intention of bringing that bastard back.
But that's okay, he has TONS of backstory available for flashback stories.
and there's always timetravel...

Our Terry Austin appears, briefly, in Ryk Spoor's new Arenaverse
novel, "Challenges of the Deep". He taunts a crowd of aliens,
including the phrase "I know you are, but what am I?",
Simon's thought: "How is that even being TRANSLATED???"
Hey, some concepts, particularly low-level ones, are universal! This one
effectively just inverts the mirror neurons unexpectdly, right?

That's true, but unless it's VERY far backstory (as in, effectively
separate from any of the future stories) I'm not much inclined to write
them; prequels rarely prosper.

Everyone but me seems to have liked A Deepnes in the Sky as much as A
Fire Upon the Deep.

The book version of Patriot Games was released after Hunt for Red
October but is set earlier. I suspect that it was written but didn't
sell. But it prospered. (The movie is a sequel.)

The thread for "Young [charactername]" is over there. I don't really
know the prosperity level of these tales.

I'm sure that there are backstory prequel novels out there that nobody
realizes are derivative and earlier than something else.

I guess I have to concede "Enterprise" to you. I liked it better than
DS9 or Voyager, but that wasn't the general opinion.

I'm not willing to re-watch it to tell.

didn't get to watch 3.8 yet.

There have been suggestions that the producers of the current movies

that couldn't possibly keep them safe from the pitchforks and

Not me. Deepness had a lot of good individual bits in it, but its plot
structure was far too similar to its precursor, to the point that it
became annoying on the first reading.

more accurately I should say that prequels usually just suck.

That and several of the "young" attempts are ones that come to mind as

I actually preferred "Deepness". The main reason being that I, in opposition to most here, don't like the Tines. That was reinforced when I started the third book and (rarely for me) gave up partway through.

I liked the general background with the Zones, the alien species, even the slightly silly Galactic Usenet. I wish Vinge would have explored that a lot more.

You are certainly not alone, or even in a small minority. A friend gave up on the book shortly after the Tines were introduced. I paused for about a month somewhere in Woodcarver's military campaign. Quite a few people seem to have found that section uninteresting or worse.

But on a second read I actually liked the sections with the Tines, and, against expectations, really liked "Children of the Sky". I have no explanation for this.

I agree with your post below. I want more of the Beyond and its peoples. I assume some are left.

That's the opposite of my experience. I enjoyed the whole book on the
first read, but the tines world stuff dragged on the re-read. It's
not like I found something that kicked me out of belief - those
segments just no longer interested me, while the high-tech stuff did.

been stuck in chapter 10 for years). I haven't seen a bigger bunch of

Probably. Though depending on the character, that
contribution might
have to be very large. For instance, once I kill Virigar I
have no intention of bringing that bastard back.
But that's okay, he has TONS of backstory available for
flashback stories.

Prequels rarely fail to suck. This is, in part, inherent, in that
you _know_ how they end (at least, in general), and you can't
violate that canon and still pretend it's a prequel. But mostly,
it's because prequels are not written because there's a story to
tell, they're written because somebody offered the author enough
money to sell their creative soul.

Our Terry Austin appears, briefly, in Ryk Spoor's new
Arenaverse
novel, "Challenges of the Deep". He taunts a crowd of
aliens, including the phrase "I know you are, but what am
I?",
Simon's thought: "How is that even being TRANSLATED???"
Hey, some concepts, particularly low-level ones, are universal!
This one effectively just inverts the mirror neurons
unexpectdly, right?
Post by Sea Wasp (Ryk E. Spoor)
Probably. Though depending on the character, that
contribution might
have to be very large. For instance, once I kill Virigar I
have no intention of bringing that bastard back.
But that's okay, he has TONS of backstory available for
flashback stories.
That's true, but unless it's VERY far backstory (as in,
effectively
separate from any of the future stories) I'm not much inclined
to write them; prequels rarely prosper.
Prequels rarely fail to suck. This is, in part, inherent, in that
you _know_ how they end (at least, in general), and you can't
violate that canon and still pretend it's a prequel.
Dave Duncan's Kings Blades series is kind of a counter example
Post by Gutless Umbrella Carrying Sissy
But mostly,
it's because prequels are not written because there's a story to
tell, they're written because somebody offered the author enough
money to sell their creative soul.
The Craft Sequence
The earlier Pern stories strike me as counter examples

That sounds like something I wouldn't have been interested in
anyway, but since I've never heard of it, it's hard to say.

If you say so. Pern is one of the most overwritten series I've ever
seen (excpet, perhapd, Honor Harrington). I gave up when it became
clear it had truned into a "how many times can I get paid to write
the same story, without even changing the names?" experiment.

Since he is presumed dead, rather than his body being found, there
is always the possibility that he could turn up again in a later

That thought had occured to me, too, but I didn't back the

Well, it's not the funding level, it's what kind of a character I make
of someone, which is partly due to what they request. You requested,
specifically, a death, so that pretty much ruled out "recurring" unless
you were a Timelord or something.

Other people described their character in terms that ended up becoming
more permanent.

I have a vague recollection that the level I went to was "a guest
appearance," and the one higher level was "recurring character."

It's anime, which isn't far from actual comic books. And in comic
books, if a character is dead, they're still alive, and if you have
a body, that *proves* they're still alive.

You're entirely skilled enough to pull it off, if you decide it
serves the needs to the story.

I have no regrets. I mean, think about it: My name is in the
subject to an *on* *topic* thread! That's about as many levels of
win as any troll could ever hope for.

Perhaps instead of being eaten, he has been captured, restrained with
all senses blocked except his ears with *lan B*ker's posts being read
into one and *om *ra*man's the other with a half hour break every half
hour. During the break *u*d*bloc's would replace A*'s and *t*rmak*r's

perhaps he could escape, perhaps to be eaten by predators?

lynch mob eventually throws him off the edge of Skydock, to his
presumed death. He is searched for, but all that is found is a
group of predators, presumed to have eaten him.
It was his personal request. Paid for, in fact. :)
Since he is presumed dead, rather than his body being found, there
is always the possibility that he could turn up again in a later
book.
A suspiciously similar character named "Throbbing Sausage" could put
in an appearance (I can't remember the other TerrryNyms at the
moment).
Or I could have someone called a gutless umbrella-carrying sissy.
There are many ways to do it -- see George O. Smith's "Doctor Lyon
Sprague decamped with alacrity."

Arenaverse
novel, "Challenges of the Deep". He taunts a crowd of
aliens, including the phrase "I know you are, but what am
I?",
Simon's thought: "How is that even being TRANSLATED???"

By someone who acknowledges they don't have the sense to come in
out of the rain? Yeah, I'd pay again for that.

What's usually called "space opera", which means not so much attention
to doing detailed scientific stuff (like in "hard-SF") and a lot more to
grand-scale adventures; the Arenaverse is a salute to the so-called
"Golden Age" authors, especially Doc Smith.

_Challenges of the Deeps_ is the third book in the series, so if you're
actually interested at all, you should start with _Grand Central Arena_.
Yes, there's a summary of What Went Before at the beginning of the book,
but that's not really the same as actually reading the books.
