Hello listserv users,

I'm having a bit of problem using
listserv with my mail client(thunderbird)

I've registerd to the listserv server using mail confirmation,
and subscribed to IBM-MAIN group, through the browser,
and made a password.

when I connect to the listserv server through the broswer
using ID and PW it connect's ok,

but when I'm using thunderbird,
I can't access the "listserv.ua.edu" server.
when I try to connect it writes "connection timed out".

I've serched in google for the answer,
but havn't found any realtive post.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thank's,
Yaniv R.

TB is an e-mail client. Configure it to use your provider's IMAP4 server. For web access, use FireFox.

Thank's for the reply Seymour,

I don't quite understand what You meen in IMAP4 server.
but I have other newsgroup that are free, listed in TB
and they all work except the "listserv.ua.edu" newsgroup
also I've registered my google account in TB and it also works
the only problem is with this "listserv.ua.edu" newsgroup account!

maybe it's a problem with the configuration,
like port's, and security settings.

Yaniv,
You're mixing up listerv and newsgroup. Different animals. If you want to
read ibm-main as email, then you would register an email address and all
the posts to the listserv will be forwarded to your private email account.
You wouldn't configure Thunderbird to use listserv.ua.edu at all, you'd
just use your personal email account.
If you want to read the posts using Thunderbird as a news reader, then
you also won't use listserv.ua.edu, but instead setup a news server account
(your ISP either provides one, or you can use one of the for-fee servers
or I think there still might be some free ones around) and then subscribe
to the bit.listserv.ibm-main newsgroup.

You can access IBM-MAIN three ways

1. Via the web interface

2. To your e-mail account

3. Via the news group that it is gated to. If you use a news
client to post to that group, subscribers to IBM-MAIN will
not see your post. Also, "listserv.ua.edu" is not a news
server; use the server provided by your ISP, if any, or sign
up with an outside news server. But I advise against this
route for IBM-MAIN.

So if you're set to NOMAIL, I recommend that you either change that or use the listserv web interface.

While not as easy as using a news group, you can certainly use any web site that maintains a news archive and allows posting. You still have the issue that your posts will not be visible of the listserv, unless they've reconfigured.

A search for "open news servers" should get you a list of news servers that you can use for free from TB. Remember that your posts will only show up on the news group, not on the listserv.

A search for "IBM mainframe blog" should give you some sites of possible interest.

If you do sign up with a news server, check the bit.* groups. There might be comp.* groups of interest, but I don't know of any specific to IBM.

Thank's all,

I will check the "news.eternal-september.org"

I hope it will work.

Thank's,

A search for "open news servers" should get you a list of news servers that you can use for free from TB. Remember that your posts will only show up on the news group, not on the listserv.
A search for "IBM mainframe blog" should give you some sites of possible interest.
If you do sign up with a news server, check the bit.* groups. There might be comp.* groups of interest, but I don't know of any specific to IBM.

Thank's Seymour,
I don't think I have a newsgroup from my ISP
but I have some free newsgroups I'm using
and most of them work well,
if you know of any free IBM related newsgroup's
I will happy to know about.
Thank's,

You can access IBM-MAIN three ways
1. Via the web interface
2. To your e-mail account
3. Via the news group that it is gated to. If you use a news
client to post to that group, subscribers to IBM-MAIN will
not see your post. Also, "listserv.ua.edu" is not a news
server; use the server provided by your ISP, if any, or sign
up with an outside news server. But I advise against this
route for IBM-MAIN.
So if you're set to NOMAIL, I recommend that you either change that or use the listserv web interface.

TB is an e-mail client. Configure it to use your provider's IMAP4 server. For web access, use FireFox.

Subject: Having problem using LISTSERV.UA.EDU with thunderbird
Hello listserv users,
I'm having a bit of problem using
listserv with my mail client(thunderbird)
I've registerd to the listserv server using mail confirmation,
and subscribed to IBM-MAIN group, through the browser,
and made a password.
when I connect to the listserv server through the broswer
using ID and PW it connect's ok,
but when I'm using thunderbird,
I can't access the "listserv.ua.edu" server.
when I try to connect it writes "connection timed out".
I've serched in google for the answer,
but havn't found any realtive post.
Any help would be appreciated,
Thank's,
Yaniv R.

FSVO "best." Different people have different preferences. Some people
use NNTP and newsreaders to keep their places and keep their inboxes
under control. Some simply subscribe and deal with the volume of
IBM-MAIN e-mail. Some use the Digest version. Some follow on Google.
And so on.
