Discussion:
Why the world needs the French

More than 100 women signed an open letter Tuesday arguing against the #MeToo movement.
The letter, signed by renowned French actress Catherine Deneuve as well as writers, historians, journalists and entertainers, was published in Le Monde to “we defend freedom to importune, indispensable to sexual freedom.”
“Rape is a crime, but trying to seduce someone, even persistently or back-handedly, is not — nor is men being gentlemanly a macho attack,” the letter said.
“Men have been punished summarily, forced out of their jobs when all they did was touch someone’s knee or try to steal a kiss.”
James Franco accused of inappropriate sexual behavior

French actress Catherine Deneuve and 100 other women decried the #MeToo movement.
The #MeToo was relaunched in the midst of a slew of sexual harassment and assault allegations that overtook Hollywood and took down legends including Harvey Weinstein and Kevin Spacey.
More than 300 actresses subsequently launched Time’s Up, a new initiative aiming to fight sexual harassment and assault in the workplace.
But the open letter argues that the campaigns have led to “denunciations and public accusations of people who, without giving them the possibility of responding or defending themselves, have been placed on exactly the same level as sex offenders.”

An instinctive knee-jerk reaction against a popular movement lacks thought.

Catherine Deneuve and her crew have publicly declared that they do not object to being groped.

I can only wish them safe, but their future looks pretty awful from now on.

Idiot. Would you like to see Oprah for president? She is ideal as the braindead lefties' answer to Trump.

Here's Melanie Mcdonagh. I am getting to like her much more than I used to.

https://www.standard.co.uk/comment/comment/a-french-counterblast-to-the-metoo-protest-culture-a3736526.html

Thank God for the French. The open letter to Le Monde by Catherine Deneuve and 99 other prominent Frenchwomen on the subject of sex, sexual harassment and feminism was not just a rebuke by women getting on a bit to the hashtag generation; it was a counterblast to the Americanisation of the culture of protest.

The Harvey Weinstein phenomenon was American, and so too was the backlash, the MeToo culture of victimhood and the hashtag activism. The French women are, of course, dealing with their own version of that post Weinstein protest movement also – it’s billed as #Balancetonporc, which is even ruder. But the new backlash, which we saw most recently this week at the Golden Globes awards — over to you, Oprah — is essentially American. And in this particular culture war, you can sign me up with the French.

It would be easy to dismiss Catherine D — the original Belle de Jour — and the cohort as women with a generational problem with contemporary feminism, so embedded in a sexist culture they’re reliant on it for their self-worth. Or as Asia Argento, who accused Harvey Weinstein of harassment, observed: “Catherine Deneuve and other French women tell the world how their interiorised misogyny has lobotomised them to the point of no return.” Lovely. Actually, it’s telling that the response to the Le Monde letter has mostly been Twitter length; the original is an actual argument.

You can see how this debate is going: old against young, millennial feminists versus first wave ones. Yet the letter raises obvious issues.

One is that there is a distinction between a clumsy pass, a brushed knee, say, and an actual physical assault: “Insistent or clumsy pick up attempts are not a crime “ni la galanterie une aggression machiste”.

In a sane world, that wouldn’t need saying. The other is the unsayable reality that the physical nature of sexuality is in some sense aggressive. They also point out that the logical conclusion of the new sexual culture is that couples will have to sign up for consent to sex by app or in writing; a bill being considered in Sweden suggests it’s not hyperbole.

Mind you, though the women are right to think it wrong that a man’s career should be ruined by “touching a knee, trying to steal a kiss” context is all: if the man in question is someone who has the power to advance your career or sack you, then the stolen kiss really is a matter of power as much as desire.

No matter. On the real issue, Deneuve et al are right. The backlash against any manifestation of male interest in women, or male desire, seems to make victims out of grown women and it threatens to make life less joyous, or at any rate, less interesting. Je Suis Catherine …if only.

The C of E is just a small rump of grey haired robots that are trained to

In some areas, they are still dead against women vicars, even though 75% of

I don’t know either, but there is at least one lesbian imam - Seyran

Needless to say, she has received a multitude of death threats from around

Aye, they must be enraged. Or outraged. I'm not sure if there's a

What is this 'kickball' of which you speak?
i just know arsenal and england regard it as valued exercise
to be watched by billions from their chip fuelled sofas
Ah, what the chaps on the shop floor call 'footy'? I don't know - has
saracene ever expressed the slightest interest in it?
when he does, you will find his views are 'unbalanced' as usual
Now you're just being mean. For shame!
me? i'm just practical

My god, you mean the Church of England is no longer Tory?
The C of E is just a small rump of grey haired robots that are trained to
respond with the same utterances whenever their senior people speak.
In some areas, they are still dead against women vicars, even though 75% of
their congregation are women.
Are there more women imams than women vicars? :-) I really don't know,
but it seems unlikely.
in the c of e?
I don't believe there are any imams, never mind women ones, in the CoE.
but can you be sure?
No, but it seems improbable.
so do women vicars, jonathon welby and women footballers
surely the c of e should be practicing diversity....

I was on a tour of some churches in the USA when the guide invited us to say what denomination we belonged to.
Of several ex-Brits in the group, one said "I have no religion; I'm C-of-E".

More than 100 women signed an open letter Tuesday arguing against the #MeToo movement.
An instinctive knee-jerk reaction against a popular movement lacks thought.
Catherine Deneuve and her crew have publicly declared that they do
not object to being groped.
I can only wish them safe, but their future looks pretty awful from now on.

Don't think so. Freddy's defining characteristic was an utter refusal
to do even the most basic research, hence having his bum bitten by
Venezuela. He held it up to us as a shining example of living standards
being improved by socialism. OK, it was nowhere near as bad then as it
is today, but it was clearly on the slide and he hadn't bothered
getting up to date.

Yes, White Spirit is correct.

I change my nym depending on what insults folk throw at me.

Someone once said I was the exact opposite of witty so I changed to yttiw
which is witty backwards.

Others told me categorically that I lived in Bungay, or was born there, or
something similar - and despite my insistence that I had never been near the
place in my life (and had no idea where it was, initially) they insisted.
Hence the @bungay.com in my non-existent email.

Another poster called me a sorry sack of shit, which led to the
***@bungay.com business.

I don’t remember anorak, but maybe someone called me that as well in the
dim and distant past - but unlike some, I don’t keep a database of all
this, and I certainly don’t start websites dedicated to uk.p.m. liars.

As for ill-tempered, well yes I can be on occasion; usually when I'm
subjected to regular internet abuse. If people give me both barrels, I tend
to do the same to them. If people treat me as a normal human then I am calm
and temperate.

As for Mimo, well that came about because I use a MacBook, and didn’t
really want to pay for a newsreader. However, the free ones are pretty crap
(or at least the ones I tried were) and I was always getting abused for not
having the correct pagination, or text justification, or posts that inserted
an extra line between each line of quoted text. The list went on, and on.

In the end I decided there was no alternative but to pay a monthly
subscription. Someone recommended Mimo because it was cheap and did most of
the simple tasks. So I took the plunge.

However, mimo was forever crashing; half of my posts seemed to get lost in
the ether or took about 6 hours to appear on the newsgroups. I became so sick
of it that I kept changing my name to reflect the current state of my mimo
software. In the end it shut me out altogether and I couldn’t log in using
the details stored on the laptop, so I cancelled my payments and uninstalled
it.

I now have subscribed to something called Hogwasher. It seems quite stable
and does what it says on the tin.

I just get a bit hyper-sensitive. I brew my own beer, and the results can be
somewhat erratic at times. I bottle condition the brew, so that although I
can calculate a general alcohol level from hygrometer measurements, if the
beer has fermented well in the bottles it can be a bit lively; but also
stronger than I anticipated.

A couple of pints of maybe 8-9% and I turn into angry old git on a mission.

Why pay pub prices, when I can make my own for about 60p a pint?

I have never used sodium metabisulphite with beer. I used it in the past with
wine, but as you say the chemical is pretty dodgy stuff and I would try and
not breath in when I opened the bottle of steriliser. I don’t do wine these
days, as it was never a great success when I tried.

If you haven’t brewed beer for a long time, you would be amazed at the
advances which have been made since the days of cheap beer kits from
Boots. There are micro-brewers producing kits which are basically to similar
recipes they use commercially. All manner of varieties are available, and
even a gluten free one, if you feel brave.

These days the sterilisation is done with sodium percarbonate, which has
little odour at all and is much less of a problem.

I have never stopped beer fermentation, as the more fully it ferments the
better the brew should be.These new kits tend to clear on their own given
time and cold temperatures, so my bottles go in the garage after a week or
two.

spend less money...

It's funny, but once something has been free for so long, I find I can
never bring myself to pay for it. I'm persevering with
eternal-september, even though it's been playing up a bit in recent
times. I'm just mean, and that's that.

It's funny, but once something has been free for so long, I find I can
never bring myself to pay for it. I'm persevering with
eternal-september, even though it's been playing up a bit in recent
times. I'm just mean, and that's that.

However, mimo was forever crashing; half of my posts seemed to get lost in
the ether or took about 6 hours to appear on the newsgroups. I became so sick
of it that I kept changing my name to reflect the current state of my mimo

this, and I certainly don’t start websites dedicated to uk.p.m. liars.
As for ill-tempered, well yes I can be on occasion; usually when I'm
subjected to regular internet abuse. If people give me both barrels,
I
tend
to do the same to them. If people treat me as a normal human then I
am
calm
and temperate.
If I get angry (which is actually quite rare), I just stay away. I
don't like people seeing me like that, which is a bit of an oddness on
my part.

As for Mimo, well that came about because I use a MacBook, and didn’t
really want to pay for a newsreader. However, the free ones are
pretty
crap
(or at least the ones I tried were) and I was always getting abused for not
having the correct pagination, or text justification, or posts that inserted
an extra line between each line of quoted text. The list went on, and on.
In the end I decided there was no alternative but to pay a monthly
subscription. Someone recommended Mimo because it was cheap and did most of
the simple tasks. So I took the plunge.

I became
so sick
of it that I kept changing my name to reflect the current state
of my
mimo
software. In the end it shut me out altogether and I couldn’t log in using
the details stored on the laptop, so I cancelled my payments and uninstalled
it.
I now have subscribed to something called Hogwasher. It seems quite stable
and does what it says on the tin.

Somebody washes your hog??
Johnny's hog, not mine. Mine is filthy.
Sorry. You have lost me already.
Do I have a hog?
Presumably this is some kind of euphemism?
You said you used something called Hogwasher, but (AFAICT), Ophelia
thought it was me. Unless my newsreader is messing up the threads?
Yes, that is what the newsreader is called.
http://www.asar.com/hogwasher.html
I understood that bit, no problem. But then Ophelia replied to me,
asking if somebody washes my hog (presumably thinking that /I/ had made
the reference to Hogwasher). I was just pointing out that it was not me
who had their hogs washed.

LOL and you told me yours was mucky!
It all gave me a laugh anyway so wasn't wasted:)))
Yep, it all helps the day go by.

Oprah Winfrey. Golden globes 2018. Sipa. SIPA / AP22148721_000443.
Not enough ».
Comme le disait Henry Kissinger : « Nobody will ever win the battle of sexes. There’s too much fraternizing with the enemy » (« Personne ne gagnera jamais la guerre des sexes.
« (…) Et d’abord, le regard
Tout le temps du prélude
Ne doit être ni rude, ni hagard
Dévorez-moi des yeux
Mais avec retenue
Avec délicatesse
En souplesse
Et doigté »
Et terminons par un ordre féminin souverain :
« Et vous…
Déshabillez-vous »…
