Then where can you KF....

Very excited that tomorrow I am to be presented to HRH the Princess Royal.
Tried to be casual and cool but find I am not. So busy with the event, I
don't think I have time to do my hair. I have a hat but as I will be
wearing a T Shirt & trousers feel I might look comical.

You are about to kill-file a member of the Royal Family?

Isn't that virtual-treason?

Coo! I'm impressed, Bottoms.

I don't know whether this is of any help, but twenty-<mumble> years ago
she presented a student of mine with an award. I was there in the small
group at The Royal Institution for the presentation. Although I didn't
meet her personally she made an intelligent and knowledgeable (and
commendably brief) speech without notes and I was close enough to see
that she treated the five recipients of the award (all just 16 or 17)
with genuine interest and respect. I was very impressed and have
thought she was a dashed good egg ever since (and I'm not a natural
royalist). I'm sure she'll be just as nice with you.

I hope it goes well and that you have a really good day.

I am South Region Treasurer for the RDA and HRH is National President. HRH
is attending a big conference which husbad and I have helped organise.
After today, this written at 5.35am, I will get my life back and probably
wonder what to do with all my new found time! Lots of world class speakers
so hopefully a good day once it kicks off.

Just about to shower then to Newbury via Tesco where I hope to find 30
Danish Pastries, freshly cooked and ready for me to take in for the crew
for breakfast. All volunteers except the AV/staging/lighting folk.

Frilly knickers all round!

Glad it went well. RDA is an excellent organisation - my mother used to
volunteer for them and, for a few years, I helped her organise a
gymkhana each summer, as part of a larger horse show, raising funds for
them.

Been there, done that .... as of course you know. I didn't have a hat then
either.

Back to normal today and ready to finalise the finances of this event. The
Chairman wanted to it to make no profit but to cover all costs. I would
have preferred a target that included a small profit to allow for slippage.
It is important to recognise those that who attend already give time and
most of us some money to the RDA one way or another. The ticket prices are
calculated to meet costs but not exceed them. The conference is
educational and to some extent social but it isn't a jolly, subsidised by
funds raised for the benefit of our riders. I think we are pretty well
spot on. This element is especially gratifying.

One mildly amusing anecdote; we were on the third floor of a grandstand.
The stairs up to it were many more than most second floor buildings.
However, if HRH used the lift like most of us, we had to pay over £600 to
have a lift mechanic on duty in case it broke down. I was told HRH would
be incensed if we did this and she leaves most folk standing when it comes
to stairs and the like. I took the stairs once; huff, puff,
sigh.........clearly not made of the same stuff.

My daughter Sarah used to volunteer with the RDA. Close to us we have the Welsh Institute of Therapeutic Horsemanship aka WITH. Sounds grand, but it's a farm. They help troubled rather than disabled folk - mostly young people. They are well regarded by our social work team (and get some financial support from Rotary). All good stuff.

Odd: I have Turnpike set to wordwrap (at least I think I do), but some
posts it doesn't. And in this case:

In David's original post as I read it, it was wrapped properly (lines
ending have, grand, mostly, and get).
In your post, _your_ text wrapped at line and sideways, but David's text
(as quoted by you) was in long lines - but not one long line; they ended
with grand and get.
In _this_ post of mine, as I see it while I'm composing this: David's
post (now double quoted) is in short lines again, but lines ending have,
Sounds, a dash, and team - and your text (quoted once) has lines ending
length and read.

Ah, the mysteries of (I think) hard and soft returns. (We do miss
Sebastian! And TNMF. Both of whom I suspect could explain the above.)

I had seen it quoted by someone else and expected David's post to have a
line length imposed upon it by my elderly Agent but it didn't happen. While
I was composing my reply I could make the quote wrap at any length I chose
by changing the width of the window but it only had a > at the beginning..

Penny and everybody - sorry about line length of my posts.
The format is fine at my end, even on gmail notifications.
Can't see any adjustments so will resume quest for a useable
News reader. I'm still using Google groups - ok for reading
But not for posting, it seems.

I use Agent and find it very useful (once I get it set up right!).
I've set it up on several machines in the last few weeks and each time
forget the odd thing here and there.

Agent doesn't seem to have an Android version and there seem to be

This is why I don't use my Android tablet for usenet. The lack of
decent options is very tedious.

don't expect this to be the case everywhere I roam.

I've set up plusnet and eternal september to work with agent. The plan
was to try and use plusnet as much as possible (rather like the
subsidised bus services hereabouts - to show that people are actively
using the service so they don't take it away) but Agent seems to be
behaving like a coalition government with both news servers fighting
against each other so, since ES will work from any computer anywhere I
often deactivate plusnet.

Ah, I didn't know you could do that. While whole-heartedly approving of
your use-it-or-lose-it reasons for using Plusnet, it saddens me they only
appear to have one support bod who has any idea what it is and, since he
only seems to work on their news groups, it is seemingly impossible to
contact him when there is actually a problem :(

I may investigate ES.

ES is the only one I can use my end. Apparently snipping does not always
work. No idea where it gets corrupted as it seems intermittent.
I say the only one, as GG is an option.

You may add as many news servers as you wish - though nowadays that
doesn't mean a lot - Tools > Servers and Accounts > News Servers where
it helpfully tells me that to add a news server I should press the
"new" button.

Don't do what I did and forget to update the news directory from the
new server before expecting to work with messages. IIRC I experienced
the double embarrassment of asking umra what was wrong with Agent and
then having to admit it was "operator error" all along.

No such menu on my elderly version of the prog but I dare say I could
create a second ini file (or whatever) in another folder on the stick and
swap them - or something. The worry then would be keeping both up-to-date
with regard to what messages I have read.

Never mind, I rarely go away (apart from to daughters) and catching up on
umra isn't the huge thing it once was. I could also reinstall Groundhog
which seemed to work OK for me.

The same seems the situation with my Newstap. I snip all the time. But
it seems not to be the form with everyone's receiving readers. Afaik

Lightbulb moment once I saw the 'orses. Riding for the disabled

My daughter Sarah used to volunteer with the RDA. Close to us we have the
Welsh Institute of Therapeutic Horsemanship aka WITH. Sounds grand, but
it's a farm. They help troubled rather than disabled folk - mostly young

Yes. The Olympic level riders are essentially limited by their physicality
but most of our riders have both physical and mental constraints.

Doh.

I don't like horses or ponies but as a teenager in Coventry we used to have
an annual gymkhana organised on our boarding school grounds. Given a chance
I would have gone out as I was allowed on Saturdays but we were expected to
be part of the event. All of us would've been eligible for the RDA had it
existed, a small sub section of our school were very much within the now
RDA criteria. I can't think of any of my friends who didn't at least enjoy
being round the horses, some love them so much they'd have been in Horse
heaven just having them in the field.

It is a really positive charity to help with imho. The practical giving nature of those involved is impressive. I feel I get more than I give. I mostly sweep floors, lift and move poles, make coffee etc. But I also believe I have a degree of ability to engage with the more mentally challenged riders. I help with severely autistic groups. But zip my lip a lot. 😍 Those who know about horses are higher on the hierarchy.

Wow! The KF has provoked so many encouraging comments starting with HRH
down to grass roots, I feel really encouraged.

HMQ has given permission for a charity ride through Windsor Gt Park in the
Autumn. HRH asked me whether I rode; not for years was the answer. Then
last night a trainer from our village (we have lots here) has offered me a
horse for the event. I am very tempted but can't think how this would
enable me to publicise the RDA and /or raise local funds. Thinking caps on
please folk. 🤓

And no - I am not doing it Lady Godiva style, before the usual suspects
suggest this.

This should provide some illumination. I am beginning to feel
enthusiastically positive with all this umra encouragement. 😜. I may just
do it. Would be fun if we could create an Archers spin off among us. We
might even managed an outside broadcast. Close your ears Sid: it would be
brilliantly post moder. 😉

Not sure if this will go direct to the right page but looks as if it
should.

And I could offer an audience with btms. 😂. All in the best possible taste
of course. Could we find some sort of Archers listener link? This idea
could have legs..... four plus two. Maybe The Archers facebook page?
Perhaps you could get Shula's close friend to come along?
That is a thought. Actors do tend to require paying at every possible
moment though? We would need a whats innit for them reward, I guess.

I've always felt that substituting "disabled" for "handicapped" is very
much PCGM.

Handicapped is an all-embracing word meaning you are at a disadvantage,
be it from a fairly minor condition (mental or physical) or very major
lack of function. Disabled, to me, means non-functioning; for example
as people were instructed to disable their cars when not in use during
the War.

Of course, if the people concerned wish to use the term disabled rather
than handicapped, then who am I to argue with them?

Damn. Was thinking I might be first. I have a delightful little number
which was a Christmas present from Fortnums. I like a hat. I wore a
particularly fetching number in Lambourn last weekend. Was helping with
RDA pony rides and advertising same with Mad Hatter style flash card
attached to a neat ladies' trilby. No idea why so many folk laughed;
thought I looked quite chic.

I hope you have a lovely time!

My dad met several of the royals over the years and was most impressed
with Anne. He said she asked the most intelligent questions and had a
sense of humour.

When he met Diana she had not long been married. He said she was very
shy but he made her smile by telling her that he was responsible for all
the unmarried mothers in Berkshire. Mum asked him afterwards what Diana
had been wearing. After some thought, he said a blue dress. Mum was not
at all satisfied with this reply and asked what the dress was made of.
More thought, then he tentatively offered: "Could it have been ...
Viyella?" Which became a family catchphrase.

When d#2 showed her round at school she was not particularly excited but
did say HRH seemed interested in things and talked to people. I doubt she
got much more than a nod from d#2 who was probably chosen because she
looked presentable and was polite but at the age of 11 was painfully shy.

I like that one. It reminds me of a family phrase of ours. My maternal
grandmother was staying with my parents and there was a decision to be
made about which jacket to wear for some occasion or other. She put on
a cream poodle-cloth jacket and Mum asked Dad what he thought about that
one. "Frankly? Grubby," he replied. The jacket was forever afterwards
known as the Frankly Grubby.

I tried on a very lovely hat in a shop recently and made the mistake of
asking Husband what he thought of it. "It looks like something the Queen
might wear", he said. Well, yes it did look much like one of Her hats
but that wasn't really relevant.
