The only real issue here, gentlemen, is that I already gots everything I
could want and/or need.

Don't bore her to tears. Be appreciative of her, for putting up with
your extreme preoccupation with yourself, and for making your life so
happy. Be appreciative too of your good financial position. Don't
thumb your nose at the less fortunate. You can't take it with you, so
use it wisely, to help those you see as needing help. My children have
all told us that they are quite well off financially, so we have no need
for a big bank account to pass on to them.
I am just as fortunate with my wife of 45 years. She chose me; that is
the norm. Dr Samuel Johnson in 19th century England wrote "Don't kid
yourself. You aren't courting her; she is courting you." In my book of
quotations (or it may have been a filler in Readers Digest,) an American
general was asked:
"What was the best advice you were ever given, General?"
"To marry the girl I did."
"And who gave you that advice?"
"She did."
When I wasn't quick enough at proposing, I had to explain that with my
depression, I was a bit of a risk.
I can quote several examples from my own circle of friends. My
depression and my inability to keep a job have not been what she
expected. What keeps us together is largely biological. In some way,
each of us is the right person for the other.
They say that being in love makes us believe in immortality, because
something so wonderful is too big for a finite life span. The disciple
John wrote that God is Love. The Greek poet Hesiod described the god of
love, Eros (Cupid in Latin) as a primal force.
I may have mentioned a couple in a nursing home described as "two
bodies, one soul." They both died at roughly the same time. Each was
determined that he/she would not be the first to die.
