Like France, Britain bans the internal combustion engine, but what does it really mean?

Motorsport and it's supporting industries will not fall away. They may not even change that much. Chassis will still be needed, carbon fibre bits will still be needed, wind tunnels, CFD, clever engineers. What will change is the power unit.

And there will be exemptions. It seems to be the goal is not to ban the ICE, but to ban passenger vehicles that use an ICE burning oil byproducts. Motorsport may well be allowed to carry on - though maybe not in series like DTM and WRC which are about something that can be likened to a production vehicle.

"Whoa! What's the rationale?"
........
"Over here, meanwhile, gasoline is still really cheap [and the president
doesn't believe in global warming and he 'cancelled' the Paris agreement].

++++++++++++++++++++++

I can imagine a world where there's so little oxygen in the atmosphere ICEs
won't run very well - so Detroit will fit oxygen tanks into the 'trunks'.

I can understand banning diesel - that is a pollution problem, but all
petroleum fuels? LPG and CNG are a lot cleaner.

Yeah but it's still just degrees of shit really. (I can't beleieve I'm
saying this, I love driving ICE vehicles...).

Electric is improving in leaps and bounds and should be adopted ASAP IMO.

Cleaner. But not clean.

Of course, it all depends on how you generate the electricity. If you do it
by burning lots of coal, it might be clean on the streets but dirty in the
atmosphere. If by 2040 most electricity generation is done through clean
means, there's no need to continue to rely on carbon fuels at all. Though
some battery techs will be damaging to the environment in different ways.

Blindly banning is never a good idea.
For many years the one and only problem according our -government- was CO2.
Diesel typically produce the lowest CO2 emissions per km!

I don't know about other European countries beside Netherlands but here our
government made insane regulations about emissions and all car companies perfectly
fulfill their requirements by changing every engine setting as soon a the test procedure
is done. Perfectly legal here, no kidding!

Now that VW is exposed in the US suddenly Europe is in shock and all Diesels
should be banned!
Diesels can be made "clean" and there even are a few models which are "clean"
as we speak, funny thing there is even a clean VW.
Banning Diesel immediately rules out other heat engines that can be made which
don't have any NOx problem.
