[Eudora 7] Does REAL alternative exist?

Hi! I've got Eudora since 1998...but now I see many bad things that make
me think about a real alternative. I've got many .mbx corrupted (i
cannot spent days to join / delete each other with Delete Duplicates..),
the UTF8 problem reading Gmail email and maybe it's time to get close to
a real alternative...considering that Eudora 7 was release in
2006...does real alternative exist?

Is anyone trying to use something to migrate into? I obviously need the
powerful X1 fast search ...and I hate outlook and MS email client...and
I think Thunderbird is a big elephant with crappy performance..
The import eudora's mbx function is also essential.

the well known alternatives like Foxmail, Dreammail, Pegasus are not
pleasent to see (i saw screenshots...)...I would like to know the
opinion by an happy user that has choosen to leave Eudora to migrare to
other solution..

Thanks a lot

After using Eudora for so many years, I ended up with EM Client (after
trying Thunderbird).
The search engine of EM Client is far less powerful and easy to use than
the one of Eudora. The only benefit of EM Client is that it supports
UTF-8 (was getting so many corrupted and hard to read messages with
Eudora). Otherwise Eudora is much better.

EM Client seems like Windows Live Mail or Outlook...it's not a good
thing for an Eudora user :\

I can't understand why no one has patched the eudora.exe file to let
Eudora support UTF-8.
For example Microsoft Photo Editor was a fantastic and extremely
functional photo editor until it has a problem : it does not support
large jpeg file (like 2..3 MB). Then a programmer was able to produce a
patch to let it work with large files...and that's all, I still use it
with that patch. Why is not possible to do something like that with
Eudora?

Here' a message posted 8 years ago

"I understand the work involved, but the request for Unicode
(international standard), has been made many years ago, not within the
past year. I know I have requested it as of v5.1. Others probably asked
for it before that as well. It didn't appear in v6 and now it hasn't
appeared in v7. So lets not make excuses for Eudora. They have had years
to implement it, but chose not to. You draw your own implications."

:(((((((

I see that maybe there's an X1 fast search addon (don't know how much
does it cost) that maybe injected into Outlook to let the search more
powerful...but I hate Outlook... :|

Because UTF-8 is a variable-length encoding for characters... It's not
just changing code to work with a larger range of X/Y values. Either Eudora
suddenly changes all internal string handling to be 4-bytes per character
(UCS-4) so that moving one character is a move of four bytes, or it becomes
much slower as any move of a cursor requires parsing characters that can be
1, 2, 3, or 4 bytes long...

Many fonts don't have glyphs for all of the Unicode range either.

PhotoEditor may only have required modifying code that originally
performed 16-bit load/store operations to using 32-bit load/store (with the
concomitant adjustment of the data addresses, but no change to the /logic/
-- loops were still the same loops just moving stuff into wider registers).

I can't understand why no one has patched the eudora.exe file to let

Because it's probably not a trivial thing, although it's been done to
great success to that other abandonned app EccoPro:

"Ecco Pro — back from the dead, again"
www.wordyard.com/2007/09/04/ecco-pro/

Alernatively, since I use the POPFile anti-SPAM application that
downloads e-mails from my ISP before handing them to Eudora, I thought
it'd be a good thing to add support for UTF-8-to-Latin1 conversion,
but the author didn't respond:

"Convert UTF8 to Latin1 on the fly?"

Here's the description

"307 KB

Patched version fixes problems handling larger image sizes, restoring

displays for pixel editing. This is the executable file from the
graphics editor package installable with MS Office 97/2000/XP.

Compatible with all Windows versions through Windows 7 64 bit. If you
already have it installed within MS Office, just replace the PHOTOED.EXE
file with the patched version. If you don't have Office 97/2000/XP
installed, use the MS Office XP CD. After installing replace the
PHOTOED.EXE file with the patched version.

If the trick does not work for Windows 7 64bit:
Sometimes the system changes the registry keys for 32bit programs,
so in that case run PHOTOED_64bit_PATCH.reg"

I've been running PC Eudora since the days of Win 3.1 and Trumpet
Winsock.. https://www.google.com/search?q=trumpet+winsock&tbm=isch

The earliest emails in my current Eudora (used daily as primary
client) database are from Oct or Nov 1995.

That being said I have Thunderbird installed but it resembles Outlook.

Only a few incoming emails out of many have come in with messed-up
characters. Eudora is going strong and can handle a HUGE email
database with 100's of Mbx's.

I've been using Eudora since about version 1.5. About two years ago
I gave up on it as my main email client at home and upgraded to
Outlook 2010 mainly because of the calendaring and the ability to
forward on an email with graphics so that the recipient would get
the real email not just links.

I still use Eudora 8 at work to pick up my home emails.. My
M-in-Law still uses Eudora as her main email client..

I have been looking at The Bat! as an alternative. It seems to import Eudora files correctly and has a decent user interface.

Does anybody know anything about it?

After maybe 25 years I would love to be able to stay with Eudora but it is getting impossible. Someone should fix it... :-)

Does the current Thunderbird import Eudora OSE data files correctly?

Since E/OSE is essentially TB + bits it should. Any reports?

There is no need to import.

Eudora OSE is a Thunderbird version, so the profiles are identical and
are already where they are required. When installing Thunderbird you
don't have to do anything.

Could you please explain that in more depth?

For years I switch Eudora database between platforms, which requires
only that the DATA folder be the same name.

What is the `trick´ or procedure you describe above for transfer

Remember that Eudora OSE is *not* the same as Eudora. For the purposes
of this discussion, Eudora OSE is Thunderbird, so there is no import
needed.

For "ordinary" Eudora, you will need to import into Thunderbird.

The "trick" is that ***@invalid.invalid asked about importing
from Eudora OSE into Thunderbird, not from Eudora into Thunderbird.

Eudora OSE is not a version of Eudora.

OSE should never have been named Eudora. The result of that was, and
apparently still is, a lot of confusion. First they called it
"Penelope", then Eudora 8 and finally, just before abandoning the
project, Eudora OSE.

After adding viewer.dll to the plugins subfolder you can add the

If you prefer the menu you can select Edit > Message Plug-ins

Ok.. I only see some an Unwrap Text, and some Word Case plug-ins.

Where can the DLL or plug-in be found? In the mean time I'll do some

it's found? Is this button set-up by customizing the toolbar? as I
can find no View toolbar button.
Thx,
-Ed
There is something wrong with my news reader. A few messages that I
posted did not appear, but I can find them in Google groups.

Ok.. I only see some an Unwrap Text, and some Word Case plug-ins.
Where can the DLL or plug-in be found? In the mean time I'll do some
Goo- searches.
Tks,
-Ed
Download Brana Bujenovic's "Greek Message Viewer"
http://www.drivehq.com/web/brana/plugins.htm

It does a lot more than Greek. Unzip the file and put the dll in the
Plugins subdirectory of your Data directory. (Of course with Eudora
closed). When you open Eudora you will find the plug-ins. One for
plain text and one for html. Using Customize you can put them on your
toolbar.

After you have invoked the viewer a window opens where you click on
View from the menu and select Character Encoding. You will then find
a long list to choose from.

The viewer will leave the original message unchanged.

I also had that problem since I chose to hide the toolbar:

1. Options > Display: Check "Show toolbar"

2. Right-click on empty space on toolbar, and select Customize >
Plugins

3. Select "View - Plain Text Version" or "View - HTML Version": The
icon for each plug-in appears in the "Buttons" section o n the right

4. Drag and drop that icon to the toolbar, possibly giving it a name
in the New Tool Bar dialog that pops up.

BTW, does someone know what the point is in providing two items, "View
- Plain Text Version" and "View - HTML Version"?

Thank you.

Any place on the toolbar will do.

You will create a new toolbar when you drop the icon outside of the
icons that are already there. When you want them on the existing
toolbar you have to drop the icons inside the existing ones. (they
will make room).

One click and the received email will turn utf compliant.

I have been looking at The Bat! as an alternative. It seems to import
Eudora files correctly and has a decent user interface.
Does anybody know anything about it?
I'd like to see screenshots of it with 100 folders and 1,000 MBXs.

That's the robustness needed.

After maybe 25 years I would love to be able to stay with Eudora
but it is getting impossible. Someone should fix it... :-)

Have you looked at iLetter? www.iletter.org.uk

The description looks promising, but the Windows version needs
additional programs installed to function. I haven't tried it yet.

I think we cannot replace a great software like Eudora 7 with this trash
with the I at the beginning :\

Is anyone trying to use something to migrate into? I obviously need the
powerful X1 fast search ...and I hate outlook and MS email client...and
I think Thunderbird is a big elephant with crappy performance..
The import eudora's mbx function is also essential.
I'm changing from Win32 to Linux and one problem was what to use for e-mail.

I've settled on claws-mail. Obviously not the Win32 version but it's open
source and there is mention of a Win32 build so it should be easy to find
a compiled version.

I have imported some of my Eudora mailboxes (but the embedded images are
lost). Claws handles UTF-8 and its HTML plugin works well. But searching
is limited which might be a killer for you.

Cheers,
Steven

the well known alternatives like Foxmail, Dreammail, Pegasus are not
pleasent to see (i saw screenshots...)...I would like to know the
opinion by an happy user that has choosen to leave Eudora to migrare to
other solution..
So it appears that there's no alternative with the following features:
- Feature-rich and still actively maintained
- UTF8
- MDI (The Bat = SDI)
- native Win32 application (GTK+, yuck; Mac port, yuck)

You could look at:

<http://www.iletter.org.uk/>

Since its code runs in a (native) browser, it should fit. The MDI
business is irrelevant these days, I'd say.

Thanks for the tip. Forgot to add:
- Windows application.

That's why I'm sticking to Eudora instead of moving to Gmail.

I have a different opinion. I prefer MDI apps, hence TheBat is out.

I'm not talking about a gmail type solution, it's an app that runs
entirely on your machine. You have to install some extra components
(for Windows, anyway), but that's all.

"iLetter is a new e-mail client for Mac OS X and Windows 7"

So it's cross-platform and has a very small user base ("You will be
downloading iLetter v1.9 (downloaded 116 times).")

I don't like cross-platform apps.

Why?

Browsers (except for IE) are cross platform. Word, Excel, Pagemaker,
and quite a few others were originally developed on the Macintosh, now
cross-platform.

Why?
Because they load slower, and always look/feel strange.

So at this point, I guess it's either TheBat and its SDI, or Eudora +
MessageViewer… unless someone knows how to write a proxy application
to sit between the POP server and Eudora, and convert UTF8 to
ISO8859-1 on the fly.
