I thought that was a co-incidence, I watched a video on this on youtube the
day before. Then I see it features (and was maybe prompted by) that video.

The article says it's a unique configuration but there are quite a few
comments on the youtube channel saying otherwise, that BMW have been doing
the hot-V turbo thing for nearly a decade.

That said I like to think that the Mercedes is a result of F1 technology
trickle-down.
