even Joe Saward seems to give the idea some credence:

It is possible that Bernie is thinking of a new series. FIA could not refuse to sanction it, but also that series would have to acknowledge and comply with the international sporting code.

GP2 is effectively a Bernie series.

The stretch is claiming that Bernie is out to create a rival to F1, a series that would pull the rug out from underneath the new owners. That won't happen. For a start the circuits have contracts with FOM, and the Concorde Agreement binds the teams to FOM in the short term. It would also, as Saward points out, require a huge amount of money.

So maybe there is some sort of junior series in the pipeline. But an alternative World Championship? Nah.

Imagine Bernie and Max sitting down over a cup of tea and a scone
(clotted cream for Bernie, Max is partial to whipped cream) talking
about what F1 would look like if they were starting it up now.

What would they take from the current series, safety features for
instance, and what would they have different with the benefit of a
clean sheet.

Both would agree that team budgets would be well below the $100m mark.
With a clean sheet to start from policing budgets would be a lot easier
than trying to introduce them over the top of the current system.

Cars could be a lot less sophistcated but just as quick. They might
well *start* out with a lot of stock parts, especially tyres and
engines. They could choose a balance between aero and mechanical grip
that would allow cars to race one another. The key difficulty would be
in it not becoming essentially a one make series but allowing room for
designers to innovate and the engineers to create set ups which would
give cars different strengths and weaknesses.

On the flip side, if Liberty want to protect themselves and the sport
they should be doing a similar paper excercise with a view to what they
want the sport to be in five+ years time. They may well have their eye
on some short term tinkering but long term success lies in a long term
view.

Interesting article from Saward. I see he mentions all of the things that
have been tied down (owned) by the FIA and Formula 1. He doesn't mention
that, with only two exceptions due to historic claims, no other four wheeled
motor race outside of the F1 calandar may call itself a "Grand Prix".

I am reminded of this because there is currently an advertising push on here
for tickets for "the first grand prix of 2017" which is a race in the Toyta
Racing Series and will be held on the weekend of 11th and 12th of February
at Manfield Park.

8 races in the 2016 Indy series were titled a "Grand Prix"

Indycar is a FIA affiliated series.
