Discussion:
Monitor for O2

Hi,

I have an O2 which haven't been used for some years. The monitor I used
last got thrown out and now I want to use the O2 again.

A flat monitor, Samsung 913N, claimed to be sync-on-green, doesn't show
anything than a green screen. It's ok with other computers.

Does this mean that there are more to it than finding a monitor with SOG
in the specs? Can anyone point me to a model that works?

Thanks,
Jörgen

Any VGA monitor capable of displaying ***@60 Hz will work.
The display connector in the O2 is not special in any way.

Not quite. It needs to be capable of sync-on-green.

It's an Samsumg syncmaster 913N
According to the manual:

Resolution
Optimum resolution 1280 x ***@60 Hz
Maximum resolution 1280 x ***@75 Hz
Input Signal, Terminated
RGB Analog
0.7Vp-p Positive at 75 ohms
Separate H/V sync, Composite sync, SOG, TTL level positive or negative.

When running there is only a green colour on the display, same as when I
tested with other monitors without sync-on-green. The reported resolution
onscreen is ***@75 Hz.

So, is SOG not really sync-on-green?

I have a question. When you've had it work with the other
systems, was it with the same cable? Maybe it is something about the
cable which you have. I've had 13W3 cables which would not allow my Sun
monitors to work with Sun systems.

And -- have you tried any other monitors with it with different
cables? Could it be a problem with the graphics card?

While not an O2, My Indigo 2 with "Extreme" graphics card) is
working very nicely with a 17" Sun CRT monitor which happened to be
sitting next to it. I haven't tried it with the various LCD monitors
which are connected to other systems around the place, this one worked,
and it was close to the system while I have been playing with it.

About time to go in for the "out of box" experience, now that I
have the C compiler (an f77 compiler FWIW) installed, and gotten my
favorite editor (jove) compiled, along with less, gtar, flex, bison and
bzip2. Now I can be somewhat more comfortable with the system.

I tried installing a downloaded pre-compiled ssh (for Irix 6.2,
which is what I am running), but I did something wrong, as it seems to
want some other prerequisites first.

Good Luck,
DoN.

All three monitors that I have tested now have had their own cables, and
they work with normal PC's. When I tested the O2 a few years ago I think
I used its own cable with an adapter to some 3+10 connector.

Yes, the card could be damaged of course.

Not quite. It needs to be capable of sync-on-green.
Then I suppose I have never seen a monitor that wasn't capable of SOG.

(We had a fairly large fleet of O2s at one point and used a wide array
of monitors that were both SGI and non-SGI on them. I've never seen a
monitor that was capable of the native res and refresh that didn't give
me a proper picture with the O2.)

That's nonsense. The O2 works fine with non-SOG capable monitors. BTDT a
dozen times.

The O2 does put out SOG which on non-SOG monitors can cause a greenish
picture if the monitor doesn't have proper input filters, though.

In addition to some of the cabling suggestions that others have made,
it's possible that your O2 is set to use a different resolution than
your monitor is capable of sensing/displaying. If you can connect to
the O2 via a serial terminal or via remote telnet/ssh, you can reset
the display resolution via the command line.

Something like "/usr/gfx/setmon 1280x1024_60HZ" should probably work.

Good idea, will try that.

I had a similar problem on one ancient SunOS machine. I used the HP
L1955, but the sync on green was not active by default. You should
probably find this feature in OSD and enable it. Of course, make sure
that the O2 output resolution matches the one supported by monitor.

Hi,
I have an O2 which haven't been used for some years. The monitor I used
last got thrown out and now I want to use the O2 again.
Success!
It seems the main problem was that I started without network cable in,
making the system wait with a blank monitor for a really long time before
continuing. With the cable it came along fine.

The monitor doesn't support sync_on_green.
Running nvram shows "sync_on_green=". That is, an empty string.
