Overtaking at the Hungaroring is always going to tight. Vettel was well
past and Bottas should have let him go. Valtteri seems to have been
suffering from red mist syndrome because he later understeered into
Ricciardo and then claimed that Daniel should have known that his (V’s)
tyres were shot.

Vettel shouldn't have cut in front of a car on 49 lap old tyres on a corner
and expected it to be able to nimbly get out of the way. It's basic physics.

his (V's) tyres were shot.
Bottas was right, Dan's team should have warned him not to push Bottas when
he had a broken front wing then take his downforce away and expect him to be
able to still steer on tyres that were 50 laps old. Dan should never have
been going around the outside. On Sky Horner was live when it happened and
said "he's going around the outside, I hope he doesn't understeer..." Horner
could see it was likely, Dan took a chance and got away with it but it
certainly wasn't just a case of Bottas "suffering from red mist syndrome".

Just because the commentary didn't tell you how old Bottas' tyres were
doesn't mean they were weren't past their 'best before' distance.

I watched the race live so I couldn't cut back and forth to the driver cams (there is no rewind on the F1 TV live broadcast.) But I plan to later this week to see how much steering input Bottas was pushing. I expect not so much for the VET touch but a lot for the RIC hit. It will also be interesting to see what comes over the team radio.

Speaking of team radio, VER was clearly unhappy with his engine issue. They don't censor the F1 TV feed and it was "colorful..."

Rear facing camera for both incidents; which makes sense.

Horner was being interview on Sky when Ricciardo went to overtake VB.
He said before they collided, "What is he doing going round the outside?
He should expect VB to go wide". Ricciardo knew full well VB's tyres
were shot, he'd seen the Ferraris get past very easily. He was lucky not
to be punted off. Has he been taking lessons from Verstappen?

Bottas must have seen Ricciardo (who maybe didn’t know that Valtteri was
missing a wing and had clapped-out tyres) coming. Surely he should have
backed off so that he *didn’t* run wide. I know it goes against all a
racing driver’s instincts but it would have saved him a lot of work in the
next race.

Dans team told him the above and to 'get after him'. Also if Dan couldn't
see that Valtteri was struggling with his rears then he's not the driver I

I watched it.

An overtaking car has an obligation to keep clear until the driver can
maneuver without hitting the car he is overtaking.

The only problem is that none of the video they showed made it clear if
there was a time that Vettel was clear ahead, or if there never was such
a moment.

One thing I will say is that Bottas was on much older tires, so might
very well have been unable to slow enough after Vettel did get clear.

Both cars are entitled to racing room.

Vettel had room to his right. Rosberg wasn't left any.

This is very near to my heart at the moment as earlier this month a
competitor was attempting an overtake on me, had lots of room to his
right (while I was up against the inside curbing), moved toward the apex
before he was clear, touched his rear tire to my front, and spun right
in front of me.

I was fortunate in that our collision was at quite slow speed, and he
hit the very strong nose of my car with the sidepod of his.

Not actually how it works... as you might notice with cars often run
out of road on the outside of bends.

Agree.

On Ch4 a slomo was shown from above and ahead. VB left wheels were off the track/on grass and SV just cut left, clipping the front right corner of VB. SV was clearly alongside and overtaking but left nowhere for VB to go - braking on grass ain't that effective.
As usual a lack of race craft from SV
Should have been a penalty for SV.

I thought he was well-bred and educated? He needs a proof reader if he wants
to keep that illusion up.

"in a more lower-profile way"? My English teacher would be turning over in
is grave if I wrote that - especially in a paid-for published article
(rather than a posting somewhere on teh webz, I do let standards slip in a
casual setting).

When I saw he's wrting for the BBC instead of racing I was going to say
'those who can do... ' but surely that would have to apply to writing as
well?

Other than the grammar faux pas his didn't say anything that I didn't (other
than his wild speculation about Bottas' motive or intent).

I see his point, but the opposite view is that with better tires and
track position for turn 3, it was silly of Vettel to not give Bottas
more room.

I haven't seen any video that shows that Vettel was ever clear ahead,
and until he gets clear ahead, he doesn't get unfettered rights to
defend. Bottas is still entitled to racing room and Vettel was both in
the wrong (if he was never clear ahead) and foolish not to give it,
regardless.

As he should have. He basically says Bottas was driving sub-par for the race

fastest laps of the race so far. The whole article was self-contradictory
speculation (which I believe was way off base anyway).

Read the comments under the article. BBC F1 articles always receive a
lot of anti Mercedes/Hamilton comments. His article didn't get as many,
most were accusing him of being twat and talking out of his arse. Last
time I looked there were over 1,000 comments - that's a massive number.

His previous articles have been received in the same way. Jolyon writes
with an odour of sour grapes, he's not perceived to have achieved enough
in F1 to make the kind of comments he does about successful drivers.
Don't forget, Renault couldn't wait to get rid of him, despite the money
he bought to the team.

I looked at a sample when the article first appeared, before the loons
arrived.

He's received a lot of stick for his article.
As he should have. He basically says Bottas was driving sub-par for
the race then as an aside says 'somehow' when needed Bottas managed
to put inthe two fastest laps of the race so far. The whole article
was self-contradictory speculation (which I believe was way off
base anyway). When you say he got a lot of stick.. Where and from
whom?
Read the comments under the article. BBC F1 articles always receive
a lot of anti Mercedes/Hamilton comments. His article didn't get as
many, most were accusing him of being twat and talking out of his
arse. Last time I looked there were over 1,000 comments - that's a
massive number.
Ahh ok, thanks. I never bother to scroll that far down as those
types of 'forums' give a voice to every crackpot and his retarded
uncle. The power of the internet!

His previous articles have been received in the same way. Jolyon
writes with an odour of sour grapes, he's not perceived to have
achieved enough in F1 to make the kind of comments he does about
successful drivers. Don't forget, Renault couldn't wait to get rid
of him, despite the money he bought to the team.
Yep, I remember. He is a good race comentator (or at least he was
when he guested on GP2 during his 'gap year') and I'd love to see
him replace Croft in F1. That's the first written article I've seen
of his and I'm really not impressed. IMO he should stick to the
shorter format spoken commentary.
He's had a good education, or should have had. He's learned how to
talk well and commentating doesn't require a lot of long term
thinking. If he takes over from Daddy Palmer, the company will soon
be in the shite. I reckon Daddy got him the job to keep him out of
the way.
Have you heard this interview with the BBC from last year?

I hadn't heard that. He sounds like a bit of a prat - odd that the Beeb gave
him a job after that (and odd that he took it really).

He's a miserable bastard. I reckon his mechanics got pissed off with
him. Getting a job with the BBC wouldn't have been a problem, his
father will have contacts.

I know this will sound crazy to a lot of folks here, but...

You don't actually have to have been at the very top of F1 to know what
is and is not smart and/or legal to do on a race track.

You don't even have to have been on a track... in fact for some people
it appears a handicap. They confuse their experience with that of real
racing drivers.
