What Did You Watch? 2017-09-05 (Tuesday)

As a multi-day summary I watched:

HALT AND CATCH FIRE: The episodes for the new season that have aired so
far. The show started out slow, but got good again once everyone
reunited. Donna is a parasite. Gordon is still alive and his brain is
still mostly working. I liked Cameron better as a blonde and I feel bad
for her that the gaming industry was taken over by stupid shoot-em-up games.

THE DEFENDERS: The episodes for the new season. The show started out
slow, but got good again once everyone reunited. Well, everyone but IRON
FIST who still sucks as a character. The major problem here is that the
'super heroes' continuously fail to remove the enemy threat. The talk
and they slap people down, but they never do what is needed to keep
people down. Meanwhile, a secret lair filled with magic live forever
juice sort of negates the idea that anyone involved cannot simply return
next season. The secret scene past the end credits was a promo for THE
PUNISHER rather than for any of the other 4 series.

TEEN WOLF: The latest few episodes in which it seems like every past
character is returning for the final half season...every past character
except my favorite character. :-( Only 4 episodes left.

PREACHER: I was right about the S&M scene Jesse was brought to while
looking for God awhile back. Beyond that, this show just keeps being
weird and over the top. I know the religious nutters say that they got
offended by the idea of Jesus having sex, but really, I think they were
actually offended by the portrayal of the Pope and Cardinal and the
general consensus that these figures are clueless.

DISJOINTED: The first 2 episodes of this new Netflix sitcom starring
Kathy Bates and a band of druggies. This show is offered up by Chuck
Lorre and features one of his typical, unbearable laugh tracks. The
series is supposed to be decidedly pro-marijuana, I think, but it also
freely promotes the idea that people who use the stuff are operating at
a diminished brain capacity. A few of the characters have the potential
to be interesting, but there are also a lot of annoying characters and
annoyingly stupid drug humor. After 2 episodes I quit watching because
Netflix has integrated commercials into this show (Lays potato chips)
and I don't want Netflix to think that commercials are ok.

MY EX-EX: A 2015 comedy (romcom) film about a woman who dates loser
men. This film features a pair of women from WYNONNA EARP and a menage
a trois...but don't expect any of it to be good.

GHOST IN THE SHELL: The 2017 Scarlett Johansson film where she plays
some sort of android-ish character. This tried to make sense and was at
least better than the unwatchably bad animated version, but it still
came off as a dippy comic book tale where the pieces don't fit together
in any coherent way...or at least not with any depth.

Side note: Anim8r, I got your email and tried to respond, but I was
using a friend's computer and AOL's website and the two apparently
refused to play nice so sending a reply failed multiple times.

Second side note: Apparently eternal-september is also not working on
my home computer so I'm re-sending this via albasani.

What did you watch?

Yes, I was about to try to do a WDYW? myself, when either ES or my Unison app, completely failed - right now I can't access *anything* on usenet that way. (So I'm stuck with GG right now... :( )

In terms of me, I had a completely full workday yesterday, and only managed to watch "Violetta" when I got home...

Recorded for later: Season(?!) finales of "The Bold Type" and "Shooter".

After not being able to log on for a day or two, I was finally able to
log on last night then this morning I couldn't log on again.

From the eternal-september website:
Technical information

eternal-september.org can be accessed via the following server names and
ports::

Client Settings

Server name: news.eternal-september.org
Port : 119 (NNTP)
Port : 563 (encrypted connection NNTPS)
Servername: reader80.eternal-september.org
Port : 80
Servername: reader443.eternal-september.org
Port : 443 (encrypted connection NNTPS)
The number of concurrent connections to the server is limited to 4

The old reader server news.eternal-september.org had to be replaced by
new hardware just before the scheduled replacement date. The new server
is up and running, DNS changes are underway. The new server is called
reader.eternal-september.org, but will also be available under the usual
name as soon as the DNS changes have fully propagated. Currently,
connections on port 80 and 443 are not available yet. These will be
available again soon. The new server has an SSL certificate for both
reader.eternal-september.org and news.eternal-september.org. UUCP
connectivity is currently not available, but will be re-established
tomorrow.

I checked my settings and tried switching from the port 119 to the
encrypted port 563 and that so far seems to have worked.

Yeah, I don't know what they do about the hand. Obviously there was no
point in going to China and dragging Madame Chow back since she's just
running around free. Even if you got them in prison and gave them a
life sentence they'd outlive it. :) You can't even *kill* them!

What did you watch?
Last weekend's THE LOVE BOAT from ME-TV.

Finally, the senses shattering exit of Julie Your Cruise Director and
the mind numbing origin of her sister Judy (Your Cruise Director)!!!
It begins with no Julie in the credits, and Judy is listed as a standard
guest star. Captain Stubing calls in the crew to tell them Julie got
married (Vicki guesses the name of the groom [Marty Chenault]* but it
meant nothing to me, I have no idea if it was a pre-existing character)
but they did it so quickly there was no time for any guests. Since
married women don't work, everybody took for granted she'd quit, having
had heartfelt notes delivered for each of them that we were never privy
to.

In the stupidest idea for a cruise ever, Patty Duke has booked an all
women's cruise, where they all show up to the nightclub in their
nighties and have all female lingerie contests and conga line dancing.
If this would actually appeal to women they're from further away than
Venus. Anyway Judy has come aboard to spend the weekend with Julie to
get over her recent divorce, and Julie has stood her up. The new cruise
director is Diane Ladd, who is a right bitch, openly insulting crew and
passengers alike and flat refusing to do her job, right down to not even
giving people directions! The secret backstory is that Judy used to be
a cruise director and trained Julie, so we know where this is going.
Bert Convy and Arte Johnson sneak aboard in drag. Doc is dating a
jealous bitch who actually objects to him greeting passengers as they
come on board.. Gopher and Ace try to score with anybody they can.
For some reason they felt Dianne Ladd needed a happy ending, so she fell
in love with Arte and quit before anybody tossed her overboard.

Okay, some googling reveals that Dean Jones (!) played Marty Chenault in
a very special 2 part Love Boat at the end of the previous season...
ugh, that was that horrible musical episode where he was a creepy movie
producer whose brother she had almost married previously. Nice to know
she's keeping it in the family.

She hasn't been back yet, either, but I won't miss her.

I do miss Dylan O'Brien. He was the heart of the show and his injury
(as well as his busy schedule) pretty much removed him from the final
season.

The Lay's commercials even 'aired' as commercial breaks rather than
being integated as product placements.

Katherine Barrell (Nicole Haught) and Tamara Duarte (Rosita Bustillos).

Those WYNONNA EARP surnames sure are on the nose.

Same thing with Luke Cage. Supposedly his skin is impenetrable but he's
a normal guy underneath. So pretty much anything we've seen happen to
him should have killed him. Certainly being punched in the face by Iron
Fist should. And I don't understand why tough skin makes you strong ...

Agreed. The G-forces from some of the hits/tosses he took should have
left him dead. Basically, these are 'powers' that haven't been thought
out very well beyond comic-book cuteness. Daredevil was doing it (ever
changing abilities) too near the end with claims about a building being
empty while we were seeing cops in the garage area and minions as needed
everywhere.

If you go back and review the WDYW? threads you missed, I've been talking about this one.

Basically, I liked episodes #3-6 (esp. the end to ep. #6 which was a real shock!), but not the stuff at either end.
I thought the ending was particularly weak, esp. with the "spoiler" re: Daredevil.

And I agree that Iron Fist *sucks* as a character (but not his sidekick - someone give Jessica Henwick her own show!!) - I was rather hoping he'd end up dead.

Bottom line: It was ok, but I preferred "Jessica Jones".

P.S. You're RONG!! Fred! - I vastly prefer Stephen Amell's Arrow to this Iron Fist dude!! :p

If that was a natural end-point to the season (as the producers claimed) I'd
sure hate to see an unnatural one.

I get that they were over a barrel with the injury to Phillippe but that was
a horrible season finale given that they're not even assured of a season 3.
No part of the story had any kind of finality to it at all.

Refreshing my memory, Ryan Phillippe broke his leg Sunday, July 16, 2017.
He said it was a freak accident during a family outing. I haven't read
any details of how it happened.

I didn't really care for the episode. Super assasin Solotov didn't have
much of a plan after all. He impersonated a salesman to get close to
Julie, but ultimately it didn't mean much. The whole "placing a bomb
in the church" (which Bob Lee never told anyone about, so it's still there)
and "suicide vest" seemed out of character for him.

A sniper is the least likely guy to be able to pull off an infiltration.
They're not gregarious. They're loners.

I thought maybe he'd just shoot the passive-aggressive turd who had been
sexually harassing Julie (who certainly did overreact) because the audience
just wants the guy dead, but maybe Isaac will do that. I was still expecting
Solotov to kidnap Julie; he didn't.

The reveal of Atlas... It's the guy from L.A. Law and Clash of the Titans!
Sigh. I love Ray Harryhausen's effects, but the movie isn't very good
otherwise. I was annoyed that Atlas just turned out to be the boss
of Memphis's friend. A U.S. Senator cannot pull off an alleged world-wide
conspiracy. He's too public a figure. But I'm sure he's just part of
a still-larger conspiracy, which is part of an even larger conspiracy,
till the final reveal that it's a conspiracy across multiple universes.

I didn't like the creation of Solotov, who was already a super sniper.
Everyone in his unit had just given up the battle but he held off
what we thought was an entire Russian unit, till it was revealed that
Atlas brought in his own forces. I had no idea that you could just
release sarin gas, killing everyone, then some time later, resurrect
anyone you felt like. I loved the stabbing the needle to pierce the
heart, without removing his uniform or apparently any body armour
he wore. He had a secret suitcase of magic fluid but no betadine
to clean the skin so he doesn't give the dead guy a deadly infection
in his heart.

Memphis just acted stupid throughout, dragging the reporter and the
corrupted Marine around town with her, apparently calling everyone she
knew at the FBI and U.S. Marshals, having forgotten just last week
that she was compromised.

In any event, I'm glad that they didn't try to wrap things up. I don't
know what the hell they could have done without making the mess of
this episode much much worse, given the footage they'd already shot.

If Phillippe is able to return to work, I hope they'll just go back into
production, finishing the two remaining scripts, or if the show is renewed,
the two scripts will be added to the renewal for season 3.

Hah! It wasn't advertised as a summer finale!

The best part of the episode were the Gus and Shawn watching Shooter
scene, making cracks about the bald black guy teamed with a white guy.
Too bad the guys behind the USA promos are never the ones who work
on the actual shows.

Corin Nemec was in IMDb's credits. I didn't spot him. Did anyone
catch who he played?

I didn't read how he did it either. Just that the producers said they had a
natural end point for the season so would reduce the episode number to 8
instead. That was hardly a natural end-point.

That made little sense nor did it seem in keeping with Solotov's MO for
secrecy. The only thing he did that made sense was to hack Julie's phone
but even that it was hacking as magic. Apparently the hack made it voice
actived so he could hear everything that went on in the room the phone
happened to be in.
I also liked how Solotov had that star trek transporter that's becoming so
popular in tv shows. He was in Mexico than back in costume for Julie within
minutes.

I think most people figured they'd wrap up the Solotov arc and have Bob Lee
and Memphis set to go after Atlas in a 3rd season. As it was there was no
wrap-up to anything.

Could we have some hint as to what the fuck it is that Atlas is doing?
They never actually did anything with the drug trafficking plot. Why
the hell is that anything to do with a United States Senator?

This guy is too lame to be on Red's blacklist.

Nope. I noticed him in the credits. But I don't think he was in the
episode. Must have ended up on the cutting room floor... (I've seen
this happen before.)

Well, Atlas is a truly amazing organization. They somehow managed to
orchestrate the homeless lady, the other traffic, the bus, and Tio's own
reactions perfectly. Not only did they create the chokepoint, but they
managed to put both Memphis's car and the bus in the same place at the
same time in the middle of a traffic jam, *and* predict that Tio would
then freak out, bail out of the car, run to the bus, and have an
operative on board ready to intercept her and stick her with a needle.

Now *that's* an organization you don't want to piss off.
