The rest of Canada deserves an answer.
Multiple choice answer:

a) because we are strong enough to act independently of Toronto's control,
which makes us the envy of every other state.

b) because we incur Toronto's wrath because we can appeal directly to
Washington when we have problems, and usually get what we want. The rich in
Toronto don't like this because they can't profit from delaying it.

c) because we do not need military help with snow clearance.

d) because we attract emigrants from Ontario who say unanimously how bad
Ontario is.

e) all of the above

It was 100 billion
There appears to be no commonly accepted number, but the figure $90-100
billion is used more frequently.

No matter how you slice it, the NEP was a crime against humanity.

Albertans' human rights were violated when Trudeau removed the right to be
treated equally under the law, which exposed other rights to assault, like
the rights of property, happiness, and to have a future. Trudeau made sure
Ontarians had those, but denied them to Albertans.

For this crime, he deserved the death penalty, and a life sentence for
staging the FLQ "crisis" to remove Quebec's human rights.

What a travesty of a country. Alberta secedes.

I didn't say we needed permission from you - only Albertans can grant that
in a referendum.

I said you have permission to boot us out if you are unhappy.

Consider your constitution to be a "pre-nup".

Having been to New Hampshire (lovely state - Vermont is too but I haven't
been to Maine, shame on me) I can say the "die" part is just a statement.

No one wants anyone to die - only a sick mind thinks that way.

His choice of words may be questionable, but he is right in that it was

they destroyed in the name of their 'national' policy? Shameful.

BJS,
spare us the pathos "lives destroyed" what a crock. AB was/is part of any
national policy Anything that's happened in Canada has happened withthe full
participation of the inmates of Albert and Quebec and......
What criminal actions the NEP I hardly think so the FLQ crisis. If I
remember rightly the only guy killed was Pierre LAPorte and he was a govt
employee done by the terrorists. Aboriginal policies are a crock. All you
upstanding citizens in AB were standing in line to grab a piece of the
action from the railways for next to nothing when they started to sell off
the land granted by the government. The question of original ownership is a
can of worms at best. Because someone says something was there's doesn't
make it so.

Funny a couple of years back we all read about some guys who had succeeded
with cold fusion too. They we PhDs I believe. Strange no-one has bee able
to duplicate their results sad too in a way cause if they had the oil and
gas in Alberta would be as important as a supply of buggy whips although in
AB there'd still be a need for lots of Vaseline for guys like you to grease

The rest of Canada deserves an answer.
a) because we are strong enough to act independently of Toronto's control,
which makes us the envy of every other state.
b) because we incur Toronto's wrath because we can appeal directly to
Washington when we have problems, and usually get what we want. The rich in
Toronto don't like this because they can't profit from delaying it.
c) because we do not need military help with snow clearance.
d) because we attract emigrants from Ontario who say unanimously how bad
Ontario is.

didn't piss away millions on buying a clapped out packing plant from a smart
ass easterner named pocklington. How are the Oilers doing?

This fact has never been denied, but your spin on it is absurd. Klein went

What 'consequences' could those be? Either suffer one more minute of
Ontario's greed or live according to our means as a state in the Union?

The latter sounds pleasant compared to the former. Then we could extend
I-15 all the way to Edmonton with federal interstate money.

We could adopt the Mega Millions as our state lottery, adopt more democratic
institutions, hand over the military bases to the US Army and Air Force,
have no state sales or income taxes, and an Alaska-style rebate.

It can all be ours when Alberta secedes.

The US would only formally take over if we democratically allow it.

The Canadians think they own us and that we're squatters on their territory.

True freedom and independence is a myth - we simply have to gain as much as

Since even the poorest state, Mississippi, has a higher per-capita income

comparison.

If that is indeed the case, then Alberta has to become a state. Why would

Not at all. The location of a head office simply means where people go to

Toronto controls the feds, and the feds (apparently) control the CNC and

Mr. Macdonald,
Please stick (more or less) to the subject of this thread. If you continue
to confuse the afflicted in AB with logic instead of sarcastic commentary as
to their intellectual capabilities, it is possible they might not play
again. Logic to them is like water was to the wicked witch of the west in
the Wizard of Oz, logic dissolves them into a pile on the golden streets of
AB to be blown away by the warm winter winds coming down from Fort
MacMurray.

There is hope though I hear the new C/Crap will be sending missionaries west
after the next spring break-up to spread the gospel according to Ontario to
the poor ignorants of AB.

Save a soul! BUY an AB burger.

Ontario is by far the biggest beneficiary from the US - the daily trade
keeps their economy booming.

Alberta prospers because we can sell our petroleum there.

The difference is we are happy with that relationship while Ontarians
constantly demand more and become indignant when it doesn't work 100% in
their favor (so far, it's working 99.9% of the time, but that isn't good
enough for the rich.).

You'll never miss the US until they're gone. WHen that happens, you'll be

I love it the moral highground. I guess you got a real happy bunch of Metis

the community right? As to the FLQ I shudder to think the treatment they'd
get today so that might be a lesson to AB who knows? Hindsight is always
20/20.
The facts presented in 1970 were limited by government secrecy rules. Now
that more is being revealed a more disturbing picture is emerging. One of a
greedy man looking for an excuse to suspend human rights. Problem was the
FLQ weren't the terrorists - the Army was for occupying Quebec and Montreal.
It's called revision.

What we watch is our business - but the fear remains of an invasion by
federal troops on the orders of Bell Canada, interested in protecting its
Supreme Court ordered monopoly. The local authorities lack the time and
funding to enforce that rule, so the Army will do it for them. That is
another reason to disband the military.

Alberta has:

Scholastic achievement scores much higher than the average.

A standard of living 10% higher than the US urban average.

The fastest growing building and housing boom in the country.

A government program to provide high-speed internet access to the entire
province.

A business-friendly government that indirectly provides much better for its
citizens by providing jobs, than by using socialist handouts.

No provincial sales tax.

The most hours of sunshine in a year, the most beautiful national parks and
the cleanest air in North America.

Not suprised, here to say the least. Your toothless insults have little
affect on those of us who are enlightened and live out here where the sun

Education, eh? Let's maybe start with "a way" and "dopwn". When we correct
those issues, we'll try and get you into a good adult education program
where we can begin to teach you a valid combination of math and american
history, perhaps even touch on some of the issues of today.

Your arguments tend to be based on what you think you know and what, in your
opinion, is "common knowledge", yet you have nothing to substantiate your
comments with. As I said before, your _perception_ is interesting, yet I'd
be the first to iterate that it is completely false.

brag about your lot size? What a moron. I'm not sure how you thought you

We LIKE our yard (which is slightly larger than a postage stamp at 80x45
feet, by the way, so BFD). It's cozy and a good size for our family, who
are involved locally in the community, on block events, the YMCA and several
playgroups. Not to mention that we actually WORK in Alberta (if that

SO you admit the capitalist government includes using taxpayers money to
exploit markets via the internet that would otherwise be unprofitable In
other words a subsidy or socialism for the rich
No, I don't. I stated that the recovery of capital costs in implementing
infrastructure would not be able to be overcome where demand is low. If you
live out in the boonies, you can thank whatever government it was that gave
you phone service (probably PC, by the way) because it wouldn't have gotten
there without the money of people who live in the city and appropriate
dipersion of funds to those in need.

The primary focus was that of eliminating 'digital devide'. If profitable
businesses come out of that wake, that means more people in the workforce,
more money to be spent on goods and services, and less people on social
assistance. In many rural areas there are several competing internet
companies that are small shops and do fine competing with the likes of Telus
and Shaw, although it may take them years to pay off gov't loans and become
profitable.
Post by santa
IN otherwords you live in fantasy land so whatever the govt says

No I don't, but I do read the Bible and believe that there are a lot of good
things that can be taken from it.

I vote, attend public debates and information systems, voice my concerns to
others and frequently send letters to MPs, ministers, the premier and local
politicians. I believe that a lot of good things can be gained from that
too.

You're right, none whatsoever. Especially not that five months of income
that came out of federal reserves. I'm sure glad you're the educated one!

Just because it's federal, it doesn't mean it's yours because you simply
chose to move out to Ontario when the going got tough in Manitoba.
Albertans pay more into federal coffers than any other province, and if we
can keep people off the federal assistance programs for 5 months longer than
Ontario then good on us. More money for you anyways, right?

YOu mean you don't pay shipping in AB? Gee wilikers batman.
You're not making sense on this issue at all. Are you saying that we get a
deal because it covers shipping charges? Are you saying that Ontario
doesn't pay shipping charges? Are you saying that Alberta doesn't make any
of it's own goods? Although a little confused by your bipolarity, I will
state this:
- Alberta doesn't pay the 7%-15% taxes at the till that most Canadians pay.
Ontario does.
- Every province that brings in goods from other provinces, the USA or other
countries pays shipping. It does not all travel through Ontario, making it
somehow magically cheaper for those of you in that area.

Hmm...not sure how winters got into the mix (but, I'm really not suprised at
this point) but the fact of the matter is that Calgary, where I live, is
about 7 degrees closer to 0 all winter long, and we only get about 1/3 the
snow cover.

I'm from Manitoba originally, and you can't tell me that there are fewer
bugs there. There are 10,000 lakes in MB (admittedly, 9,890 more than AB),
and billions of litres more free standing water. That means more mosquitos.

Perhaps you could give me a simple proof of Stoke's theorem or point me to
a good Fourier transform algorithm for the Intel 486 type chip? As to
American history how about a discourse on the affect of Lincoln's
appointment of Ulysses S. Grant as replacement to General McClellan?

You mean all this stuff I tell you isn't common knowledge? Gee can I play
Trivial Pursuit with you?

Insult you? Was I insulting? Ge I didn't know Prove me wrong! 200 houses
well la-de-da. I don't live there thank the stars but there's one
development that's supposed to have 6000 houses in it in the burbs of
TOronto.

You're right 80 by 45 is pretty small. They have dick girth improvers on
the net maybe they have lot swellers too? The YMCA you say, now there's a
group that helps the disadvantaged. Does that make you a good person?
What's you problem about my comments about porn? Someone said it was legal I
said it wasn't and cited a couple of cases. That doesn't condone it. Evil
doesn't go away just because people like you don't want to talk about it.
You know I suddenly realized that whoever was probably referring to the
stuff you can get at the corner video stores, which I don't consider porn
just adult entertainment. I haven't read the criminal code nor followed any
of the court activities on the tits and ass type videos available so I'm not
certain what's out there and what's not I'll leave it to you to tell me.
You don't read very well do you? Who said anything about suggestive poses?
Funny how you can jump from a to z without anything in between.

You stated cost! If infrastructure would be covered by the government in
other words a subsidy. Is the government going to reap whatever income (not
necessarily profits) from sale of bandwidth in upper rubberboot AB? I doubt
it more likely it will be Telus which is a private company (formerly AGT
and BC Tel both govt companies I believe until sold to "friends".)

So your plan for the unemployed is to either load them on a bus or let em
starve in the streets eh? Or do you want the personal satisfaction of
personally feeding and sheltering them? What's this federal reserve shit
there are none, the country owes itself something like 500 billion dollars
much of which was racked up by lyin Brian. The only good thing is we owe it
to ourselves and eventually inflation will just make it disappear.

The parks are just as much mine as yours or ABs. Spare me the song about how
much AB pays in transfer payments, I see it's right up at the trough looking
for fed handouts whenever a little problem occurs. What happened to the
Heritage fund? What has Ralf been doing there?

Actually the pollution we enjoy in Ontario apparently (do you know the word
apparently?) comes largely from our dear friends to the south although we do
make some of our own. As to manufacturing In either AB or Ontario it's on
its way to China. Do you have any auto assembly plants in Calgary? How
about locomotive manufacture or maybe ship building? How's the AB fishery
doing just like NFD&LABs I 'll bet.
Didn't you know we don't do anything here much except count the money we
extract from Alberta, clean it up and then ship it to Quebec along with some
of our own.

Why, thank you for the kind words about the way I have with people. I just
love people who whine about how bad things are and how the grass is always b
etter somewhere else and how their decisions and mores are the only ones
that are correct. It's funny how any contradiction of their understandings
of the world leads almost immediately to hostility. I guess people just
need to be correct! My shit smells something awful but you know what? I
don't care. Running for office is a waste of time, I'm old, tired and I
don't give a shit. Its the oly good thing about being old.

I hope you enjoy your children and your suburbia. I hope you live long
enough, stay coupled long enough and earn enough to get what you think you
need. I really do wish you well.

"Enlightened" well good for you Can we expect same sex marriages in AB
anytime soon? Are they toothless insults? You sort of sound like you had a

I don't think that Albertans are Stupid. I'm surprised that over 10 posts
can come out of a very poor troll though.

I'm not sure which one I like the most? Oh! OK, it's the one where The
State Of Alberta immediately assumes the post originated in Ontario and acts
in a knee jerk manner. Man, that guy is Ontario-centric in his hatred.

I wonder how he'd be, compared to the person I made friends with, who was a
"slow speaking Southerner" (from South of the Mason / Dixon) that was a
Softball nut. All he knew of Canada was the great times he'd spent in Val
d'OR, Québec (close to Palmarolle, the town of NHL Hero Rogie Vachon) where
(as he said) "they didn't speak English in the bars, but we had a great
time!"

Being the egoist that I am I suspect you are referring to "Santa" which is
me. I do in fact live in Ontario and have done so for the past 30 some
years. I was born and grew up in Winnipeg and lived there for a
considerable time. I would have stayed except I had this really basic urge
to keep on eating and feeding my partner and our child. Call it a weakness
if you want.
TSOA (the state of Alberta) , Terry Pearson, TRO ( the right one), are all
one and the same I believe. It and I use the non gendered noun deliberately,
scribbles under a number of names. He also runs a website which used to be
and may still be called rightpoint.ca. It's full of not very well
researched or organized material on the horrors of the federal system and
how life would just be so much better if Alberta were on its own.

I find the "it" funny. It's so easy to be patronizing toward him and I must
confess I do so with the greatest of pleasure. Keying is one of the few
things that I am able to do these days so I fill my time trying to puncture
hot air bags such as TSOA.

I'm a small "L" liberal by nature and people who espouse the dogma of groups
like the CA get up my nose, so I sneeze on them so to speak. I just love to
verbally slash at TSOA.
In my not humble opinion collectively Canadians everywhere never had it so
good. They live longer, they eat better, they are better housed, freer,
healthier generally, their lives are more their own and most have more
"stuff" than they ever had. If it's so bad here why do people keep on
coming with just the clothes on their backs? That takes either a real sense
of adventure or a desperation borne of terrible conditions where they lived.

BTW there is in my experience little difference between people all over the
country, everyone carries a certain amount of baggage some good some bad.

Reason, you should do a little reading about the development of the west.
Up until oil and gas money started to appear in AB it was just a sleepy
little province where the big event of the year was the Stampede. It was
just another piece of land you crossed to get to the west coast. Oh YAH
there was Banff and Jasper but that wasn't for the poor folks. They were
both federal make-work projects from the depression.
How's the Ballet in Alberta, how's the Theatre scene? I guess if you like
watching toothless millionaires skate around aimlessly chasing a hard piece
of black rubber and calling themselves athletes Calgary and Edmonton are for
you. I gather the latest cultural attraction is a watered down pansy bull
run! How come in the land-o-ralf there are still a whole bunch of
do-gooders who don't want to let a bunch of dumb assholes kill themselves.
Are they worried about medical costs why not just shoot the injured both
bulls and people?

The only advantage I can see for AB is its closer to the west coast than
Manitoba or Ontario.

In any event it really doesn't matter you're where you are I'm where I am
and that's a fact.

Reason, you should do a little reading about the development of the west.
Fifty years ago, Alberta was a have-not province, much the way Montana ranks
in the bottom 5 US states economically today. Manitoba was a wealthy
distribution hub for the rest of the prairies, rich agriculturally, and
well-established at least 75 years ahead of the rest of the west.
Saskatchewan was sitting on the largest supply of high quality wheat in the
world, and a lucrative share of mineral resources for it's small population.
BC was endowed with a variety of wealthy industries, including forestry,
fishing, fruit production, mining and a very prosperous port and
distribution industry. The Maritimes were gifted with rich fishery
resources which they had every opportunity to manage well, but didn't.
Quebec prospered due to having a rich economy based on rich farmland, a
large population and Montreal, which was a wealthy port and home location
for many of Canada's largest corporations. The hydro power resources of
Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec are truly massive. Ontario had every advantage
in being able to access natural resources from other regions cheaply and had
a virtual monopoly on manufacturing and trade.

The Give and Take of Confederation:
the net gain (loss), by province, through federal transfers from the
1960's through the 1990's (billions of 1999' $)

Newfoundland 74
Ontario (81)
Prince Edward Island 19
Manitoba 65
Nova Scotia 120
Saskatchewan 43
New Brunswick 79
Alberta (167)
Quebec 202
British Columbia (9)

Alberta has been drained economically by wealthy absentee owners since it
was first discovered as a region over 200 years ago. The wealth of oil
resources of Alberta are not much different from the potential wealth that
existed in other provinces. Saskatchewan sits on massive known oil reserves
today, but a predatory government keeps much development away. Years of
successive socialist governments have ruined the rest of the country
economically. The only thing different about Alberta is that the
population has had the political savvy to avoid the destructive and
unsustainable effects of socialism. If Alberta had had it's share of
socialist governments, it would be virtually assured that in spite of an oil
industry, we would surely be a have-not province today.

TSOA, still peddling horse pucks I see. Simple solutions by simple people
for non-problems. Do keep it up I need the exercise. DO I patronize you?
You bet! Do I try to insult you? Yessir! DO I try to piss in your
porridge? Absolutely as much as I can!

You really think Balkanizing Canada would be to everyone's advantage or are
you just concerned with what you see as the atrocities that the rest of
Canada has inflicted on AB? From the fatuous comments you make, never with
any substance or real issue I get the distinct understanding that you know
nothing or very little about the history of Canada, Alberta and
Confederation and the agendas that have driven the evolution of the
relationship of the provinces toward the federal government and each other
over the years. In simple terms you're ignorant.

You don't bother me I think you're funny. Your so easy to wind up like a
toy train that I feel guilty sometimes that I'm going to break your spring.
I can only hope you have good private health care.
You're howlings aren't even worth a cogent coherent answer. It's so much
easier and fun to just poke you verbally and watch where you pop out next.

Keep up the drivel I need the exercise.

see how we Canadians handled the last secessionist province, Quebec? Your

Alberta's natural resources belong to the people of Alberta, not the federal
government - read your constitution some day. Oh yeah, that's right. No
Ontarian bothers with that much.

We already have valuable and marketable commodities. We have no need for
'extortion' money - but you can give it to the other 8 states.

Who can forget the sight of Canadian tanks rolling through the streets of
Quebec, sent on the orders of a madman defending corporate profits and
federal rule? It was like Czechoslovakia in 1968, when the Soviet Union
crushed a rebellion. That will not happen in Alberta. We will stop your
advancing armies and put your "soldiers" on trial as criminals.

This is why the military must be disbanded - to spare the needless bloodshed
that always follows armies. We won't have our kids murdered by your
"soldiers" like that poor Somali.

Peter Worthington's great article in the Friday Toronto Sun is most
illuminating. He says that the JTF-2, the unnecessarily super-secret
assassination squad (might as well rename it the Deadly Viper Assassination
Squad...yes I saw Kill Bill), exists to provide bodyguard for Chretien when
he visits dangerous environments like Baghdad or Calgary.

Thank goodness the Airborne Murderers' Regiment is history. They'd clear
out Alberta towns like the SS in Russia.

not too long ago.
That's arrogance and snobbery found only in rich Ontarians. Can you
understand that not everyone likes the way you abuse power?

secession and American ass-kissing.
Why did you put that in quotes?

American pals)? How about you take a lesson from Canadian history and
see how we Canadians handled the last secessionist province, Quebec?

premier is still waiting for compensation for his one mad cow, anyway....
not likely your province is going anywhere until you get your extortion
money. Which, by the looks of it, you're not getting.

I'm sure the commanders of the Black Helicopters know of your evil plan to
start the Alberta Coast Guard. They might come for you at night.

Unfortunately, Alberta is still forced to serve that crazy place called
Canada.

Then why are Albertans constantly attacked in the media for rocking the
boat?
(K): Because they've become the whiners that Quebec separatists were
not too long ago.
Quebec separatists are still extorting money out of the Federal Government, much
of it in turn extorted out of Alberta. It's still a really lucrative process for
them, so why do you think Alberta shouldn't try the same proven approach?

We've been bribing those ingrates for decades. Has it brought US any return?
None that is noticeable.

We have a 100 billion in credit from the feds
Mike remember.
With Mcgoonty now in Ontario, Alberta is now
the economic backbone of Canada.
(K): Alberta can't even export beef to the U.S. with bone in it.... never-
mind being the 'backbone of' anything.

And as long as you're getting transfer payments from Ottawa, and your
premier is begging for Ottawa's compensation for your mad-cow fiasco with
your south-of-the-border friends, you're on the RECEIVING end of good
graces from Canadians, not the other way around. Better start practicing
humility, Britton..... Iraq is supplying the U.S. with oil now and your
American pals don't want your beef. What the hell else are you going to
support your arrogance with?

In good time that will change, no thanks to Canada's hostility.

Oh come now even Iraq couldn't supply all of America's needs - you know
that.

Like Ontario, we have a ready market for our goods; but unlike them, we like
our neighbors.

Since when have you Canadians been nice to anyone? You don't like people -
just money.

And we can shovel snow without army help.

She's correct right one, you little virgins are going to be kept on ice
until the going gets tough and then Uncle Sam is just gonna drop his pants
and come over the border and do you over like a twenty dollar hooker in a
football team locker room at half time He's just gonna pump you dry and
when he leaves he won't even kiss you goodbye.

Something to look forward too eh?
