I particularly enjoyed the comment, BTL, saying:

It's the only programme I know where you get a couple of elderly but
ruthless alpha male business types duelling over the sexual favours of a
septuagenarian flibbertigibbet. What more do you want! (Ian and Adam are

Someone - I think it might have been the Barron (sp?) Knights - did a
send up of "Coward of the County", called IIRR "Chicken of the County",
which did indeed include that mondegreen. (I think Terry Wogan - played
it a lot.)

I've long thought - though too late now, as LPs are passé - that it
would make an interesting album, to collect together originals on one
side, and on the other, either parodies, or (where the original is an
instrumental-only) where people have put (usually comic) words to them.
For the latter category:

Mozart's Horn Concerto Ill Wind (Flanders & Swann)
Peer Gynt Suite (Grieg) Mrs. Peer Gynt (Flotsam&Jetsam)
In Party Mood (Housewives' Choice) In Party Mood (Julie Covington)
The Minute Waltz (Chopin) The Minute Waltz (R. Stilgoe)
The Minute Waltz (B. Streisand)

(My criterion for these is that, if you ever hear the instrumental, you
hear the words of the latter in your head. I'm sure there are plenty
I've missed.)

(The parody one would be almost entirely Barron Knights, with one - Tell
Me More from Grease - by the Kings Singers.)

How could I forget that one! (I'm even hearing it now _without_ a prompt
of hearing the music. I was impressed to see and hear Daniel Radcliffe -
I think it was he - had learnt it, and performed it on some chat show,
although the presenters thereof were a bit nonplussed.)

There are also ones where the original composer later added words -
Elgar to PCM1, Holst to (I think) Saturn.

And of course, there are several other classical works that many people
_only_ know as the version someone has put words to - Saint-Saens organ
symphony, better known as "If I had words", and most excruciatingly
performed to a pig, and Mozart 21 as the basis for Song Sung Blue. But
these aren't ones where I hear the words in my head when I hear the
tune.

when the film about Joseph Locke came out, despite most of the
purchasers not having anything to play it on), or people who buy radios
styled like those of the fifties or sixties.

I think the Vinyl-in-Tescos is a fad: looking at the albums on offer,
I'd say more than half - possibly a lot more, but I'm not that
knowledgeable - are rereleases of "classic" albums: I don't think much
new material (rap, and whatever the other new flavours are) is coming
out on Vinyl.

And also, there are a lot of cheap record-players appearing; the
mechanics are clearly more concentrating on robustness than sound
quality. Since one of the arguments in favour of vinyl (which I've never
accepted, of course) is supposed to be something to do with sound
quality, ...
