Not just slow in my case - but non existent for the past few days on the

I hope you soon recover from your illness. Spring will soon be here :<)

Spring has hit Co Armagh already, the tits are collecting nesting
stuff, and the song birds are making a racket and courting. This is
the tough time for the birds, the food stores are gone and the new
source of food is only just beginning.

Birds always seem to manage to get food somewhere and start new generations.

I've never been to Ireland. Where is Co Armagh? My grandfather (mother's
father) was born in Ballymena, N. Ireland and moved to Scotland as a young
man and married my Scottish grandmother. I never knew him as he died before
I was born. He was our only relative not born in Scotland. My mother and
father's side were Scottish and went back many generations to the 1700's and
probably beyond. My father was born in Argyll. I did some genealogy a while
ago to see how far back my Irish grandfather's ancestry went in Ireland, and
found out the name of his mother and father, both born in Ballymena but
that's as far as I got.

In Toronto, spring won't be here for a while. Feb. is always a cold month
but this year, its been freezing every day and only one more day to go
before Feb. ends. Maybe it will be spring after that. In the summer here,
its very hot, so I don't mind the winter though it gets tedious. Not a lot
of snow so far, but extremely cold winds.

Armagh is a border county (uk side), the orange county, the orchard of
Ireland. It is where the orange order was formed, and for good measure
orange is also the county colour for gaelic games and other not so uk
activities.
Ballymena is the big Presbyterian stronghold, they speak with a kind
of Scottish accent. Anywhere in the north east of Ireland is just like
Scotland.

I always remember February being cold and horrible, but spring is
arriving earlier, and it only takes a bit of sunshine to get the
insects and birds going, and the wives with their grand plans for the
garden that they expect the cripple to accomplish ;) As a new over 50

I can believe that. Many people from North east Ireland came from Scotland
during the Highland Clearances according to history. I suspect the ancestors
of my Irish grandfather could have migrated to N. Ireland from Scotland a
long time ago and still be in Ireland. My grandfathers last name was quite a
common Scottish name and his mother's name is not that common in Scotland
but originally said to come from Strathclyde,Glasgow and Renfrewshire areas

haha.Surely you are not a cripple. If you are just 50 you should still be in
good shape to get your garden planted with spring flowers and after that,
plant summer flowers.
We are supposed to be getting better weather next week.Hopefully we will get

I am trying to guess what diy means. Discount something? We don't usually
get discounts here till we are 60 at the earliest, usually 65.

Later on, the penny dropped. It's not a commonly used short form where I
live. At least not by people I know. So I didn't think of it at the time. I
thought it was some secret code Max uses :>)

I'm a cripple, heavy engineering and motorcycles and no sense for a
long time made sure of that I got plenty of knocks and broken
things. My back and hips are on the way out.
Funny enough just last year I had an accident where I was briefly
exposed to some nasty chemicals in unmarked bottles and one got broke.
I wasn't too worried because I felt pretty fine, but the stuff burnt
my mouth and that was a big red flag.
Doc sat me down and told me this type of exposure usually ends badly
no matter how you feel now, he said within two or three weeks I could
be toast, dead and buried. I'm still kicking, I was frightened for a
bit, but I'm fine now. Never went for a follow up, never told my
family - I reckoned I was gonna have to but I kept on living.

If anything the whole scare has made me more active.

I just don't do doctors, the only reason I went to the hospital when
the accident happened was because the guy who was with me wanted to
get checked out and I sort of got dragged along.
No point in asking for a weather forecast when you can look outside
and see for yourself.

Some of the technical groups are still busy, like the MSoft operating

The ones catering to cat lovers are much reduced because of Facekook,
I guess.

Do you go to the cat group on Facebook? I never seem to have time for
Facebook. When I go on newsgroups,
I check to see any posts, then might answer, or not, and I go on to other
interests on the Internet. I am just not that interested in it right now.

I've been busy sorting out other newsgroups.
Do you still go on some newsgroups on a regular basis? I still go on a few.
they are not busy like they used to be, but some old regulars post.
Some of the technical groups are still busy, like the MSoft operating
system ones.

I wanted to see if this got posted. I haven't seen any posts on any of the
newsgroups I usually check for the last 3 days.
Is this the end?
I still drop in from time to time but I rarely follow the threads any more.

Its a shame Usenet newsgroups seem to have declined - it was one of the last vestiges of free speech.

I completely agree Adam. I really don't know why it declined. I still go on
a few newsgroups that Ive been on for many years, and some of the same
people that went there years ago, still post there, but not nearly as
active. I can only guess that most people who used to post on newsgroups got
tired of newsgroups and wanted a change and they went to Facebook or Twitter
and like it there. Each to his own I guess.

Newsgroups largely declined because most ISPs stopped carrying them.
The other driver of the decline was that too many brainless trolls and
egomaniacs started infesting them. A lot of us got bored with it when
that happened. I dropped off for half a dozen years or so, but some
folks just never came back.

But its been quite a few years since most ISP's stopped carrying newsgroups.
But soon after they stopped, most people who liked certain newsgroups found
free news servers. Since my ISP stopped providing newsgroups years ago now,
Ive used Aioe for my news server and also Ive used Eternal-September both
good and free. Google was free but I never used it for newsgroups. Google
groups used to be not bad years ago, but I havent been on them for years.
I didn't think it was too bad for trolls on scs but it had its share, but
there are groups a lot worse for trolls. You've been posting here quite
regularly for a lot of years now. Its not that long since a lot of people
from here went to Facebook and Twitter and maybe just wanted something new -
a change and liked it there.

AOL opened up access to it in 1993. That led to an influx of users
who had no clue about 'proper' behaviour on Usenet (known as 'Eternal
September') and was the beginning of the end. It took a long time to
die, but we could all see it coming. Prior to 1993 Usenet was largely
made up of academics, scientists, engineers, and university students.
Every September at the start of a new school year there was an influx
of Usenet users who had no clue about proper behaviour. Once AOL
opened access, September never went away.

Not THAT sort of pics and vids!! If you are describing something then a pic is worth a thousand words. Scientific things are better on FB. I know some old fuddy duddy won't agree. Politics is not so good on FB since you are limited - your post may end up front page of the Daily Wank.

In my case, my ISP dropped newsgroups about 5 years ago and I wouldnt use
Google either. But there were other good alternatives at the time after my
ISP dropped newsgroups.. I've been using Aioe for years for newsgroups. Its
free and reliable. I also sometimes use eternal-september.org. who offer
newsgroups. It's also free and reliable. I just figured maybe people wanted
a change and went to Facebook.

He seems to like Facebook. I used to go on Facebook for a while a few years
ago, but I do a lot of searches when I go on the Internet and was posting on
a few newsgroups at the time and I am not that interested in Social Media.
Maybe I will check it out again sometime but I have other things on my mind
right now.

Search Facebook for soc.culture.scottish. Most of the old die-hards are

He seems to like Facebook. I used to go on Facebook for a while a few
years ago, but I do a lot of searches when I go on the Internet and
was posting on a few newsgroups at the time and I am not that
interested in Social Media. Maybe I will check it out again sometime
but I have other things on my mind right now.
Search Facebook for soc.culture.scottish. Most of the old die-hards are
there. It offers things Usenet couldn't, like imbedded pictures and video..
I liked Usenet for conversation about mutual interests. It depends on your
interests on the Internet I suppose.

Usenet still works better than things like Facebook or BBSs for
serious discussions, as they tend to peter out fairly quickly because
of things like FB deciding what you really want to see rather than
letting you decide.

Usenet also made the right choice on 'killfiles'; "I don't want to
read what that person says" rather than "I want to hide everything I
say from that person". The latter is the juvenile approach.

Probably true.

You think thats the best way to handle "killfiles"?

My personal opinion, yes. The Usenet policy, which I prefer, amounts
to "I think you're an idiot and have no interest in what you say" and
is just an automated form of just skipping an article. The 'social
media' way amounts to "I want to behave like an idiot toward you and
want to hide what I say from you" and is merely a way to implement
intellectual cowardice.

Facebook doesn't decide that, you do. I've been on Facebook political
pages where extremely serious and lengthy political debate has gone on.
You decide when you want to stop. The notifications page lets you know
if there is further activity on a thread you are following. It also
keeps things concise, rather than having to wade through 500 lines of
redundant included text that people are too lazy to remove from a post,
are are simply trying to drive their opponent out by overwhelming them
with huge posts containing a 2 line reply on Usenet.

You can block senders very easily on Facebook, far better than on Usenet
where killfiles will not remove any followup that contains the text from
the person you are trying to block and don't want to read. Facebook
will, as there is no 'included text'.

Except Facebook DOES decide that. Someone replies to something I
posted. But I can't find my original post to look at the replies to
it. What do you suggest?

Unless someone includes it.

Use the Search box, top right. Same applies to Usenet. Original post is
marked as read then, if it's a long thread, you have to wade through them
all to find the original post again but, depending on the newsreader, you
may not have a search box. If you're using Google for Usenet,, good luck
with that one.

The problem is that if Facebook has decided that your post is old
enough to 'scroll off' you have to pick "Show More Replies" a few
dozen times to try to find it. On controversial issues, it takes
about 10 minutes for your post to be too old to show.

That is a disgustingly stupid design.

As is Goggle Gropes as a Usenet Reader.
