Discussion:
Stopping the massive headers in v7.1

I installed Eudora 7.1 on my laptop. No matter what Ido, I can't seem
to stop it from showing massive headers on incoming mail. I've tried
putting X- commands into TabooHeaders in eudora.ini, and that hasn't
worked.

I don't have this problem with v6.2 on my desktop. Any suggestions?

Thanks.,

Do you have the "blah, blah, blah" headers turned on?

From the Help Menu: "BLAH, BLAH, BLAH Icon: Click this button
to expand and display all message headers for this message."

If you're talking about the wee-bit fewer headers, but still
FAR too many, I can't help you and will eagerly await the response of
the experts here.

Do a web search for 'eudora tabooheaders'. This should get you started:

Hi, Joe,

Thanks for the link, but it didn't help. :(

Below is an example of the headers on an incoming e-mail, and I
have blah,blah,blah turned off.

If there is a way to turn all of that off, or at least
everything not specifically showing to/from/subject/date, I'd be
eternally grateful! I am running both Eudora 7.1.0.9 (shaddup John
Meyers <G>) and Eudora 4.2, and these overblown headers appear in both
versions.

Out of curiosity (with Eudora shutdown), exactly how does the
content of the message appear if you open the mailbox (MBX file) in
notepad/wordpad/other-text-editor.

In standard RFC821/822 (and newer versions) email, the END of the
headers is defined by a blank line. Given that the first line you showed
is something inserted by a SPAM checker I have a suspicion that the
checker is adding a blank line and turning all subsequent headers into
"body"...

In the MBX file you should find something like:

What are considered headers will be everything between the "From

considered "body" and no option will filter anything in that range.

Heck -- enable the BLAH/BLAH/BLAH icon and see if you get other
headers above that SPAM checker header, and if there is a blank space
between them.

TabooHeaders is a comma separated list of headers that will not show
when ShowAllHeaders is turned off. The easiest way to implement this
is with an Option:

<X-Eudora-Option:TabooHeaders=>

Copy the link and paste it in the body of a new message in Eudora.
Press the enter key once if the link doesn't appear in blue. Then hold
down the alt key while clicking the link. A "Change Option" window
will appear. In the "New Value" field type the headers you don't want
to see. If you just type the first letter of a header, then all
headers starting with that letter will be tabooed. You may want to
type a,b,c, etc ...... z, and omit d for Date, f for From, s for
Subject, t for To, and so forth

Using Content Concentrator you can achieve about the same results.

Just in case anyone still reads this group...

I had the identical header issue turn up on the old XP (yeah, that's right) laptop again. If I hadn't done a search and come up with these posts from 6 to 8 years ago I'd still be wondering where and what.

Thing is, for the life of me I could not find eudora.ini! deudora, yeah, but not .ini. Took me half an hour of searching to figure out where it was and that it wasn't being called that! The old Help file reminded me that .ini is kept with the Mail folders. I was looking elsewhere. Turns out the address for it was C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Qualcomm\Eudora. Sheesh.

Since nothing was labeled .ini, I looked at the "Type" column and went with the one calling itself "Configuration Settings." Bingo.

Since any version of 6.2 is long gone on my machines, thank goodness I posted the Taboo Headers info back in 2012. I was able to copy it from here, paste it into [Settings], and everything was back to normal.

Needless to say, I have now created a shortcut on my desktop to that file. But yipes, what a hassle. And no, I have no idea how the Taboo Headers info I installed six years ago disappeared. But also needless to say, thanks to everyone who posted back then, even though at least one of them is no longer with us.

I really should bookmark this page. LOL!

You are either running from the admin login, or using a shortcut with
an explicit data path... And if the latter, and you do not have admin
privileges -- anything goes.

Otherwise, the eudora.ini should be found in the "data" path shown in
"help/about eudora".

The explanation given is very vague. Copy & paste in the body of an email BUT what in the name of cucumber seeds does one do after that??? Can someone please clarify because when forwarding an email, the headers are determined to remain in that forwarded email. :-)

Pretty much by definition "forward" includes the entire message and
headers. TabooHeaders only controls which headers are not SHOWN within
Agent itself -- it does not remove headers from messages.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Email_forwarding
"""
Manual client-based forwarding

An end-user can manually forward a message using an email client.
Forwarding inline quotes the message below the main text of the new
message, and usually preserves original attachments as well as a choice of
selected headers (e.g. the original From and Reply-To.) The recipient of a
message forwarded this way may still be able to reply to the original
message; the ability to do so depends on the presence of original headers
and may imply manually copying and pasting the relevant destination
addresses.

Forwarding as attachment prepares a MIME attachment (of type
message/rfc822) that contains the full original message, including all
headers and any attachment. Note that including all the headers discloses
much information about the message, such as the servers that transmitted it
and any client-tag added on the mailbox. The recipient of a message
forwarded this way may be able to open the attached message and reply to it
seamlessly.

This kind of forwarding actually constitutes a remailing from the points of
view of the envelope-sender and of the recipient(s). The message identity
also changes.
"""

I don't think I've ever seen a client program that implements "a choice
of selected headers". Pandora's inline Forward copies NO headers (making it
useless for reporting violations to ISPs and companies), the alternate is
"as attachment" which includes everything.

The above TabooHeaders link by Ajo has a "=" in it that shouldn't be
there.

Copy and paste the following "<X-Eudora-Option..." line into the body
of an email addressed to yourself. Send it to yourself. When you
receive it click on that line. Eudora should open the settings for
TabooHeaders. Accept the new values.

<X-Eudora-Option:TabooHeaders>a,co,date-w,de,di,dk,do,e,fc,fe,fu,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,sp,se,st,th,u,v,w,x,y,z
If you don't like the new values, then type in whatever you want.

Or, if it's easier or more understandable to you, just edit Eudora.ini
to add the values you want. Don't include colons.

For me, the above allows me to see
To: From: Date: Subject: bcc:
and so far hides everything else I don't want to see.
(bcc: only shows in sent mail)

If anything you don't want gets thru, you can add it to the list...
bearing in mind you only need to include the minimum number of first
letters from what you don't want so as not to conflict with the
headers you do want. Don't include colons in anything you add.

For example, I want "From" but I don't want whatever starts with fc,
fe, fu. (I long ago forgot what those were.) So I can't use just plain
"f" because it zaps them all... including "From:"

Likewise I want "Date:" so just plain "d" can't be used to kill other
things that start with "d" or else I wouldn't see "Date:"

Just plain "x" gets rid of a myriad of different headers that start
with "x".

Etc.

That's not true Jim. Open your eudora.ini and you will see that
the settings that you have altered have an "=" between the Option and
the Value.

Also, it's not necessary to send the message to yourself to make it
work. Just hold down the Alt key when you are clicking on the link.

BTW, I am using Agent (as you do) as a news reader and I don't even
have to copy the link and paste it into a new message in Eudora. I'm
just clicking it here in Agent and Eudora opens with the Change Option
window open. YMMV

Cheers,

Removing Massive Headers:
Using Eudora 7.1.0.9 with Windows XP worked well with minimized headers.
Transferring everything to a new PC with Windows 8.1 also worked OK, without an increase in the Headers. But when I upgraded to Windows 10, I had to reinstall the program because of multiple Eudora.ini files. It also required cleaning all Eudora mention from the Registry, using FIND: Qualcomm and Eudora.
After re-installation I had Massive Headers.

The way to remove some or all of the headers is to insert one line in {Settings]area of Eudora.ini:

1. The following does not work in Windows 10: X-Eudora-Option:ShowAllHeaders=0
2. The other solution, found elsewhere on the web work very well:
TabooHeaders=List,X,X-CAA-SPAM: 00000,X-Authority-Analysis: v=2.1 cv=O6fEx0JW c=1 sm=1 tr=0,X-Received:,X-Original-Authentication-Results:,X-Forwarded-To,X-Feedback-ID:,X-CMAE-Score:,
X-CMAE-Analysis:,Precedence:,References:,Unsubscribe:,
DKIM-Signature:,Authentication-Results:,Received:,Return-Path:

That line reduced my Header from more than >2 screens worth to just a few lines.

One can add any <X-title:> to the list. Do not add spaces to the listing, where all items are comma separated, as shown.
I printed out on typical massive header, copied all the items I wanted to remove and added them to the list.

Thanks.,

Hi,
I think the solution is in Eudora itself.

Open Eudora then go to "Tools" then "Options" and from Options select the third category from bottom and it is called "Content Concentrator".

Once you are there adjust the Single Messages Profile on the right hand side.

I tried the second one which is "Messages Window" and set it to compact.

The headers disappered but if you need to see the headers for some reason then click on BLAH BLAH.

Have a go yourself and good luck.

Faisal,

You are my hero. Thanks so much. Your solution was simple
and worked immediately.

Best regards,

You can use them together:
<X-Eudora-Option:TabooHeaders=> / TabooHeaders="a,co,date-w,de,di,dk,do,e,fc,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,se,st,th,u,v,w,x,y,z" - to suppress the display

Tools, Options, Content Concentrator Single Message Profile "None" - to use the above

But you can still use the Blah, Blah Button to display all the headers if you need to check and/or print them on a single message display window.

I love you! I just went in to the Content Concentrator and did what you said and voila! I now longer have those pesky brats. If it was a snake it would have bit me.

Eudora is still the best.

Try this...

TabooHeaders=a,co,date-w,de,di,dk,do,e,fc,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,se,st,th,u,v,w,x,y,z

I came across this page while seeking help on a different Eudora subject. In my case I don't mind all the extra header info right now as it may help me solve the attachments issue I'm having.

Not sure if this post belongs here, since I've read many accounts now of the same problem among users with various O/S's and e-mail clients.

In my case I'm using WinXP and Eudora e-mail client.

When I (and other victims) login to the ISP's mail server using a (FireFox) web browser the messages and attachments appear fine. When I forward (D/L to my client) some of those messages that I want to archive, the attachments become "broken links" with the famous "red X" in the box. I am able to click on the "broken link" however which takes me to the associated web host.

I've been using the same software for years, and never had this problem until I wiped the drive and re-installed everything about 18 months ago. At first I suspected I was missing a vital update from MS who at that point no longer supported XP. But then I started reading online messages left by various ppl who also suddenly had the same issues.

Looking a bit deeper, I noticed that the e-mails I D/L which do not have issues have different header info than the ones that do not display the attachments correctly.

If the header info does not contain "DKIM-Signature" then the attachments are displayed normally.

If the header info does included "DKIM-Signature" but not the reference to MIME, then the attachments are not displayed normally.

When the header shows "DKIM-Signature" and a reference to MIME then the message appears the same as when viewed on the ISP server.

For 18 months I've tried various fixes including Internet Option settings, Eudora settings, using Outlook instead of Eudora.... nada.

Have any of you folks experienced a similar issue?

Thanks,
Wolf

Use the TabooHeaders function. Setting it up to hide most headers is
really not much work at all. It is a list of text strings. If one of
them matches the beginning of a header, then that header is hidden by
default. So adding "x" to TabooHeaders hides all the x- headers (and any
other header that starts with "x""). You can use the link to change
TabooHeaders <X-Eudora-Option:TabooHeaders>. Try something like this
TabooHeaders=a,b,co,de,dk,dom,e,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,th,u,v,w,x,y,z,
adjusting as needed to show the headers you want to see.

Thibaud,

This information will be very useful later.... First I need to figure out why e-mails I D/L off the server don't display inline images, and give me boxes with a red X instead. When I view the same message on the ISP server, the message appears normal with all attached images displayed.

I suspect this is related to the DKIM-Signature used by some senders.

It's doubtful to me that I can affect which type of protocol or signature a sender is using, so I'm looking for information on how I can adjust settings or install required utilities allowing my e-mail client to correctly handle the downloaded messages.

Thanks,
Wolf

I've been adding to my list for a loooong time and the following works
nicely for me. Added a new one (fe) just the other day. Header name
started with "Feedback"

TabooHeaders=a,co,date-w,de,di,dk,do,e,fc,fe,fu,g,h,i,j,k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,sp,se,st,th,u,v,w,x,y,z
