Hope it's not like the one we got in Miami Beach. We got the bikes but
not the space to ride them. Well, it was kind of predictable --I
predicted it anyway. Just another PR campaign that works in a small
area no bigger than one square mile. New York is different though. It's
the Big Apple, the city that doesn't sleep, that one that bans
Styrofoam and frisks suspicious-looking people. A place that limits
campaign contributions to 250 bucks. The city that bans handguns and
the only one where people is still people. I mean you can still roam
free on foot without feeling like an idiot, people and drivers
ignoring you. Of course, then you must control homelessness so they
don't take you for just another bum. Now I've become just another guy
pulling a cart, suspiciously looking like a hobo.

But of course, my style and pride should be obvious. Or maybe it
isn't, in which case I should go to New York. Only European city in
America, where you don't need a car. Tough and proud.

Now let's tame the jungle.

OH, THERE ARE TOO MANY PEOPLE ON THE EARTH.  LIBERALS HAVE NO PLACE TO
RIDE THEIR BICYCLES.  KILL MORE BABIES!!!
Well, that's your answer to bringing more babies to die from pollution
and hunger: Bring even more kids! More, more!!!

Actually if they rode bikes instead of cars you could accommodate MORE
people, but I don't expect conservative Christians to make sense.

All the bikes will be stolen inside a week ...
Every pawn shop within 300 miles of NYC will be overflowing with
bicycles within a month.
Even in "bicycle haven" (the Netherlands) they steal bikes left and
right. One small city there installed chips inside the frame to catch
the thief and I don't know the end of the story...

Provide they are smart about it and, say, fine the pawn shop selling
one of those bikes, they'll be around for a long time.

Here in "bike hell" such bikes are stolen and ridden openly all over
the place with little police intervention. They also cut a bike in two
for the hell of it or to steel a wheel, but that's only circumstantial
evidence. It doesn't work because there's NO place to ride them.

This is a comment I posted to Yelp:

"Great concept, but NO place to ride them outside of South Beach.
That's one square mile, which one easily walk to get some exercise.
Perhaps it works for the lazy and the tourist, but not to get from one
end of the program (North Beach) to the other (South Beach). Riding on
road is a suicidal mission and riding on sidewalk becomes winding and
grinding. I stopped riding my own bikes for that very reason."

***

I also have an idea fashioned after New York's frisking policy:

I would stop suspicious looking bikes and verify its serial number.
It's very simple, right? Well, the revolution is about solutions.

Yep ... they'll be shipped out on trucks and sold/pawned

The left likes to waste money in beautifying cities and creating bike
programs while the right just launches war after war.

The key word is "waste," meaning it creates jobs and business
opportunities --and a lot of corruption.

The most "beautiful" city in the world is just a tomb if

The key word is "waste," meaning it creates jobs and business
opportunities --and a lot of corruption.
Profit-making jobs or "busy-work" jobs ? There's a
difference you know. The first one builds a future,
the latter one cannibalizes that future.
Well, I hope you included bullet trains among the projects that build
a future...
NYC is never going to be a "beautiful" city in any
sense I suspect you mean - mostly because it's
full of New Yorkers. People come there and
see the bustle, hear the noise, see the mess,
feel the buzz and say "Hey ! There's MONEY
to be made here !". That's what NYC is about.
That's what keeps NYC alive. That's NYCs soul.
Sorry, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but a city devoid of
people can not be beautiful. Then we can say our suburbs really suck,
except for the green they may have. It's like a cemetery. I don't know
if you heard of Coral Gables, but it's a very upscale city with plenty
of green. Plenty of green and yet everybody is indoors except for
Miracle Mile that has a Barnes & Nobles and some cafes. That's it.
Apparently you want to turn it into some kind of
art display with a few people puttering by on
their bicycles wearing sissy spandex garb on
their way to a wine tasting party or book event.
That ain't NYC. That's death. Oh, and I bet
you wanna PAY for this 'beauty' by overtaxing
"the rich" too. Well Bejing and Hong Kong
await their defections - the businesses, jobs
and profits they generate .....
I don't know why you pick on spandex. It's not the type of cyclist I
have in mind. I'm talking about people riding bikes in style. I think
you are talking about the cyclists you find on weekends but nothing
else. They probably go around to the launching place with the bike
strapped to the SUV.

I had the dream to launch my own stylish bike in Coral Gables but the
dream has been scrapped. Nobody around and I would feel like
DonQuixote myself. This is my type of bike:

Fighting the SUVs would be like fighting the windmills.

But maybe NYC is different. We hope so.
Chicago and New Orleans are probably the
most corrupt ... but NYC has always been in
the top five. New Yorkers are always looking
for an angle ... some way to twist the system
so money runs into their pocket. This isn't
gonna change unless you do manage to
murder the city. Then it'll just be a giant Taj,
but in dirty grey. Even the artsy-fartsies will
have to flee.
I'm afraid only liberals know how to make a city beautiful, with cafes
and bicycles, not the beautification going on around here, which is
only a facade for corruption.

Let's build bullet trains like
every other civilized nation out there.
Are you willing to build the _freestanding _dedicated_ and _specialized_
trackage_ they need.
You do know they can't run on standard issue freight line track, don't you?
You do know that's why the ACELA isn't as fast as a Euro or Jap bullet
train, don't you?
Or are you just a simpleton?
So let me make a balance of what the Conservative/Christians offer:

1- You offer NO liveable cities,

2- You offer NO bike facilities,

3- You offer NO modern train infrastructure,

Again, what is it that you offer?

Hey, I just know you are behind every other civilized nation. I'd let
the engineers figure out the tracks it needs and every other possible
option.
Well, we can get Japanese or German engineers since ours can't even
connect the bike lanes. Do you know what it takes to ride a bike?
Yes, it needs one continuous path or road. Not a sidewalk!
a moped would actually be ideal for a smallish coastal town like this is,
i think you should give more of your energy to popularizing mopeds if you
want to be taken more seriously.....they are fun and more suitable for
most transportation than cars, cars should be more for serious traveling
not the general outing, i agree that alternatives to cars are under used.
I do think the scooters/mopeds have a niche in transportation,
particularly in tropical weather. They are perhaps more convenient
than bicycles beyond, say, 10 miles. But with the bike you do get a
workout AND you are OFF THE GRID, meaning you don't need to be part of
the system. Why I do propose is that we have OPTIONS, including
walking. I'm currently walking but that's because it would be stupid
to use a bike for a mile. Everything has their own place in my Utopia.
i just don't think it's realistic to be over demanding or extreme to be a
real effective idealist. for instance vegetarians make themselves unheard
by focusing on an either-or option between vegetarianism and eating meat,
they could instead encourage a more conscious meat eating society that is
respectful of the life they consume and not unconscious and so gluttonous.
True. I could be using a bike, say, 50% of the time instead of relying
on the car 100%. Imagine people could do that across America.
to be honest your continuous bicycle enthusiasm confuses me. i suspect
you are a character of somebody else, 2 dimensional and simple to master
without much thinking. it is a good thing to promote and i am sure it is
helping your own karma lift by continuous dedication to something,
anything... but what do you honestly expect by repeating the same thing
in the same groups... is it to have a gimmick to help create a memory of
yourself or... an obsession...or has the fantasy of successful
"revolution" seriously mesmerized you into the visualization of your
ideal society and made more important matters mean less until the one
problem that you think of has become the only one exaggerated over time..?
sorry i have to ask, i seriously wonder if there is a good reason or not.
Well, my use of the "revolution" is just like the Christians using
"Armageddon." That will be the solution to all problems, right? ;)

Of course I know what it takes to ride a bike. I'm 60 and I rode my bike for
years and never had anybody honk at me, except once the cops on base were
annoyed that they could not keep up, so they honked.
You are a miserable excuse for a man if you demand your own lane amongst the
congestion. I have no pity for your plight at all.
Around here it's the tourists who often ride on the streets just
because they don't have a clue how dangerous that is. They are
"liberating" this town for us so to speak. Pity them if you will.

Traffic here is out of control. They speed well beyond the 30mph
posted speed. They blast at cyclists and pedestrians if they feel like
it. One section in the "beautiful" part of town posted a 20mph speed
limit AND speed bumps. The lions of the jungle want their part of town
nice and calmed. They can because it's a lawyers and doctors who live
there. We are in the monkey section and anything goes. There are three
hotels where people must dash across the street on a blind curve to
get the convenience store and they do nothing to provide a light or
something.

So save your prayers for all those people.

Hey, that's the government "for the people, by the people..."

Well, it was meant to be. Copying Rome wasn't such a great idea.
If you're ever at a loss as to WHY government is

the logic will become clear.
And, IMHO, a new automobile plant is more
"beautiful" than a cafe next to a goat-cheese

Well, it ain't happening in Detroit. If anything the automobile never
delivered the Utopia it promised. People are sitting in endless
traffic jams and raging. Insisting on cars means more traffic jams and
raging.

Maybe the era of the automobile is over and we should explore some
options. Just get on a bike and grab that bull by the horns. If
"Occupy" had done that maybe we would be free by now. ;)

I'm afraid only liberals know how to make a city beautiful, with cafes
and bicycles, not the beautification going on around here, which is
only a facade for corruption.
Kickbacks, profiteering and more kickbacks .....
Hey, that's the government "for the people, by the people..."
Well, it was meant to be. Copying Rome wasn't such a great idea.
If you're ever at a loss as to WHY government is
doing something, just FOLLOW THE MONEY and
   the logic will become clear.
And, IMHO, a new automobile plant is more
"beautiful" than a cafe next to a goat-cheese
   store ....
If
"Occupy" had done that maybe we would be free by now. ;)- Hide quoted text -

What will happen if people start leaving the suburbs and crowding NYC
even more? I just don't want to think about it.
But .............but, isn't that what most humble philosopher's do?
True, we could spread them out Upstate New York, but I promise you, it
ain't big lights or people.
It's better for people to stay where they are and start riding bikes.
Think of Key West, it's nice and fun.
I believe the key word was THINK, a humble philosopher should never say
they don't want to think about it, thinking is part of the job.
That's why the engineers who design our roads, bridges and sidewalks
are so stupid. I know a retired civil engineer who calls himself
"director of the universe" (he made a book by that name) and when I
suggest anything simple he would go into a rage. When I told him he
needed an antivirus to get online he "fired" me as his assistance
(styling himself after Donald Trump). Hey, there's a lot of thinking
that needs to go into preventing accidents and bike lanes are not even
connected, forcing cyclists to ride on sidewalks.

Typical lion vs. clever monkey.

Well, I got brown rice down to a science. Microwave on high for 8 min
then switch to 60% (switching is automatic when you press "cook") for
25 min. It comes out great. White rice is only 15 min shorter so it
doesn't pay.
Why would it cost more when brown rice is LESS processed. That's a
great mystery of the market, but it doesn't work for the people.
http://www.askmehelpdesk.com/other-food-drink/why-does-white-rice-cos...
It comes down to Economies of Scale, as one of the people said in the
comments section. They process so much white rice that the price per
bag ends up being a lot less than the price of the less popular brown
stuff, which also has the disadvantage of containing oils that can go
rancid on a grocery store shelf. The more the retailer buys, the less
the unit cost ends up being. It's why Wal Mart can sell a package of
hot dogs for $1.19 and make money, while the Sparky Mart down the road
has to sell the same package of hot dogs for $2.59 just to break even.
Buy a single 3 lb. bag of brown rice and you pay X per pound. Buy a
couple dozen boxcars full of it and you pay Y per pound. It's a great
deal if you are sure you can sell it before it starts smelling weird.
If more people ate brown rice, which still has to be handled,
processed to some degree and packaged, shipped, etc. just like the
white stuff, the price of it would most likely drop.
Right, but that's a shortcoming of the invisible hand. People are
eating white rice because it's cheaper and getting sick because of it.
You are positively amazing, your ignorance, that is.
There are some 3,335,672,000 people who live in Asia and nearly all of
them eat white rice, and amazingly they don't seem to be getting sick.
One of the major drawbacks to being a philosopher, even a humble one,
is that you really do need to know what you are talking about.
That they survive on white rice doesn't mean they wouldn't be
healthier from brown rice. They surely eat other stuff besides white
rice. Maybe vegetables and fish, and that's good.
I'd argue that a bowl of white rice is not healthier than some of that
sliced white bread we eat in the West --it got some 20 ingredients.
The Germans know better and they are also fitter and healthier. Of
course, they also have a place to ride bike and an extensive trail
network to go hiking.
That was pretty good for a "humble philosopher," right? That's because
I'm a humble follower of Socrates, who said "I only know I know
nothing." I think it means we can not trust the so called "experts." I
know a civil engineer who's an idiot --he won't listen to anything--
and the unconnected bike lanes are proof of his kind.
In other words we need to change everything.

OK, I knew Rush Limbaugh, the "de facto leader of the Republican
Party," would have something to say about bicycling:

In mid-February, in response to a proposed city ordinance in Madison
that would charge motorists who open vehicle doors unsafely a $100
fee, Limbaugh let listeners know he didn’t much care whether pesky
cyclists get doored. On his radio show, Limbaugh said:

"Frankly, if the door opens into a bicycle rider I won't care. I think
they ought to be off the streets and on the sidewalk. Don't
misunderstand here, you bike riders, do not misunderstand this, but I
mean if you're going to get in the street, get over there, get over as
far right in the lane as you can. You ought to see Saturday morning
where I live. It looks like a swarm of mosquitoes. It causes you to
take an alternate route. And so now poor bike riders, some old codger
opens the car door, bam! The bike rider does a head flip over the
door."

Well, he's not any stupider than the average engineer who paints a
bike lane next to the parking area. The solution is so simple though:
BICYCLISTS TAKE THE LANE AND FUCK THE WORLD.

But that's only my humble opinion.

Poets and philosophers don't need to worry about grammar.

Only kids do.
