What's unbelievable? He was fired for breaching patient confidentiality.

I don't know the Swedish law on whistle-blowing, but I suspect he could
with impunity have reported his general concerns about what he found.
Instead, he chose to report individual patients to immigration. Did he
really expect to get away with that?

So to you reporting illegal activity is itself illegal??

You are purely fucked up.

No, I didn't say that. Reporting confidential patient information to an
outside body without permission gets you sacked. Private Manning got
much worse for something similar.

Hellish! Let's hope elections in September will give them pause for
thought, but I won't hold my breath!

So, you are in favour of medical professionals disclosing your personal
details to all and sundry?

Sure if you are partaking in illegal activity.

What are you hiding you don't want known??

The UK medical professions have a legal duty to do so to the authorities.

You're being rather disingenuous saying "all and sundry".

Are you referring to section 29(3) of the DPA? It allows disclosure,
but does not make it mandatory.

True. :)

Nevertheless, the Swedish story stinks. The immigration official says
that they would like the information. The daft hygienist does not
discuss this with his manager but just provides the information. (It's
not information, anyway, just his opinion, and he's not even a dentist.)

Perhaps he was worried that the service he worked for would not want him
to disclose it, so he chose not to discuss it with them first? In which
case, it's hardly surprising that they sacked him.

I replied because you said "all and sundry". The hygienist informed the
authorities, not the public at large.

The issue here is that the "immigration official" told "all and sundry"
of his confidential source.

I assume that the immigrant gets accused of having lied about his age,
and the evidence has to be produced at that stage. Are you suggesting
that he shouldn't be given a chance to see the evidence?

BTW, even if the authorities simply require him to attend an independent
dental examination, it's not going to be hard for him to put two and two
together, is it?

And in Sweden?

His employer said he broke patient confidentiality.
