Killing Eve       [new]         (8 pm, BBC America)
The next series from Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge is very
different from her previous, critically acclaimed comedy. For one thing,
it's not a comedy, for the most part; it's a tense, twisted,
action-filled thriller pitting a normally desk-bound MI5 agent (Sandra
Oh, in her first regular role since leaving Grey's Anatomy), who is
bored with her job, against a female assassin (Jodie Comer, The White
Princess). The eight-episode series (which has already been renewed for
a 2nd season) is based on the books by Luke Jennings.
I intend to sample this.

One assumed 'fleabag' is an earlier show she created, and not a
descriptive term?

An earlier show she created and starred in...and a descriptive term for
the character. It is on AmazonPrime if you are looking to sample it.

I'm also intrigued. But I think I will wait for it to show up on one of
the streamers (helps with "binging"!), as I'm too busy with other stuff
right now to bother with a BBCA show.

And, again, people around here assume that all of us can watch TV 24/7.

Some of us are teaching 5 classes this semester. Right now, I'm not even streaming a 1-hour show off Netflix, and I probably won't start for another week or two.

I'm certainly not going to waste time recording something I'm not going to watch for ages...

Right now I'm recording several shows to watch with my mother when we
have time, and I'm just letting those pile up so that we can watch a
season straight through. These are generally 8-10 episode cable shows.
OTOH, most of the shows I record for myself I watch right away.

DVR for stuff I am certain to watch within a week...

I'm certainly not going to waste time recording something I'm not
going to watch for ages...
Right now I'm recording several shows to watch with my mother when we
have time, and I'm just letting those pile up so that we can watch a
season straight through. These are generally 8-10 episode cable shows.
OTOH, most of the shows I record for myself I watch right away.
--Robin
I'm up to 395 episodes of CASH CAB.  The ones yet to be recorded
suddenly have descriptions.
Yeah, see, I refuse to do that!  ;p
On my end, I'd rather wait for marginal shows like "Killing Eve" or
"Mary Kills People" to show up on a streamer where I can then binge them
at my leisure on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I'd rather reserve the DVR
for stuff I am certain to watch within a week...
You have no tine for TV and yet you can fill your DVR with stuff you
intend to watch within the week?
He should be able to tell his DVR to delete CASH CAB within X amount of
time so he always has only the fresher ones.
If he only puts stuff on the DVR that he intends to watch within the
week AND he has no time to watch TV this week, then shouldn't he delete
all his recordings?

A friend of mine's wife controlled their VCR, and would never preset it,
'cause she wanted to make sure they were showing the right thing, to
which ends she also wouldn't hit 'record' until, while watching it live,
she confirmed to her satisfaction that it was the show she wanted to
record. So none of their recordings *ever* had the beginning of
anything.

For a while, Time Warner seemed to have tech that would "back-fill" (to the beginning!) recordings that were started late.

Unfortunately, they seemed to have dropped that over the last couple of years... :/

We have that tech but it only goes back as far as to when the DVR was
tuned to the current channel and powered on. So if you're, say,
watching a recording, and it ends, and the live show comes on in
progress, and you hit record, it will back-fill up to an hours worth.
But the buffer empties any time you change the channel or cycle the
power.

That's not the way it works! If the channel she wished to record from is
tuned in, then the cached portion of the program can be saved. In HD, at
least 15 minutes is cached, back to the beginning of the start time in
the program guide or at the point at which the channel was tuned in.

The Comcast DVR is difficult about some of these things. It doesn't
allow pre-set recordings at the last moment, especially if it's not set
up more than a minute before it must change channels. If it's too close
to the start of the program, then yeah, I'll tune in the channel first,
then hit record, but that saves the cached portion of the program.

I intend to sample this.
I'm also intrigued. But I think I will wait for it to show up on one of
the streamers (helps with "binging"!), as I'm too busy with other stuff
right now to bother with a BBCA show.
If only you had some sort of recording device you could store the 8
episodes with.
And, again, people around here assume that all of us can watch TV 24/7.
Some of us are teaching 5 classes this semester. Right now, I'm not even
streaming a 1-hour show off Netflix, and I probably won't start for
another week or two.
I'm certainly not going to waste time recording something I'm not going
to watch for ages...
Yeah, see, I refuse to do that!  ;p
On my end, I'd rather wait for marginal shows like "Killing Eve" or
"Mary Kills People" to show up on a streamer where I can then binge
them at my leisure on a lazy Saturday afternoon. I'd rather reserve the
DVR for stuff I am certain to watch within a week...
You have no tine for TV and yet you can fill your DVR with stuff you
intend to watch within the week?
You're being deliberately obtuse, Obveeus. I'm not going to bother with
you when you're being stubbornly thick...

You are the one who set all these strange rules. Most people would do
the opposite and figure out that if they were busy right now that it
would be the perfect time to DVR a show like KILLING EVE so that they
could watch all 8 episodes this summer when they are not busy.

Unforgotten [new to US] (9 to 10:30 pm, PBS)
British crime series about a pair of detectives (Nicola Walker, Sanjeev
Bhaskar) who attempt to solve cold cases from ITV. Series one and two (from
2015 and 2017) will air back-to-back. ITV has ordered series three, which is
currently filming, while according to Deadline in October 2017 ABC ordered a
US remake tentatively titled Suspects. ITV broadcast each series as six
hour-long episodes; these are being shown by PBS as three 90-minutes episodes
(reflecting the removal of ITV's commercial time), so the two series will be
broadcast over six weeks.

Unforgotten       [new to US]          (9 to 10:30 pm, PBS)
British crime series about a pair of detectives (Nicola Walker,
Sanjeev Bhaskar) who attempt to solve cold cases from ITV. Series one
and two (from 2015 and 2017) will air back-to-back. ITV has ordered
series three, which is currently filming, while according to Deadline
in October 2017 ABC ordered a US remake tentatively titled Suspects.
ITV broadcast each series as six hour-long episodes; these are being
shown by PBS as three 90-minutes episodes (reflecting the removal of
ITV's commercial time), so the two series will be broadcast over six
weeks.

like that they're short seasons.

I saw a smart one in River and MI-5. Didn't watch Last Tango, but
Collateral is on my list. She's in a lot of British crime dramas. She's

I agree she is good. Also, in COLLATERAL, it isn't that she is stupid,
but rather than lets her heart make the decisions.

I didn't see Collateral. I did watch Last Tango and though her character
is not very bright, she's a good actress. I also saw the one where she
plays the dead partner.

God Code (documentary) (9-11 pm, History Channel)
Behind locked doors in St. Petersburg, Russia is the Leningrad Codex,
the world’s oldest complete text of the Hebrew Bible. Because of its
ancient origins, it is a purer version of the Biblecontaining words and
characters lost in later translations. Timothy Smith, an antiquities
expert, believes he’s found an intricate code hidden within its text,
one that may not show up in later translations. This two-hour special
takes viewers on a journey across the globe to find out if the hidden
code is real. If it is, could this be the actual word of God? A code
written into his own divine work. A master plan for history? The code is
said to point to a diverse variety of historical events from the rise of
Hitler to the threat of North Korea and it may even point to the
location of one of the greatest treasures of all, the lost Arc of the
Covenant.
Wasn't this gawddamn nonsense debunked YEARS ago?
