omni turn not how good is it
,for the moey i beleive you cant beat the gt 75,any one who needs more or is
used to a high dollar machine needs to stick to
what he is used to, i use mine to replace small work done on a 30Hp turret
lathe with 25" swing, i have no complaints, every machine breaks down now and
then and anybody who doesn't expect that need not be in the business(narrow
mind that kind of thing).small story follows to elaborate on point. I am
friendly with local haas dealer, i have one of their older hl4 lathes. they
used to use me as a working showroom, one time they brought in a guy who
seemed to know his stuff ,except every sentence ended in, my mazak did not
do this or that,or my mazak did this better, trying to help my dealer friend
out i bit my tongue and said nothing(he may have been correct after all),
after about half an hour of this narrow minded bs i had to have my say, i
pipied up "you need to buy a mazak dude",suffice to say all machines have
their merits. i believe omni has bang for buck.anyone who cant see that,is
seeing trees not woods, this is my opinion only ,no need for a closs/banquer
deal here.

I will second that; I have two of them. Not the best, but good value
for
the money. They are now called CMS or something like that.

Next time buy a machine from Upgrade Technologies. they work very well
and have a ok service record.
If anyone is interested, a Swiss turn guy in Ventura, CA I know recently
bought an Upgrade Technology lathe for about $40k. He used it once, and
absolutely hates it. He's willing to let go for nothing if someone will
take over the payments, about a $10k loss to him.

check them out for yourself.
Like any machine, there will be those with the rare bad experience, but
they are the minority. There
are a LOT of Omniturns out there making parts, and with rare execptions,
most owners would buy
another one. There are a goodly number of shops with 8, 12, 16 or more
OmniTurns, running 24/7.
There are a good number of them that are over 8yrs old, still working just
as hard as the day they
were installed. Like any machine, they do need service occasionally and
the owner must give them
normal maintainence, but the uptime, repeatablility, speed, and cost make
them a darned fine
machine, and probably the best machine for the buck of its type.
I should know, I service them. And no, I do not get paid to say that.

It is not a bad machine when we are not having problems with it. The machine
runs all the time and does not appear to be built with such demands in mind. We
are on our third collet actuator and it was shipped to us put together wrong
and with parts missing. Anyone having any simular problems?

Are you saying your Omniturn "crashes"?

Then you have a problem. Id suggest several things.

1. Check your power. It should be regular with no glitches
2. Check to make sure your main power button (yellow ) is not going
bad.

3. Pull the MC-2 control card, clean the gold flat card edge
connectors with a pencil eraser, and reassemble the control properly
and make sure the card is horizontal in the housing..not at any sharp
angle..and then put the hold down bracket in properly.
If the machine is over 7 yrs old...you might have to pull the vertical
riser card that the MC2 plugs into..and treat the card edge connectors
the same way. Thats for machines that the control comes out the
front..its nothing more than a PC with the riser card mounted on it
like any other computer card.

If its newer..remove the upper deck..screws around the edges..and dont
miss the one under the wide ribbon cable at the back..just to the
lower right of the Connect Card..the green printed circuit board with
the relay and the long red connector that the control face is attached
to. Lift the entire top and pivot it to the left until you see the
card on the right side of the second level..and then simply lay it
down. Remove the retainer strip, remove the connectors leading to the
MC2 Card (2) and lift the card out of the control.

When you have the MC-2 Card out..hold it in both hands..like you were
reading a book..and with your thumbs..press the chips back down into
their sockets. After a number of years...particularly when running
bar feeder..they have a tendency to walk out of the sockets. If you
feel any crunch as you press them in..that could be your problem. It
simply means the chips have moved out of their sockets. They are
simply socketed and are easy to replace.

Clean, reseat the chips, install the retainer strip, reinstall the top
of the control..put all the screws back in and after making sure you
havent dropped any screws into the guts..put the face of the control
back into place. Then follow the instructions to tune the MC2, the
amps and so on. Its not rocket science.

After the machine has been reassembled Properly...turn it on and after
the prompt Turn on the Servos..hit the blue button, turn on the
servos..and then press Cntl + E keys

A new window opens up and tells you what is going on with your servos.
Enter 2 job speed (medium) and then jog the servos both in X and Z

If they each travel with the disply reading 100 (plus/minus) a couple
points..they are ok. If they are way off..you need service or someone
who knows how to use a DVM. Its not rocket science and the manual
tells you clearly and simply how to tune your servo amplifiers.

And also tune your MC2 card according to the complete instuctions in
the manual. It is different for each type of Servo Amplifier you
have onboard. The screen prompts are the same..but the adjustment
screws on each amp is different.

You will note the OmniTurn manual gives the end user FULL notes on how
to tune their own machine up properly. Not something most other
manufactures provide for free.

If you dont have a manual..download the (free) manual from the
documents section on the websites. Id suggest going to

Bought a used Upgrade technology GT27 gang tool lathe with Fagor controller in 2001. Still running parts today, bar feed and chucker work, mostly small gears and lead screw shafts. Been holding tenths tolerance all these years. Only issues have been changing drive belts a couple times and just last year lost the VFD and had it replaced.

Odd that JcBubba is not showing up on my computer...I wonder why he is
in the kill file?

Now did he buy a new Omniturn GT-75 or a used one from someone?

And what problems are they haveing? It should be noted that the
collet closer CANNOT be put together wrong.

What parts are missing?

If he bought a used machine...yeah..parts might be missing.

If he bought a new one..not a chance.

So what are the issues?

I have machines that were installed in 1995 in continious operation
since that year with no issues other than normal parts wear.

And they dont have Collet Actuators..they have Collet Closers. They
are a 5C machine with the ability to go slightly larger..to say...4"

Now some details please.

Hmmmm?
1. Did you purchase a NEW OmniTurn? Or was it used?

2. Are you filling the collet closer lubricator daily?

3. Is the lubricator dripping (1) drop ever 30-45 seconds when the
spindle is turning? To check, open the door or raise the access cover
and give it an M03S0. That will tell the control to start the
spindle, with a speed of Zero rpm. And get a flashlight and look. If
its not dropping a drop of oil in that time frame..it will indeed eat
the bearings in the Dunham collet closer. Remove one of the 1/8th
inch air lines coming from the splitter and feeding one half of the
collet closer body. If you arent seeing oil mist coming out..you have
a serious problem. You need to turn up the air pressure feeding the
lubricator. A large sticker inside the left front door should tell you
which one of the valves it is on the bottom of the Mac manifold. The
factory says 12 lbs..I run em at 16.

4. Is the collet closer running to under .0005 TIR? If its
wobbling..it will eat the seals AND the bearings. Some clods never
bother to align it after replacing the bearings..and it eats shit up
and ultimately they piss and moan when it swollows its ass. If a
competent OmniTurn tech replaced the "collet actuator" (something Ive
never heard of..not 3 freaking times)...it should be running fucking
hunky dory for 3-5 yrs, 2 shifts a day at 3000 RPM. At 4000 RPM..it
should run 2-3 yrs..2 shifts a day. As long as your air is dry, your
lube is running properly and the collet closer isnt flailing around
like a dervish.
Repairing the collet closer is a pair of 5210ZZ bearings (at any
bearing house) a set of seals (assuming you cooked the set) and about
an hour, start to finish. You will need a tenths DIAL TEST indicator.
NOT a indicator that is .001....NOT .0005....but .0001. Using a
standard indicator..is simply pissing down your leg and a waste of
perfectly good bearings.

5. If your air is wet, you are not filling the luber each shift, and
the collet closer bounces the machine around because its running
out...yeah...you will get reduced life out of em. Now IF NC
Electronics (the people who make the OmniTurns in Port Orford, Oregon)
sends em out and expects the end user to take care of them...do it
yourself...it aint happening unless the end use is taught how to do it
properly. The warranty used to cover parts AND repair..and if they
are sending you a box of replacement parts...bummer. If they are
sending out a tech who cant find his ass with either hand..even bigger
bummer.

Oh..did I mention..DRY Air!! If you can shower with the air hose at
the machine...you gonna have a farking problem. With any machine.
Omniturns arent any different. Feed it farking DRY AIR. No dryer on
your compressor..thats your problem dude..out of warranty. Put a
freaking dryer on your air feed. Not a filter..a farking electric
dryer. Make sure it puts out...DRY AIR!
