Too choked up for words. It looks like he shot himself. I can't say I
blame him; this is a dark time to be alive.

We should all honour the memory of this great man in our own way.

People who kill themselves do so because they are ill, not because of the
situation in the world. I am truly sorry for anyone who takes their own
life. It is not a selfish act as some people would have us believe. It is,
in the final analysis, a supreme act of self-preservation: when it is
impossible to be yourself in this world any more the only way to preserve
that self is to take it into the next world. It's a perfectly logical but
terrifying conclusion for any human to bring themselves to. There but for
the grace of God ...

Rest in peace, Hunter.

Absolutely. God forbid either of us have to someday stand *inside those
shoes*. The Duke is on a new level.

I actually know this to be a fact, as well.

Katherine's brother, Tracy Harley, was proclaimed by the coroner on Dec
27 1986 to have commited suicide by a shotgun blast to the chest.

Never mind that the big rifle was not logically able to be fired "solo"
to that position, Tracy being quite a small guy [thus one of his
monikers used in jest, "White Prince"] and never mind that he's run up
wuite a substantial drug bill over the holidays and before, and in fact
was the last person remaining at the party he'd thrown on Christmas
night in his loft above the Hardware store he ran in downtown
Shadowville.

Anyway, his death haunts the family to this day, and years later
Katherine went to *her* grave fighting deadly brain cancer morning her
brother, her lifelong protector, my fellow poet warrior, Tracy Harley
[1958-1986].

The suffering to friends and relatives is immense. But can you really expect
someone to stay in screaming pain every day just to avoid you having some
sadness?
'Tears or not it's too much to ask,' as the poet said.

Hunter was on the phone with wife when he pulled the trigger says
Alexander Cockburn:

"Thompson's Boston lawyer George Tobia Jr told the Globe the
67-year-old author sat in his kitchen Sunday afternoon in his home in
Woody Creek, Colo., stuck a .45-caliber handgun in his mouth, and
killed himself while his wife listened on the phone and his son and
daughter-in-law were in another room of his house. His wife had no idea
what had happened until she returned home later."

"Kerouac ended sadly at 47. As Abbey nastily put it, "Jack Kerouac,
like a sick refrigerator, worked too hard at keeping cool and died on
his mama's lap from alcohol and infantilism." Abbey himself passed
gloriously at 62, carried from the hospital by his pals to die at his
own pace without tubes dripping brief reprieves into his veins, then
buried in the desert without the sanction of the state.

Eloquent.

It hurts other people too much to kill oneself. It harms them,
especially children, who never recover when a parent commits suicide.
It's selfish and cowardly. Take yourself into the next life because you
can't be who you want to be in this one? Who can? Change. Change, grow,
live, learn. Choose life.

Suicide is not romantic. Suicide is raw and ugly. Goodbye, Hunter.

Yeah, the one actual suicide I was intimately connected to, the 1986
death of my brother-in-law Tracy Harley, haunts his family to this
day... in fact, my ex-wife Katherine grieved for her brother up until
her own death, last year.

There's more, though. Suicide sometimes has a contageous effect...
Tracy's father also went out this way when Tracy and his sisters were
small children.

My option? Considered the Jim Morrison route a few times: fake the
death, get the Hell out of Dodge, and take a shot at being reborn, with
principle significant others in on the joke, of course.

Exile in some faraway land is always a neat trick, if it can be pulled
off. In Hunter's case, though, sickness and a loss of his former Mojo
was just too much to bear, I feel.
