Discussion:
MSMQ issue: Unable to obtain Security Descriptor

Has anyone seen this message, or know what to do to fix
it? My MSMQ is running under the localsystem account as
it should be, but I'm not able to get any information out
of the properties. Any help would be much appreciated!
We're using W2K Server, SP4, if this helps.

Thank you!

What exactly do you do ? Which object do you refer to ? (a queue ? the msmq
object ?).
Did you install msmq in workgroup mode or domain mode ?

thanks, Doron

Doron,

Thanks for being of help man! The "Unable to obtain
Security Descriptor" error message is what I see when I
right-click on message queuing, the root item for MSMQ.
(send me an email and I'll send you a screenshot of the
issue.)

I'm pretty sure this is installed in domain mode. There
are references to it in active directory.

Thanks!
-Larry

Make sure you run as domain user, not local user. If domain user fails too,
please run 'tmq state -v -d' on that computer and post the output log. This
tool is available on http://support.microsoft.com/?id=887220
The log may reveal problems with your msmq installation.

Thanks, Doron

You took msmq offline. See the red circle on the msmq icon. Also note that
registry value ConnectionState is at 0.
With this state, msmq won't perform any queries on Active Directory, so you
cannot see the security setting of the msmq object.
To bring msmq online, right click on the msmq icon, tasks.

Thanks, Doron

You have many error events regarding msmq failing to initialize.
I'd suggest you enable error logging (Q15.1 in
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/d/3/bd3cbd9c-2fbe-4702-968e-123e370ff346/msmqfaqpub.doc),
restart the msmq service and post here the error log file.

Thanks, Doron

Doron,
Still getting the same error even after bringing it
online. Here's the new tmq report. Do you have any
other ideas? Am I missing a hotfix, or anything of the
sort? MSMQ has been processing messages just fine without
any issues while not being online. Is it absolutely
nessicary to be online to work? Thanks again for your
help!

Doron,

Thanks again for your help. This is in no way a full
log. I started the service but will not have any messages
in queue until morning. I'll give you a further update
once we get some live data to process.

Thank you!

Your computer is a domain controller, but it doesn't have a msmqSetting
object under the server object. (I see this from "mqdscore/siteinfo/80. HR:
c00e0001" line). This may happen if you install msmq while computer was in
workgroup, then dcpromo it to be a domain controller.
Can you please confirm this ? open the "sites and services" snapin, expand
the sites, site, servers, and see what objects you have under the server
object for "comdc". You should have at least two objects- ntds for Active
Directory and msmqSetting for msmq.

If msmqSetting is indeed missing then I'd suggest you uninstall msmq, then
re-install it.
Thanks, Doron

Doron,
Thanks again for your help. This is in no way a full
log. I started the service but will not have any messages
in queue until morning. I'll give you a further update
once we get some live data to process.
Thank you!

Okay. I can see where this may cause an issue, but it
also may work to my advantage.

We are planning on DCPromo'ing this server down to a
member server eventually, and re-doing it as a 2003 domain
controller.(introducing a new DC first, and then DCpromo
down comdc to bring it back up as a W2K3 Server) If we
happen to leave comdc as a member server, will it cause
issues with MSMQ if it was installed originally in a
workgroup mode?

As I've said before... currently, messages are queued, and
processing, even though the MSMQ is in offline mode. If
the only true fix is a re-install of the OS, then we will
most likely have to wait until we upgrade to W2K3.

Thanks again!

Okay. I can see where this may cause an issue, but it
also may work to my advantage.
We are planning on DCPromo'ing this server down to a
member server eventually, and re-doing it as a 2003
domain
controller.(introducing a new DC first, and then DCpromo
down comdc to bring it back up as a W2K3 Server) If we
happen to leave comdc as a member server, will it cause
issues with MSMQ if it was installed originally in a
workgroup mode?
As I've said before... currently, messages are queued,
and
processing, even though the MSMQ is in offline mode. If
the only true fix is a re-install of the OS, then we will
most likely have to wait until we upgrade to W2K3.
Thanks again!

-----Original Message-----
Your computer is a domain controller, but it doesn't
have
a msmqSetting
object under the server object. (I see this
c00e0001" line). This may happen if you install msmq
while computer was in
workgroup, then dcpromo it to be a domain controller.
Can you please confirm this ? open the "sites and
services" snapin, expand
the sites, site, servers, and see what objects you have
under the server
object for "comdc". You should have at least two objects-
ntds for Active
Directory and msmqSetting for msmq.
If msmqSetting is indeed missing then I'd suggest you
uninstall msmq, then
re-install it.
Thanks, Doron

Doron,
Thanks again for your help. This is in no way a full

once we get some live data to process.
Thank you!

Here's a portion of the latest dump file. It just seems
to keep repeating the same stuff over and over again.

Your computer is a domain controller, but it doesn't
have
a msmqSetting
object under the server object. (I see this
c00e0001" line). This may happen if you install msmq
while computer was in
workgroup, then dcpromo it to be a domain controller.
Can you please confirm this ? open the "sites and
services" snapin, expand
the sites, site, servers, and see what objects you have
under the server
object for "comdc". You should have at least two objects-
ntds for Active
Directory and msmqSetting for msmq.
If msmqSetting is indeed missing then I'd suggest you
uninstall msmq, then
re-install it.
Thanks, Doron

On both Win2000 and Win2003 a workgroup computer with msmq installed can
join a domain (as a member server) and msmq will join the domain too. That's
fine.

On Win2000, there may be a problem if you dcpromo the workgroup computer.
Then msmq may not create the msmqSetting object.

On Win2003, this scenario should be ok, as msmq itself doesn't need the
msmqSetting object. This object is created only if you install msmq with
routing enabled (which is not possible in workgroup) or if you install the
downlevel client support service (which is also not possible in workgroup).

Thanks, Doron
