"One of Britain’s wealthiest councils is to issue begging letters to its
richest residents asking them to pay a “guilt tax” to help the young,
lonely or homeless.

Westminster city council said it would be writing to 15,000 of its
wealthiest homeowners asking them to make a voluntary donation on top of
their council tax.

The initiative comes amid warnings that a crisis in local government
funding is likely to drive five councils into insolvency within the next
12 months, with 10 running out of money within two years."

Shocking!

I've never given handouts. When the #FAUX poverty stricken
knock at my door, I say, sure, I'll give you lunch, but do me a favour
and pick up the litter in the street while I get it. Which is met with
the inevitable instructions on where I should put the lunch.
The #REAL poverty stricken die at home, in silence, mere

+1 (that's from the Bouffant).

Pooh, when did Labour stop being Labour ? Was it before or
after Charles Lynton took office ?

I doubt that anyone will willing gave the council any money

when the could give the same amount to a charity and claim it against their
tax

Well have a look at :-
https://tradingeconomics.com/united-kingdom/housing-starts
expand the period to max.

Notice how starts fell in the late 1970's (during the Labour government).

It then recovered in the 1980's until MIRAS was restricted / abolished ~1987 and was stable at about 40k per month (350 - 400kpa) until 2007, when coincidentally Gordon Brown became prime minister.

Starts then dramatically collapsed by half to the lowest peace time level since records began [in 1923]. Starts increased again from 2010, when coincidentally Gordon Brown ceased to be prime minister, recovering to about 40k per month again. During the three years around three quarters of a million less houses were built than expected / usual - about the shortfall now.

So what factor do you think was the cause of the this fiasco. Hands up those who don't think this fiasco wasn't Gordon Brown and his government's fault...

Perhaps you can remind us how many years have lapsed since Broon'
government, and how many years Broon was PM?

Are you sort to blame it all on the sell off of council houses by
Thatcher too?

I agree with the sentiment of lack of house building, especially since
2005. But I wonder if you could ever admit this might have contributed
to Brexit?

"...MIRAS was restricted / abolished ~1987..."

1997.

It was done by Broon as one of his first acts as Chancellor. At the same
time, he abolished the married couples' tax allowance. The effect, no
matter how Broon-lovers like to try to paint it, was a double-whammy
increase in income tax for families with mortgages.

Nice.

That just is not, and cannot be, true.

Both those allowances were in existence when Labour won in 1997. But
they didn't last long under Labour.

During the coalition government, the Conservatives, as you may remember,
did start to make plans for marriage to be "recognised" within the tax
system.

Why would I have to be saying that?

Your post reads: "And retained the tax arrangement by the Condems and
Tories, so endorsed by your chums", which I am reading as though the
word "they" was inserted after the inital "And".

Labour clearly didn't retain the previous tax allowances. They abolished
them.

I doubt that the Treasury feels that these tax-relief measures can be
reinstated at present given the state's post-2008 indebtedness, but I
don't believe that MIRAS will ever be reinstated.

The Child Benefit business was a hopeless mistake that should never have
happened. I don't earn enough to have been affected by it but I still
recognise that CHB was a repl;acement for two things, a tax allowance
and a universal social security payment. Neither of them was
means-tested and there is no good reason why anyone should be denied CHB
on the basis of their income.

It's rather like clawing back Retirement Pension based on the level of
other income - ie, there's no justification for it.
