what were your first feeling including sight and sound when you got off
the plane or boat in vietnam?
in my case I saw what looked to be many cooking fires as we circled Bien
Hoa, followed by a Captain dressed in helmet, flak jacket, tee shirt and
un-bloused fatigues, directing us to closest bunker; those were not
cooking fires. Racing down the stairs to the tarmac, the warm wet air
of Vietnam as well as the smell (of which I would later come to
appreciate when other smells would waft thru my nostrils...no not the
chow line). later that evening the ride to Long Binh in the bus with
wire screen in the windows...in artillery fire all the FNG thought was
incoming :) all this before the sun came up
I'll never forget the guys going the other way yelling "Short!!!"
