Discussion:
Glitch on Netflix: an updated appraisal

I posted after watching the first episode of the six-episode first
season of Glitch, the latest entry in the "group of local people come
back from the dead" show, and was not impressed. It seemed clumsy and
superficial and paled so in comparison to Les Revenants (although, in
fairness, almost any show probably would).

Having completed viewing the six episodes, I am considerably more
positive about the show. While it lacks the mesmerizing atmosphere and
depth of the characters of Les Revenants, I was able to enjoy it on its
own merits, and I appreciated its specifically Australian take on the
genre. (I haven't watched many Australian shows.) It's not a large
investment in time, and the final episode introduced two unexplained
issues, one clearly supernatural and the other possibly so, that should
lead to a more complex season two.

It differs from the other shows in the genre in that there is only a
small group (seven people) who return, all from the same local
graveyard, so that there is greater focus on the individual returnees,
and very little on the reaction of others, only a few of whom find out
about the returnees, at least that we're shown. (Some reviews say that
six returned, but there was a seventh who died early to establish a
critical limitation on the returnees.)

Perhaps I missed it, but I didn't hear an explanation for the title
(i.e., the word used in dialog).

Ian and I recommend the classic SEA PATROL! I liked RESCUE SPECIAL OPS.
And of course for classic OZ TV, you can't do better than SKIPPY THE
BUSH KANGAROO. And for crime drama with grisly death, juicy nudity, and
actors you'll recognize from when they moved to American and lost their
accents, you just can't do better than UNDERBELLY.

If you like Orange is the New Black, you may very well like WENTWORTH.
It's set in a women's prison and follows both the prisoners and the
staff. It's something of a soap but not excessively so. You're unlikely
to recognize many people but the cast seems solid enough. There's lots
of intrigue by both the staff and the prisoners as each schemes to
better its position. I believe there have been five 12 episode seasons
so far with the fifth having aired recently.

It is very lame. Skip it and watch ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK instead.

Haven't watched Marcella, but loved both HBS (you and I have both
mentioned that) and River.

I'm not actively looking for more shows to watch, as I have so little
time as it is.

What I'd actually like to find are some good police dramas that aren't
risque, too complex, or boring, for my 90-year-old mother and I to watch
together. We have watched River, The Bletchley Circle, Shetland, Miss
Fisher's Murder Mysteries, both seasons of Missing, and Trapped. She
thought Top of the Lake, Happy Valley and Witnesses were boring, and
Bordertown and Case were too extreme for her. I've read reviews on
almost all of the police shows on Netflix and it's just so hard to
thread the needle for her. I'm not sure why I haven't considered
Marcella. Now we've just started Murder in Paradise, which is
reasonably-fun pablum and will keep her occupied for 40 episodes or so.
Netflix actually now has the rights to 19 seasons of Midsomer Murders,
but what I really like are the six-to-10 episode seasons that pack a
punch but come to a conclusion.

BTW, I see that, when Netflix loses the rights to a show (in this case,
Trapped), it disappears from your viewing history.

For myself, I have watched Hotel Beau Sejour, Travelers, Stranger
Things, season four of The Killing, and Glitch. I started watching
season four of Longmire but may not ever get to it.

Unfortunately Murder in Paradise goes south fast when the cast changes.
Ask Ian what happened with Silk Stalkings.

I thought Marcella was awful.

If you liked Miss Fisher, have you tried Murdoch Mysteries? It's in
much the same vein.

How about Blue Bloods?

Okay, searching for 'cops' brings up the category COP TV SHOWS And
there are a *lot* of them. Most of which I haven't seen. But
possibilities include

Blue Bloods
Hawai'i 5.1
CSI: Miami
Republic of Doyle (that's a fun one)
Murdoch Mysteries
Vexed
Poirot

Changing the search to "Police" yields
Longmire
NCIS
Bones
Okay, LEVERAGE is a caper show, usually pretty good, might be confusing.
But if she gets into it, there's a lot of 'em.
Father Brown
White Collar
Crossing Jordan
SNIFFER is kinda weird, but who knows

Our Australian friend David likes The Doctor Blake Mysteries. As with
Murdoch, it's a good fit for fans of Miss Fisher.

Hope that helps!

"White Collar" was one of those shows that I can't even "rate" with
Netflix's new system - it's not a "Thumbs up" because the later seasons
were so weak. I either need to be able to split it in half, so I could
rate "First half" as "Thumbs up", and "Second half" as "Thumbs down";
or I need to be able to give it a "number score" on a scale of 1-to-10
or something...

It's too bad that The Netflix won't let you rate TV series BY SEASON(!)...

Or the tech. I recommend the one with the gun that fires so many
bullets it disintegrates people completely.

Or the one where Horatio is framed, flies down to Rio, figures out who
framed him, gets his brother killed, murders the bad guy, and flies back

Yeah, but White Collar ... it's different, it's shot on location in NYC,
it has a lot of appealing people in it, and you don't care that much if
you fall asleep. :) The sad part is that the worst episodes are the
ones with Natalie Morales, who hates me because of Adan.

Cast #1 - Great!
Cast #2 - Bad! (in the case of SS: Awful!!)
In the case of MiP as well.

Cast #3 - Decent
Are you talking about DEATH IN PARADISE?
MURDER IN PARADISE only had 2 seasons.
Yes, we're talking about DEATH IN PARADISE (thanks)
Some might argue that DEATH IN PARADISE, like BUFFY TVS, only had two
seasons as well.
Or "NCIS"!... ;)
I thought you only acknowledged the back door pilot on JAG that they
claim didn't count so they could cheat Bellasario out of his fee.

No - on that score, I'm just furious that they memory-holed Robyn Lively, and never had her back on or even referred to her character again... >:/

Hell, they memory holed the events of YANKEE WHITE too.

Yep!
That's too bad that the cast of Death in Paradise changes so much.
Checking IMDb, I see that they're on to the third DI. The original one,
DI Richard Poole, is only there for the first two seasons and the first
episode of series three, then he is replaced by DI Humphrey Goodman, who
is later replaced by DI Jack Mooney this year in the middle of series
six. Maybe we'll watch the first two series and then look for something
else.

Yeah. Marshall just never gels. He comes across as weird, but not
pleasantly so. I thought he might have been a good Doctor Who for that
reason.

Mooney hasn't had much to do yet, but he's *way* better than Goodman.

Mild spoiler: If you like Poole, don't watch the first episode of
season 3. Just go on about your business as if nothing happened.

While it lacks the mesmerizing atmosphere and
depth of the characters of Les Revenants, I was able to enjoy it on its
own merits, and I appreciated its specifically Australian take on the
genre. (I haven't watched many Australian shows.)
Oh my...no!

Thanks, Rhino. Wentworth is actually one of the few Australian shows I
have heard of, although I haven't seen it. Is it broadcast in Canada?
It is very lame. Skip it and watch ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK instead.
BTW, have you watched HOTEL BEAU SEJOUR? MARCELLA? RIVER?
But if it comes back it will reappear in your list, confusing you
totally.

I thought Marcella was awful.
If you liked Miss Fisher, have you tried Murdoch Mysteries? It's in
much the same vein.
How about Blue Bloods?
Okay, searching for 'cops' brings up the category COP TV SHOWS And
there are a *lot* of them. Most of which I haven't seen. But
possibilities include
Blue Bloods
Hawai'i 5.1
CSI: Miami
Republic of Doyle (that's a fun one)
Murdoch Mysteries
Vexed
Poirot
Thanks, Ani. I hadn't heard of Republic of Doyle; that sounds like the
kind of show that mom might like. She likes the light dramas (think
Monk), or more serious fare that doesn't get into anything too violent,
sexual or kinky. Unfortunately, a lot of the (continental) European
shows are quite sexual, often into really kinky stuff.

I also have Murdock and Poirot on the "possibilities" list, but I'm
trying to find shows that won't take forever to get through. Vexed I've
looked at but I forget what I decided. According to Wiki, most reviewers
didn't like it.

Changing the search to "Police" yields
Longmire
NCIS
Bones
Okay, LEVERAGE is a caper show, usually pretty good, might be confusing.
But if she gets into it, there's a lot of 'em.
Father Brown
White Collar
Crossing Jordan
SNIFFER is kinda weird, but who knows
Our Australian friend David likes The Doctor Blake Mysteries. As with
Murdoch, it's a good fit for fans of Miss Fisher.
Hope that helps!
Doctor Blake and Father Brown are on my list of possibilities, although,
having watched Grantchester, I'm not sure we're interested in another
amateur pastor sleuth. I loved White Collar and Leverage, watched Bones
and Longmire.

Thanks again!

It's a lot of fun. There's a 'bar brawl' in nearly every episode of the
first season only one take place in prison, but it's like the old John

Thanks, Ani. I hadn't heard of Republic of Doyle; that sounds like the
kind of show that mom might like. She likes the light dramas (think
Monk), or more serious fare that doesn't get into anything too violent,
sexual or kinky. Unfortunately, a lot of the (continental) European
shows are quite sexual, often into really kinky stuff.
Doyle is shot on location in Newfoundland, with people and accents and
scenery you've never seen before. I quite like that. It also has a
crossover with MURDOCH MYSTERIES.
Thanks again. "People and accents and scenery you've never seen
before" is part of the reason I liked Glitch.
I've added RoD to my list of possibilities.

It's a lot of fun. There's a 'bar brawl' in nearly every episode of the
first season only one take place in prison, but it's like the old John
Wayne ones where everyone joins in and is good fun.
That does sound fun!

They take running a con to get their man to a new level. No gore, not
too many murders, it's a good show.

And I thank Anim for turning me on to it.

There's another one where they destroy some woman's car, so her
being a Sour Patch kid could explain her hatred of Anim's RV.
I don't hate it you know. I missed it when it drove off and left me behind.

I also have Murdock and Poirot on the "possibilities" list, but I'm
trying to find shows that won't take forever to get through. Vexed I've
looked at but I forget what I decided. According to Wiki, most reviewers
didn't like it.
VEXED is definitely light, bordering on corny at times. I watched both
seasons, which felt somewhat like different shows because they swapped
out the female lead.

Yes, although unlike Silk Stalking or Murder in Paradise, the
replacement wasn't horrendous.

Doctor Blake and Father Brown are on my list of possibilities, although,
having watched Grantchester, I'm not sure we're interested in another
amateur pastor sleuth. I loved White Collar and Leverage, watched Bones
and Longmire.
Goodness. Father Brown! It's in the category of it's so bad it's good.
Nearly nothing of G.K. Chesterton survives. They've changed the time
period as UK television productions are wont to do. There's some sort of
UK television presentation of the 1950s (that has nothing to do with
reality). No matter what time period the source material was set in,
it becomes the 1950s in adaptation. I have no clue how they determined
that UK television audiences won't accept any other period.

The supporting cast is good, especially Sorcha Cusack and Alex Price.
I really like Emer Kenny as Bunty, tall, lean, sexy, who replaced
Nancy Carroll.

Mark Williams' performance is, uh, well, I'm not sure what he's trying to do,
but it must be what the producers had in mind. It's deliberately unreal
and off putting.

The morality presented by the series is fascinating. Felonies are often
ignored in favor of pseudo Catholic theology (that may or may not have
anything to do with Chesterton's religious ideas), and sometimes, the
murderer does not face justice (unless you believe everyone goes to Hell).
The scripts will overlook kidnappings and assault and battery committing
by the "sympathetic" characters, but often, all the guest characters are
guilty of greater or lesser crimes.

Bizarrely, there has been the occassional episode in which the felony
isn't persued AND the felon has not accepted God (which is always Father
Brown's excuse for not turning in the felon), so the writers forget
what they're supposed to be doing anyway.

The police that Father Brown works with are, well, one character is worse
than the next.

Also, except in the pilot episode, nearly everybody is Catholic. Apparently
the counter-Reformation took hold in this oddball universe.

That's funny. And a great observation. So many of the period dramas from

It's fairly typical of the Agatha Christie adaptations. She could be quite
vague about eras in some stories, but the pre-war stories she wrote would
often be changed to the 1950s. In the recent Tommy and Tuppence series,
instead of aging the characters as Christie had, they just set two of the
novels in the 1950s. It didn't please a large enough audience, so it was
cancelled before the others were adapted.

Grantchester is set in the early 1950s, one of the few adaptations that
didn't change the time period.

Republic of Doyle (that's a fun one)
I've seen a few episodes of this. It's in foreign syndication on broadcast.
It's fun for the St. John's location shooting, a part of Canada that's
otherwise never seen on tv.

The acting leaves something to be desired, but the scripts make an effort
to do witty banter. They really don't take themselves seriously but they're
not entirely mugging for the camera.

While it lacks the mesmerizing atmosphere and
depth of the characters of Les Revenants, I was able to enjoy it on its
own merits, and I appreciated its specifically Australian take on the
genre. (I haven't watched many Australian shows.)

MARCELLA? RIVER?
Haven't watched Marcella, but loved both HBS (you and I have both
mentioned that) and River.
I thought you might have been the one promoting HOTEL BEAU SEJOUR, but
couldn't remember for sure and was too lazy to look it up.

Some other shows I enjoyed: PARANOID, THE BREAK, DICTE, SOUTHCLIFFE.

A couple I gave up on: THE FALL, THE SNIFFER, SPIRAL, HINTERLAND.

If you can break away a bit from standard crime procedural format to
simply shows about criminals: LILLYHAMMER, OZARK, PEAKY BLINDERS, FRONTIER.

...or break away to a new genre all together: RITA, MERLI, BORGIA.

...or some quirky film characters:
100 YEAR OLD MAN WHO CLIMBED OUT THE WINDOW AND DISAPPEARED.

BTW, I see that, when Netflix loses the rights to a show (in this case,
Trapped), it disappears from your viewing history.
It will reappear if/when the show becomes available again.

Southcliffe looks great, but I think my mom would have trouble following
the time jumps.

I read this review about The Break and scratched it as too raunchy for
my mother: "As Christie knew and exploited endlessly in her twee country
terrors, beneath every peaceful hamlet is the roiling mud of the human
soul. (OK: a lot of demented people doing sick shit.)"

And my note on Paranoid is that "reviews aren't great."

It's hard because my mother is very particular in what she likes
(mid-brow, not too complex, boring or sexual; in practice that works out
to Monk-like light dramas or foreign L&O with interesting characters),
and evaluations are all ultimately subjective.

DICTE was a decent show, though it does lean heavily on the lead female
(reporter) and/or the lead male (cop) being personally involved in
pretty much every case. Also, most of the series is taken up with each
case being 2 episodes long. The first 2 seasons were better than the third.

I don't think that it was raunchy, but it is dark, like many crime
procedurals. Definitely more the tone of HOTEL BEAU SEJOUR than CASTLE.

Some other shows I enjoyed: PARANOID, THE BREAK, DICTE, SOUTHCLIFFE.
Thanks, Obv! Dicte is only my list of possibilities; what did you think?
DICTE was a decent show, though it does lean heavily on the lead female
(reporter) and/or the lead male (cop) being personally involved in
pretty much every case. Also, most of the series is taken up with each
case being 2 episodes long. The first 2 seasons were better than the third.
I noticed that a lot of people didn't seem to like the third season too
much.

I read this review about The Break and scratched it as too raunchy for
my mother: "As Christie knew and exploited endlessly in her twee
country terrors, beneath every peaceful hamlet is the roiling mud of
the human soul. (OK: a lot of demented people doing sick shit.)"
I don't think that it was raunchy, but it is dark, like many crime
procedurals. Definitely more the tone of HOTEL BEAU SEJOUR than CASTLE.
OK, thanks.

For myself, I have watched Hotel Beau Sejour, Travelers, Stranger
Things, season four of The Killing, and Glitch. I started watching
season four of Longmire but may not ever get to it.
You need to give SENSE8 a try.
On my list for myself.
Yes...definitely not one to watch with mom.
:-)

I posted after watching the first episode of the six-episode first
season of Glitch, the latest entry in the "group of local people come
back from the dead" show, and was not impressed. It seemed clumsy and
superficial and paled so in comparison to Les Revenants (although, in
fairness, almost any show probably would).
Having completed viewing the six episodes, I am considerably more
positive about the show. While it lacks the mesmerizing atmosphere and
depth of the characters of Les Revenants, I was able to enjoy it on its
own merits, and I appreciated its specifically Australian take on the
genre. (I haven't watched many Australian shows.)
Oh my...no!

MARCELLA? RIVER?

Things, season four of The Killing, and Glitch. I started watching
season four of Longmire but may not ever get to it.

Thanks, Suzeeq. I'll add these to my list of possibilities. I've heard
of Hinterland, but not Above Suspicion. It looks like Netflix only has
the first series of that.

Wiki says that ABOVE SUSPICION is 11 episodes spread out over 4
'series'. Netflix has 3 'sets' listed on DVD and I think those three
sets include all 11 episodes based upon set #1 including both the first
and second series.

Thanks. The online listing doesn't give the number of seasons, and it
seems to usually say "X seasons" if there are more than one. I'll pull
it up on the TV and see what that shows.

Just as a side note, ABOVE SUSPICION is only on DVD in the USA, so again
this might be a show that requires some VPN alias to watch streaming.

Yeah, I've seen series 1 and 2, haven't been able to track down the rest
yet. Haven't looked at the library though.
