Discussion:
FOSDEM 2018 and announcing a GNU Guix/Guile day!

We are hosting a GNU Guix and Guile day on Friday before FOSDEM (that
is Feb 2nd.). We have a large room for 40 people at http://icab.be/
for the whole day. In the morning we'll have talks - and in the
afternoon it is free discussion and hacking.

Write Manolis, Ludo or me if you would like to give a talk.

We'll want to record them, so if anyone here has a camera and is
willing to help out we will be very grateful!

We'll set up a registration page a few weeks in advance because we
need to know how many lunches to order. Note you can also stay at
ICAB. It is not expensive and I have heard it is pretty good.

FOSDEM is one of the greatest free software events in the world with 2
days of talks on some 30 tracks https://fosdem.org/2018/! You should
consider going. Almost everyone I know who attends FOSDEM keeps coming
back. There is something for everyone! Personally, I get inspired
*every* time (sometimes detrimental to my free time the rest of the
year).

It is how I got to be part of Guix - it was a talk by Ludo. Hope to
see you there!

I am booking a room at ICAB for 3 nights. Anyone else want to stay?

They ask you to book now, and you have to be pretty sure. It is a 20
minutes walk to downtown. I think that is perfect.

That looks great. Unfortunately the walk from there to the University is
about 5km, so I'll probably be staying about midway between the two
again.

Write Manolis, Ludo or me if you would like to give a talk.
Likewise, please think about organizational or technical topics you’d
like to talk about in a possibly more informal way, and hack sessions
you’d like to see.

Looking forward to Feb. 2nd!

Good idea. I suggest we set up one under

For those who can not make it to the meeting - I'm still not sure if
it'll be financially and timewise good for me to attend - could you
try to hook the meeting / talk parts into mumble? In other words,
have one laptop joined on a mumble server and (ideally) let those
back at home participate. We've done this with at least the last
GNUnet eV meeting and a couple of secushare meetings.

You can use our mumble server on gnunet.org for this.

It's a little last minute, but I'm thinking of going. It'd be really
great to meet people in person and also to be able to go to FOSDEM!
Would there still be enough room for me on the Guix/Guile day if I came?

talk about the future of Nix and to take part in GNU Guix dicussions.

One thing we ought to organise is recording video at the event. Who
would be interested in helping out with that? And who could supply
some hardware? I don't think we have to go for professional quality,
but it should be a bit more than a phone recording.

I could bring a camcorder with a stand. Surprisingly, I don’t have a
microphone. We’d need one with a 3.5mm jack. The integrated microphone
would not be sufficient for a decent recording.

The room can hold 50 people, so we should have enough space. Even so,

sign up. Besides, we can plan for coffee/lunch that way.

Hi everyone.

This was huge. We had an amazing day with ~25 GNU Guix contributors
and the father and project leaders of Nix, and it blew me away how
much Guix has progressed in the last year and what interesting
discussions that led to.

I think the next phase we are moving beyond a 'standard' package
manager with optimized builds, channels, workflows, provision and
orchestration. All logical next steps because Guix is such a solid
foundation :).

FOSDEM was great too. It was busier than ever, but the crowd appears
to be increasingly experienced too. In other words the FOSS community
appears to be growing and feels very very solid!

I thank everyone for joining, especially when you realise how much
most of us had to travel. I, for one, feel very inspired!

Heya!

I confirm: this was a great Guix workshop and a great FOSDEM again!
It’s so intense, to me it’s like living two weeks on three days. :-)

I really enjoyed the intimate and focused workshop we had, which is in
sharp contrast with the ever more crowded FOSDEM. That alone could
justify pursuing the same approach in the coming years, IMO. At the
same time, a devroom at FOSDEM proper is a good way to reach out to new
people, which is also a good thing. Maybe we could do both? :-)

Anyway, a big thank you to Manolis and to you Pjotr for taking care of
all this, to Eelco for joining us and for an insightful talk as always,
and to everyone for making it so pleasant to be there!

The last time I looked at booths for FOSDEM they said it was really
crowded and that even groups that might have previously gotten two
tables would only be getting one table. For next year we might consider
pairing up with GNU or with Nix and splitting a table. It'd give us a
meeting area to hang around also.

A devroom is more than one table, though. :-) In previous years, we
shared the devroom with Lua folks, which worked well.

Now, at FOSDEM, Björn and others thought it might be a good idea to have
a Guix booth next time (like in the lobby of building K, if you
remember.) If there are enough volunteers, we should definitely apply.
If all of us can spend a couple of hours at the booth during the
weekend, we should be fine.

BTW, it’s been a couple of weeks already, but I realize we didn’t write

Any volunteer? :-) If you make it plain text or Markdown, we can make
it a blog post.
