Discussion:
Water Heater

Friday in my timezone, and the LOL moment of the week has to be the
comment that the long discussed water heater finally arrived, was
installed, but was the wrong size for the job, and needs replacing
already.

Now that is out and out hilarious. An extremely interesting thread
about nine months ago in another group gave much information and one
would assume that anyone who took part in the conversation, asked so
many (very sensible) questions, would have retained at least some of
that information.

So Jenn, and hubby, thanks for the laugh of the week.

I remember reading that and have to admit that it certainly made me
chuckle. I seem to recall that part of jenn's problem with people
discussing something she brought up was that nobody asked her about the
discussion and that they didn't need any help or information, or
something to that effect. I was unaware of the jenn ruled that stated
posters couldn't post about something she brought up. I guess someone
should have asked if they had bothered to make sure they were ordering
the right thing. LOL

Now, here's the thing, it was jenn who brought this whole thing up, who
claimed they didn't need any help or information, and then laid the
whole thing on that other person who lives in her house, claiming it was
all on him and she was female so she didn't really know much about all
that stuff. I mean, I realize that being without hot water in one's
bathroom can be quite an inconvenience, but still...LOL

LOL. Yeah.

It's not as if they had no idea of their requirements and therefore the
specs of the equipment to fulfil those requirements.

That was the lol moment for me. The thread on alt.2600 in about June
last year was really helpful, and Jenn asked many sensible questions,
and received some useful answers. It tickled my funnybone to see how
'he who shall remain nameless' so soundly fucked it up!

Heh. Her household reminds me of a scene from 'Cool Hand Luke':

Perhaps she should have that engraved on a plaque and hang it over her

So they sent them a white one.

You're in no position to crack on anyone else mental disability. The two
of you (you and hubby) managed to do exactly as I predicted. Fuckup the
installation of a water heater. Kudos to you, ignoramous.

Anyone can install them.. Isn't that what you said? so.. how DID that
workout for you, Jenn? Usually, anyone gets the right part to be
installed.. :)

Dustin in your hate filled rage you missed the true story. Here it is for
you.....

Jenn's partner fitted a water heater. It works fine.

That's it!

I bet you wish the solar panels you fit worked as well. Never mind. Once you
get thru your solar panel apprenticeship you might have more success. Just

The 3rd try it does. :) Jenns partner didn't even purchase the correct

leaks.

The solar modules we installed came online the first time. Nobody took
the wrong measurements or ordered the wrong parts. No, the solar array
was a professional installation; not a do it yourself on a weekend. :)

Nice try at slime, but as usual, you fall on your fucking ass.

I get the feeling he makes a formidable enemy..... it should be
interesting to watch him handle you. :)
Please answer my question Jax. :)

I hate when I just miss a call by the last ring (Hello? Hello?
Damn it!), but when I immediately call back, it rings nine times and
goes to voicemail. What did you do after I didn't answer? Drop the
phone and run away?

Dustin if it was the wrong heater then maybe it was ordered from you and you
sent the wrong item because you had been taking horse stimultants.
Sounds like you've seen the 'horse whisperer' pic TRT provided?

Friday in my timezone, and the LOL moment of the week has to be the
comment that the long discussed water heater finally arrived, was
installed, but was the wrong size for the job, and needs replacing already.
*Exemption is claimed to the no-mention family rule on the grounds
persons already mentioned in recent threads*
I remember reading that and have to admit that it certainly made me
chuckle. I seem to recall that part of jenn's problem with people
discussing something she brought up was that nobody asked her about
the discussion and that they didn't need any help or information, or
something to that effect.
From the impression I got, she seemed to be saying that every post in a
thread should be directed to the OP and no one else, or something.
I think she said something about the whole thing was just a reason to
slam her. Never mind that there was some great information offered
about such a process.

I guess someone should have asked if they had bothered to make sure
they were ordering the right thing. LOL
LOL. Yeah.
It's not as if they had no idea of their requirements and therefore the
specs of the equipment to fulfil those requirements.
It seems that perhaps they did not know their own requirements or the
specs of the equipment :)
So they either stuck a pin in a random catalogue page or when asked
'What kind of water heater do you want' replied 'A white one, please'.
So they sent them a white one.
:-)
If she had only allowed BD to help, by telling him the model number.

Not sure if I've got you here, but the hole on the male plug is designed
to provide a snug fit when inserted into the female receptacle, kind of
like the little ball-bearing and hole on some extension tube fittings.
There is a sensible reason for everything we do. :) Well maybe not
all the time. <g>

Hmmmm. The pins on our plugs are made of what looks like brass in solid
form, or at least some copper alloy or amalgam. No holes, though. I have
a laptop upstairs with a US plug on the end of the lead and those pins
have holes (that's what first gave me cause to wonder) but it's plugged
into an adaptor to go into our power sockets.

The idea that OG had, that it's for positive attachment to some ball and
spring mechanism within the wall socket seems quite feasible, IMO.

I guess someone should have asked if they had bothered to make
sure they were ordering the right thing. LOL
LOL. Yeah.
It's not as if they had no idea of their requirements and
therefore the specs of the equipment to fulfil those requirements.
It seems that perhaps they did not know their own requirements or
the specs of the equipment :)
So they either stuck a pin in a random catalogue page or when asked
'What kind of water heater do you want' replied 'A white one, please'.
So they sent them a white one.
:-)
If she had only allowed BD to help, by telling him the model number.

LOL How fun. :)
A question I've been meaning to ask on and off for quite some time- why
do US power plugs have holes in the pins? I could Google for the answer
but can't be arsed.
I'm not going to look it up either.
They don't *all* have them, and I suspect it is more of a manufacturing
artifact than a standard of any kind. Maybe the little metal pieces are
hung on a wire for the electroplating or acid baths?
2 flat pieces of metal Pos & Neg placed together will spark and become hot,

So Jenn, and hubby, thanks for the laugh of the week.

I remember reading that and have to admit that it certainly
made me chuckle. I seem to recall that part of jenn's problem
with people discussing something she brought up was that
nobody asked her about the discussion and that they didn't
need any help or information, or something to that effect.
From the impression I got, she seemed to be saying that every
post in a
thread should be directed to the OP and no one else, or something.
I think she said something about the whole thing was just a
reason to slam her. Never mind that there was some great
information offered about such a process.

Lots of believable theories, but it seems that, on balance, FTR's
explanation is the more feasible- they're just there for who really knows
what.

Thanks, chaps. :-)

Maybe the manufacturers use the little round pieces punched out for

Is what you colonials refer to as a 'tankless water heater' one into
which cold water flows and out of which issues copious amounts of hot
water at a pre-programmed temperature when a hot tap is opened? If it is,
there's no need for a tank, is there? The hot water's only there when you
need it and it isn't when you don't.

I always just took it to mean that the unit doesn't 'store' hot water.
If *someone* would only fix the stove, she could heat water there -
being careful not to burn it of course.

Yes, I got that much, but does it go direct to the tap for as long as the
tap is opened or does it go to an insulated tank elsewhere for storage?
If the heating of the water to the required temperature isn't actuated by
someone opening a hot tap, then does it simply heat the water on a timer
and send it straight to this unspecified storage location?

If it does the latter, it seems to me that such a system is somewhat
antiquated and potentially wasteful of energy.

Energy waste = higher utility bills (apart from wastefully depleting
natural resources).

Not surprising, with the amount of heat they'd be required to put out.

Electricity is 99.999 efficient, and I am all electric, gas is available
but I don't use it. I heat my house with a heat-pump and it is very
efficient. I was going to buy a gas TV but decided against it.

Is what you colonials refer to as a 'tankless water heater' one into
which cold water flows and out of which issues copious amounts of hot
water at a pre-programmed temperature when a hot tap is opened? If it is,
there's no need for a tank, is there? The hot water's only there when
you need it and it isn't when you don't.
That's how they work.
So what's with monkey-boi saying it's 40 gallon or whatever? there's no
needcfor storage if the hot water comes as demanded by an open tap.

I toyed with the idea of an electric one,
Holy shit, George! Do you have any idea of the heat energy (ie KW X time)
you need to instantaneously heat flowing cold water? Electric *isn't* the
way to go. I take it you don't have gas through the pipes in
Marfa?

but
found out the heating elements have not been perfected and go out in 2
years or less.
Not surprising, with the amount of heat they'd be required to put out.
Electricity is 99.999 efficient, and I am all electric, gas is available
but I don't use it. I heat my house with a heat-pump and it is very
efficient. I was going to buy a gas TV but decided against it.
OMG...that is laugh out loud funny :)

Could always try clockwork or steam TV, George.
