It matters for web pages as well, of course. Typography is not just beauty, it is usability. Indeed, often I think beauty is a consequence of usability.

absolutely clear to the presenter that they were at the Oscars. Why else
would they make that so big and prominent?

Branding.

Marketing people can often be too insistent on the prominence of the
labels on everything, to the detriment of functionality. They appear to
believe that the branding is more important than real information.
