Not Lala Land. Warren Beatty blows Presentation.

Lala Land up giving acceptance speeches and then had to be told that
they lost. Classy classy response by LaLa Land people.

Of course he blew it. The card read Emma Stone in LaLaLand for Best
Actress. He can read can't he?

He was supposed to question why the card was in the wrong envelop.

"Beatty explained that he was confused as to what to announce because
Stone's card for best actress was accidentally in the best picture
envelope."

"Beatty appeared speechless before handing the card to Dunaway, who
revealed that La La Land wins."

I have seen stills that clearly say "BEST ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE"
(all caps, boxed) on the envelope in Beatty's hand.
And the card inside was indeed the card for that award.

(Sounds like the Hugo Award tradition would work better...once
the winners are determined the winner's name is engraved on the
base, and the award sent onstage with a cardboard mask over the name
which is removed when the nominees have been announced).

Beatty was obviously confused. Last night I reported what he'd said.
He's claiming today that the mix up was not his fault. I agree, the
mix up wasn't his fault but failing to say or do anything once he
realized things were not correct WAS his fault.

Warren Beatty is not an operations engineer. He makes his living by
reading things other people write down for him. In what way is it his
responsibility to do anything about a screw-up that is the obvious,
direct responsibility of a dozen or more Hollywood producers whose
compensation for this one event is probably about six times the
American median household income? One of *those* jackasses should

If I'd caught the error, understood its nature, and felt that I could
do or say something helpful, of course not. Nor would Beatty. But
calling the incident his "fault" when running a show is so far outside
his experience and responsibilities is just beyond silly. Particularly
considering the army of overpaid Hollywood egomaniacs whose
responsibility it actually *was*.

Beatty was not responsible for any of this up until the point he opened the envelope and saw "Emma Stone - La La Land." At that point he should have done something OTHER than hand the card to Dunaway.

That's all he was responsible for. I'm still waiting for someone to explain why PWC or the producers did NOTHING for the 5 minutes the presentation took before someone finally took action.

It seems to me there was NO plan in place to deal with the possibility that something like this could happen. It was negligent.

It only goes to prove that Price Waterhouse will correct an "award malfunction" live on-the-air if necessary.

About 25 years-plus years ago, Jack Palance won Best Supporting Actor for "City Slickers." As per custom, Palance awarded the Best Supporting Actress Award the following year. When the surprise winner was the hasn't-paid-her-dues-yet relevant newcomer ingénue Marisa Tomei, everybody thought a doddering Palance had read any ol' name from the card.

The Price Waterhouse guys, at the time, maintained that, yes, Ms. Tomei had legitimately won for "My Cousin Vinnie," and that, if indeed, Palance had announced the incorrect winner, then some PW overseer would have immediately corrected he faux pas.

Thus, after all these years, Marisa Tomei, Jack Palance, and Price Waterhouse Coopers have all been vindicated.

There are now 103 living best actor and best actress Academy Award
winners. Eight are younger than Casey Affleck, 41, and two (Brie
Larson and Jennifer Lawrence) are younger than Emma Stone, 28. The
oldest winner is Olivia de Havilland at 100. The oldest best actor
winner is Sidney Poitier at 90.

It is quite common for the best actor winner to be more than a decade
older than the best actress winner in the same year, but the reverse
isn't exactly rare - see Eddie Redmayne and Julianne Moore, for
example, in 2015.

The earliest award year with both recipients surviving is 1972 - Gene
Hackman and Jane Fonda. The most recent award year with neither
surviving recipient is 1982, when Henry Fonda and Katharine Hepburn
won. The most recent award year with one surviving recipient is 2006,
the year the late Philip Seymour Hoffman won best actor.

The most recent death is Luise Rainier in 2014.

Regardless of the circus atmosphere that occurred, I actually thought it was a nice touch that Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were invited by AMPAS to present the Best Picture award in recognition of the 50th anniversary of their landmark film "Bonnie and Clyde."

However, this got me to thinking if this might be a new Academy precedent. If they use this dynamic next year in honour of the 50th anniversary of a seminal 1968 film, who are the Academy going to get as presenters?

I am willing to wager that the choices WILL NOT be:

a) Keir Dullea and Gary Lockwood from "2001: A Space Odyssey" (although they'd both be perfect for special effects awards).
b) Olivia Hussey and Leonard Whiting from Franco Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet"
(costuming wards?).
c) Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes from "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
d) any of the performers from "Night of the Living Dead," many of whom are on the autograph convention circuit.

If it's going to be a 1968/50th anniversary bellwether, "for your consideration":
Barbra Streisand ("Funny Girl")
Jane Fond ("Barbarella").
Mel Brooks ("The Producers")
Mia Farrow ("Rosemary's Baby") -- safe to invite her -- Woody Allen won't be there!
Sir Paul McCartney and Ringo (although their participation in "Yellow Submarine" was limited, it would be nice if they present the animation awards).
