Seems like every other hurricane comes pretty
close to PR - last years was special only because
it was stronger than usual. Expect a lot of those
quick infrastructure repairs to be washed away
by the next hurricane. Only San Juan may remain
as something close to a 1st-world environment,
the rural areas ... no roads, no electricity, no
communications, no services, no nothin'. Just a
solar panel and a tiny LED as evidence it's the
21st century. Haiti may start to look attractive .....

The devastation in Puerto Rico appears to be worse than that in New
Orleans, and much more like that experienced by countries devastated by
WWII. It took years for Europe to fully recover, and it will very likely
take similar time for Puerto Rico.

Germany had the Marshal Plan. What's on tap for PR?

It's not that the damage was particularly worse ... it's
WHERE it happened. Between being way out in the
ocean, totally disorganized and packed with ultracorrupt
pols and already really REALLY deep in debt - I don't think
there's much that can be done with it.

PR really is a bananna republic with a US flag stapled on
to it. They've scraped by for a long time, but momentum
began to run out a decade ago and this last storm brought
things to a complete stop.

As I said, San Juan might be revived as a sort of tourist
trap for tan-deprived yankees, but outside the city limits
it's gonna be 3rd world all the time.

New Orleans took a big hit ... but mainland resources
could just drive right to it. The pols there were kinda
corrupt and incompetent - but as an official US state
there is a lot more oversight and regulation that keeps
things from getting TOO bad.

As US citizens they are free to travel within the US and vote if they move to a
state. Many are moving to swing states. I'm sure they will show their
appreciation of Repubicans.

Keep telling them it's not your fault. I'm sure they will find that persuasive.

The place really went to shit during the Obama years ...
vast escalating debts and corruption Obama wouldn't
do anything about.

Ignored the laws of Congress. Congress forbade Puerto Rico declaring bankruptcy
for debt forgiveness or reorganisation. Ask Drumpf about usefulnes of bankruptcy.
