I always thought they'd launch from Land's End southwestward over the
Atlantic at a heading of 267°. There are 5,000 miles of open ocean to
travel before anything would pass over the heads of Panamanians:

the earth's rotation. Vandenburg is unusual, but it is used for polar orbit
insertion.
