Sibling Rivalry

Tune: Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen)
Lyrics: Susanna R. A. Miller

To tease my sister - where's the crime? -
but now she says it's payback time,
her solemn little face devoid of pity;
and she's marched me upstairs to her room
to face the facts and face my doom,
which mum and dad agreed on in committee.
in committee, in committee
in committee, in committee

And she's popped a shiny DVD
into a tiny pink TV
to play cartoons, or should I say anime?
And she's taped my eyelids open wide,
my bit of fun's undone my pride;
I'm only glad right now my friends can't see me.
they can't see me, they can't see me
they can't see me, they can't see me

For she's tied me to her favourite chair
with scarlet ribbons from her hair
and pink duct tape, bought for her in the city,
And she's left the room and left me there
to stare and stare and stare and stare
at nothing but the world of Hello Kitty.
Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty

I'm truly sorry, sister dear;
I think I've learned my lesson here,
but I understand if I must stay here longer,
And when you undo this tape - these ties -
from torso, ankles, wrists, and eyes
my heart will stay in bonds unseen yet stronger.

Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty

For I've learned that love can be kawaii,
and beauty stands five apples high,
and bright red bows make everything so pretty,
And someday, when I wed a wife,
I know I'll have a happy life
with someone by my side like Hello Kitty.

Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty
Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty...

How'd you manage that, they're ubiquitous?

Certainly I've seen Hello Kitty statues and such. But the song
seemed to be describing a Hello Kitty TV program or movie (my guess
would be anime), and I haven't seen that.

Likewise for me. I didn't know there even was one, though I'm not
surprised if there is.

Yep. It's a kid's show (surprise).

It also should be noted that the creator(s) announced formally last year that Hello Kitty was not a cat, but she was in fact a little girl. My scant knowledge of the anime genre supplies that perhaps Hello Kitty is a "cat type" personality, which follows her friends which are other animals are other animal personalities.

She's anthropomorphic.

She's anthropomorphic.
Yes. The curator of the Hello Kitty exhibit had this to say about her years ago:

"That's one correction Sanrio made for my script for the show. Hello Kitty is not a cat. She's a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She's never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it's called Charmmy Kitty."

Apparently she also has a twin sister, is a Scorpio, is in the third grade, and lives outside London.

Which London? If it's London UK she can't be in third grade - there's no such thing
in the UK.

It's probably London UK considering anime concentrated on England as a setting for a long while (they go through place fads), and she was created a long long time ago - also keeping in mind that we're given that information through the anthropologist who was corrected by the creators. Which means the data they gave her was probably translated from the British or Japanese equivalent.

They might be using the American term for the American market. If she were in third grade in the US, she'd be about 7. The British equivalent would be called Year Three. The Japanese equivalent would be Grade 2 of elementary school.

The Sound of ...

ttto The Sound of Silence, Paul Simon

Hello Kitty, my old friend,
I've come to buy from you again.
Perhaps a hat or pair of mittens
Emblazoned with your waving kitten.
That's the image that you've planted in my brain
For your gain
By means of ad...vertisements*.
*US pronunciation: "ADvertisements"

In nauseous dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of potholed stone.
In the halo of a spotlight
I saw a shining can of Bud Light.
As a moth is attracted to a flame
So my aim
Fixed on that ad...vertisement.

And all around the ad I saw
Ten thousand hawkers, maybe more.
But the tale that each was telling
Was lost amid the others' selling
And their sense and their meaning all were drowned
By the sound
Of countless ad...vertisements.

"Fools," said I, "do you not know?
Commerce to a cancer grows
When the making of our choices
Confronts a myriad of voices."
But my words in that storm of noise were lost,
Torn and tossed:
Just one more ad...vertisement.

And the hawkers clamored on
Till I wakened with the dawn.
And in the welcome morning sunlight
I popped a chilly can of Bud Light
From my insulated Hello Kitty purse
And said, "A curse
Upon all ad...vertisements!"

Nice lyric, but I am wary of any claim that "too many choices" exist. Sure, some folks would find the market less "confusing" if only one brand of beer were on offer, but what if that one brand were the one beer you swore you'd never drink even if it *were* the last brand on earth? (This is probably a topic for another song!)
