Discussion:
Don't Want "Install Updates and then Shut Down"

Eventhough Windows Updates is set to check for updates but let me decide
whether to download and install, when I click on the Start orb, the Shut Down
button wants to install updates and then shut down.

I can do an Alt-F4 and get a shut down menu that will let me do a shut down,

If I do the Alt-F4 shut down, or restart, the Shut Down button no longer has
the install updates options for the first few minutes, but it eventually
shows up again.

How can I eliminate this for good?

By using Linux Mint Mate.

He could also try a clean install of Win 7. This time, the "Let me
decide..." option should be selected right after the clean install.
Better, disconnect all networks when doing the clean install.

The first word is the Distro, the second word is the Desktop Environment.

Scroll down and look to the right, for a Distro list.

That'll teach me! I was just trying to be facetious: I thought "Johnny"
was just saying "use Linux Mint, Mate!" - I hadn't realised there really
was a variation called Mate! (As I verified from the link Patrick
provided; when I tried the above one, I got a popover asking about
profiling - when I clicked no, I got another, where the only options
were AGREE and Back, and I had no intention of agreeing.)

He who prides himself on giving what he thinks the public wants is often
creating a fictitious demand for low standards which he will then satisfy.

LOL! Actually, and being pedantic, there isn't. There is one called
MATE however.

That's not trolling. He/She was just advertising about Linux, kind of
like targeted advertising. :)

I admit that one could not solve Window$ problems by switching to other
operating systems. Other operating systems might have their own share of
problems.

I think those updates were downloaded and installed *BEFORE* you choose
the "Let me decide..." option. You should just install those pending
updates when you have time.

Actually the "Let me decide..." was chosen years and years ago. Updates
have been piling up for a long time. But, your statement about pending
updates made me think that I should look to see what updates had been
downloaded and 'needed' to be installed.

There are 43 important updates and nine optional updates. Of the 43
optional updates, eight had already downloaded amd were:

Security Update for Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack Service Pack 3
(KB4018354) Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007 (KB4018353)
Security Update for Microsoft Office OneNote 2007 (KB3114456)
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 (KB4011200)
Update for Microsoft Office Publisher 2007 (KB4011203)
Microsoft Office File Validation Add-in
Security Update for Microsoft Silverlight (KB4023307), and
Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - 4.7.205.0 (KB3037257)

Odd that that last one is from 2/10/2015, and I've had lots of Updates for
Microsoft Security Essentials installed since. Seems like nearly one a
day.

After hiding those updates that had been downloaded, the Shut down button
no longer said "installs updates and shuts down your computer". If I
unhid any hidden update that had been downloaded, the "installs updates
and shuts down your computer" reappeaared on the Shut down button.

So, looks like this is solved.

Thank you for the clue, Mr. Man-wai Chang.

This is some text from a previous post by "Cameo".

"I was able to use the original Win7 install DVD in Repair Mode that
gave my DOS command window where I entered:

DISM /image:c:\ /cleanup-image /revertpendingactions

Because the corrupt package was not installed completely
I was able to use this shorter DISM command instead of the longer

DISM /image:c:\ /remove-package /packagename: etc. command.
"

So somehow, you'd want to figure out what was pending,
before starting. I don't know how to do that.

Maybe the first command works all by itself.

Try a backup of C: first, just in case you don't
like the behavior ten minutes from now.
