The BBC news channels have been in full foaming at the mouth tribute mode for
24 hours, and this is for a woman most of their staff probably had to look up
on Wikipedia just to find out who she was; because they never mentioned her
or her songs while she was alive.

Some over-ego’ed tosser on 5 Live was so gushing they said she was the
ultimate black diva.

Diva?

Haven’t these ignorants heard of Shirley Bassey or Tina Turner?

Maybe they misread diver?

I am glad to discover that I am not the only person whose opinion is

AAMOF, I believe the same to be true of Tina T, though the wonderful
Shirley Bassey is beyond critcism (as also the late Ella Fitzgerald).

I couldn't remember how long ago it was without looking it up, and I
wasn't going to do that. But I recall that some of her music was popular
with advertising agencies maybe twenty-plus years ago.

AFAICR, she was one of those artistes whose fame rested on a very few
well-known recordings, the one I remember most being "My Baby Don't Care
For Me". The one with the mock-Bach interlude on piano.

I was thinking more of that Nina Simone song, but I have no fear of
being totally unfashionable and saying - truthfully - that whilst I
appreciate the obvious loss to family and friends, I do not value the
music of Aretha Franklin and never have. I am well aware that this is
not a widely-shared public view, especially within the music world
itself, but I see no point in gushing praise for material which simply
doesn't appeal to me.

I hate it when celebrities pass away because all one hears about for the next

celebrities had not produced anything in decades. She was a good singer but
her output had absolutely no impact on my life.

for
24 hours, and this is for a woman most of their staff probably
had to look
up
on Wikipedia just to find out who she was; because they never
mentioned
her
or her songs while she was alive.
Some over-ego’ed tosser on 5 Live was so gushing they said she was the
ultimate black diva.
Diva?
Haven’t these ignorants heard of Shirley Bassey or Tina Turner?
Maybe they misread diver?
I am glad to discover that I am not the only person whose opinion is
that AF was and is somewhat overrated.
AAMOF, I believe the same to be true of Tina T, though the wonderful
Shirley Bassey is beyond critcism (as also the late Ella
Fitzgerald).
I was a big fan of Nina Simone, and everyone seemed to ignore her until she
was dead; then her music seemed to suddenly be discovered by every TV ad
executive on the planet.
Mind you, she was blues rather than soul or jazz.
??
Her music has been in use for adverts for some years, possibly decades.
Exactly.
She died 15 years ago.
The Urethra Franklin song that I recall best is the one where she tells
everyone how to spell a word Sesame-Street style.
I always think the songs are more important than the artists. So, for
me, Aretha Franklin is like Tom Jones: only a few well-known good songs.
I prefer Dionne Warwick, who was fortunate to have been chosen by Burt
Bacharach as a sort of tryer-outer for his songs.

Shirley or Tina? How about real greats like Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah
Vaughn or a dozen others ?
