Discussion:
Eudora Address Book disabled by Win10?
(too old to reply)

Been using Eudora in Windows 10 since release, and suddenly a week or
two ago the Address book will no longer populate To: or CC: fields in
new messages. Heard rumors recent Win10 update killed the Eudora
address book.
Anyone know if this is true?
Any way to get it to work again?

Haven't noticed any changes here -- and just tried creating a message
using "to:" button in the address book... It worked.

Unless you can cite the source of the rumor, it is just FUD.

Yes, it is true. The problems that many people have with the address
book happened after the recent massive Creators update for Windows 10.
It is an intermittent problem and has no known permanent solution.
So far the only work-around is to restart Eudora, once or several
times.

I think Micro$hit has a "development" team devoted to creating updates
that neuter legacy programs :-(

More like they don't endlessly make efforts to keep outdated software operational.
Any program inevitably stops working fully if it's not keeping up with development.
It's just a matter of time. Eudora effectively went to its deathbed when Qualcomm
dropped it.

Nonsense. Micro$hit is a monopoly and need to be put down.

Eudora is working just fine on my Win7 box. I just installed it in a
NON-program files directory to keep it working properly.

Jim, I realize this is an old thread, but I'm just seeing it now. What is Win7 box? Is that something you install on Windows 10 that acts like Windows 7?

It's just a computer running Windows 7.

Take into account that the last version of Eudora came out in 2006
(WinXP era), and Windows 7 didn't come out until 2009 -- and the core of
the operating systems haven't really changed -- if it runs on Win7 it
should run on Win10. And it does -- if installed /properly/ (executables in
system controlled [Program Files (x86)] and user data in
%userprofile%\appdata).

The only OS changes over the years that might have had an effect is
ancient -- it was the bug in multi-select that resulted in only two items
at a time actually being selected (first and last of the group, as I
recall). That change came out with WinXP I believe.

It was Vista.

They didn't kill the address book but they wounded it. Like Ajo says.

But for me it had much less effect, since I've never gone first to the
address book, and iiuc highlighted a nickname, then clicked on To or CC:

Maybe I don't have enough friends, but I know their nicknames by heart
and I just type them into a new email form. (In some cases I have a
nickname for a set of other nicknames, like All, which doesn't include
business contacts or doctors, etc.)

But since the arrogantly named Creator's Edition, I have had trouble
adding a new nickname, twice. (Maybe I don't make enough new friends
either.) The second time I closed Eudora and I added both as soon as I
restarted it. I only had to restart it once in this case (although
others have had to restart more than once.) Worked fine. One can keep
a list of nicknames to add if there are more than one or two. Until he
adds them he can just enter the whole address. I haven't done that and
it's barely affected me.
