This tetragram opens the third and final phase in the triadic Mystery of
Heaven-Earth-Man. Not surprisingly, in view of man's many
imperfections, the final phase of the Mystery generally marks the least
auspicious of the three phases. Man of the verses belonging to
Tetragrams #54-#81 assigned to Man specifically address individual human
responsibility in the face of contrary trends and an unhappy fate.
It is autumn. The decline of the myriad things is increasingly evident.
In the midst of growing troubles, the wise person does well to
remember that there is 'a time for decrease... and a time for increase.
In decreasing and in increasing... one must go with the time.'
Self-restraint, perseverance in the Good, and 'a decrease ion faults'
are advised by the Changes. Only be such methods can one hope to escape
the downward course associated with the end (whether the end be the end
of the annual cycle, t he end of a lifespan, or the end of a project).
Appraisal 1: Good at diminishing, and so undiminished.
A mystery deep and dark.
Fathoming 1: That good diminishing does not diminish
Means: Constantly he empties himself.
Appraisal 1 corresponds to first thoughts, the Water phase, and to the
lowest social rank. Individuals should imitate water, those nature it
is to see low places. By shunning the limelight and cleansing the self
of egotistical impulses, the individual can avoid the calamities that
result from arrogance and notoriety. Paradoxically, such decrease
brings only increase in the end. As the Lao TZU (d. 531 BCE) writes:
He does not show himself
And so is conspicuous.
He does not consider himself right
And so is illustrious.
He does not brag
And so has merit.
he does not boast
And so endures.
Appraisal 2: A heart diminished will strike itself.
So as to punish his own person.
Fathoming 2: That a heart inflicts the self
Means: He confines it at centre.
Evil acts that ignore the conscience diminish the heart. As the moral
will is weakened over time, the body's physical store of ch'i is
gradually depleted. Once hidden inner weakness affect the entire body,
the damage they have wrought becomes obvious to all. Then 'what truly
is inside takes form on the outside.' Though the petty man tries to
attribute his failing powers to an innate incapacity for Good, the truth
is that he himself has stunted his own development by hampering his
conscience.
Appraisal 3: Decreasing his decorum
Helps bring light to the steps.
Fathoming 3: Decreasing ceremony
Means: He wishes to restrain himself.
In most cases, decorum and ceremony have positive connotation in ancient
China, but here the Mystery calls for a decrease in pomp and ceremony.
The steps symbolize advancement in the official bureaucracy.
Therefore, the verses may decry those in high position who use elaborate
ceremony simply to distance themselves from those below. Or, they may
worn those who want to advance further against excessive pomp and
display. For members of the ruling elite, a desire for less formality
(the initial act of self-restraint) may lead eventually to even greater
and more widespread self-restraint, as 'higher-ups' accept the frank
remonstrances of those below. If they respond by working to reform
themselves, their advance in the Way (and often, incidentally, in their
careers) proceeds quickly.
Occasionally , the graph translated as 'ceremony' means 'canons' or
'rules'. It is conceivable, then, that Yang Hsiung makes a second
argument: laws should be promulgated only when they demonstrably keep
the population from committing evil actions. When laws are kept to a
minimum, men will work to restrain themselves. This will lead to social
order and the glory of the dynastic house.
Appraisal 4: Good order diminished
Reduces his position.
Fathoming 4: Decreasing order
Means: This is no way to control the masses.
State control is justified insofar as it relieves the masses from
crippling insecurities (such as those prompted by crime or *natural*
*disasters*). If the government cannot insure good order, it no longer
deserves the support of the masses. Here the petty man in high office
can neither control disorder nor hold onto his own position. How, then,
could he hope to transform the masses through the suasive force of his
moral example?
Appraisal 5: Decrease: the proven good of Yellow Earth.
When the low receives from the high: true peace..
Fathoming 5: Decrease as Yellow's virtue
Means: The subordinate's Way is now proper.
Appraisal 5, of course, corresponds to the Son of Heaven. Yellow (or
gold) is the colour identified with desirable centrality and with Earth.
The good king acts as the centre for his kingdom provided that he
distributes his favours fairly among his subjects, in effect downplaying
his own elevated position. In this, he mimics *Earth's* *own*
*propensity* *to* *level* *itself*. In return for his humility, he owns
the maximum cooperation from those below. This makes for peace and
social order.
Appraisal 6: Obscuring what was clear,
He amasses but never reduces,
Ungiving as a stone.
Fathoming 6: Obscuring, ungiving
Means: His favours do not bring balance.
The wise ruer distributes just rewards those below, with several aims in
mind: (1) he wishes to focus attention on examples of model conduct, (2)
he wishes to 'share his pleasures' with the common people, and (3) he
wishes to teach them the virtues of cooperation. The stupid ruler
confuses the mere accumulation of land and goods with the accumulation
of charismatic authority. Such an individual, intent only on adding to
his coffers, fails to reduce taxes or bestow bounties on the subject
population. Once the stingy ruler fails to teach his people the
benefits of generosity, they, not unreasonably, feel they owe him no
more loyalty than they do a stone.
Appraisal 7: Decreasing his infirmities,
And so diminishing his cares,
The danger thus is stayed.
Fathoming 7: Decreasing his infirmities
Means: He brings no danger on himself.
In the Changes, the phrase 'decreasing his infirmities' signifies the
noble man's reformation of his faults. Through continual reform, the
individual is brought to the state where his health (moral, mental and
perhaps physical) improves. Now in his prime, the individual is strong
enough to withstand difficulty; thus, he avoids danger.
Appraisal 8: Its flowing out in floods
Brings loss to life's root.
Fathoming 8: Flowing, ever flowing
Means: The living root is destroyed.
In living plants, vigorous growth depends upon string, healthy roots.
If the sap gushes out from the plant, the death of the plant inevitably
follows. By analogy, in the individual conscience, the roots of moral
action must be nourished by repeated noble acts. If violence is done to
the conscience, it is soon destroyed.
Appraisal 9: Decrease at the end
Helps in ascending West Mountain
And overseeing Great River.
Fathoming 9: Ascent by decrease at the end
Means: Truly this can be done.
Climbing mountains to oversee great rivers is 'using the tall to oversee
what is low.' West Mountain is said to be the site of the Chou royal
family's ancestral tombs; as such, it represents their great patrimony
of charismatic virtue. In popular tradition, West Mountain is also said
to be the sacred abode of the immortals under their *QUEEN* *MOTHER*.
Perhaps also considered to be Nu (also Nenu, Nunu, Nun), feminine Naunet
(also Nunut, Nuit, Nent, Nunet), whom is the deification of the
primordial watery abyss within the Hermopolitan Ogdoad cosmogony of
ancient Egyptian religion. The name is paralleled with nen "inactivity"
in a play of words in, "I raised them up from out of the watery mass
[nu], out of inactivity [nen]". The name has also been compared to the
Coptic noun "abyss; deep".
Nut is also the name of the sky goddess of the Ennead of Heliopolis. The
name is spelled phonetically with the nw hieroglyph (may be repeated
three times), with the determiners "sky" and waters".
The Ancient Egyptians envisaged the oceanic abyss of the Nun as
surrounding a bubble in which the sphere of life is encapsulated,
representing the deepest mystery of their cosmogony. In Ancient Egyptian
creation accounts the original mound of land comes forth from the waters
of the Nun. The Nun is the source of all that appears in a
differentiated world, encompassing all aspects of divine and earthly
existence. In the Ennead cosmogony Nun is perceived as transcendent at
the precursor point of creation who joined together as the OGDOAD of
eight primeval deities to create the cataclysmic event that gives rise
to the sun and sun god Atum the creator god whom then creates the Ennead.
Budge (1904) compares the concept to a group of four pairs of primeval
gods mentioned in the Babylonian Enûma Eliš, viz. Apzu and Tiamat, Lahmu
and Lahamu, Anshar and Kishar, Anu and Nudimmud.
Budge also argues that the Ogdoad is the original "company of gods" or
paut neteru, represented by nine "axes" or "flagpoles" (the hieroglyph
sign for "god", arrived at by augmenting the original Ogdoad by the
local chief deity of Heliopolis, Tem, by the authors of the theological
system reflected in the Pyramid Texts. [E A Budge 1904, The Gods of the

Like the other OGDOAD deities, Nu did not have temples or any centre of
worship. Even so, Nu was sometimes represented by a sacred lake, or, as
at Abydos, by an underground stream.
In the 12th Hour of the Book of Gates Nu is depicted with upraised arms
holding a "solar bark" (or barque, a boat). The boat is occupied by
eight deities, with the scarab deity Khepri standing in the middle
surrounded by the seven other deities.

Dramaturgy is a sociological perspective commonly used in
microsociological accounts of social interaction in everyday life. The
term was first adapted into sociology from the theatre as a metaphor for

the divine cannot support full illumination. Ignorance and insensitivity
continue to reign.
Appraisal 2: Lucid at heart, he glimpses Heaven,

Fathoming 2: Bright-bellied and sky-glimpsing
Means: At centre, exceptional brilliance.
This Appraisal reverses the message of the previous Appraisal,
predicting the most profound insight.
Appraisal 3: Blind masters: some teach archery
But fail to hit their target.
Fathoming 3: Instruction by the blind
Means: They lack the means to discriminate.
Appraisal 3 marks the transition from thought to action. Lacking
sufficient clarity himself, how can a teacher enlighten his pupils? As
the philosopher Mencius wrote:
MEN OF WORTH USE THEIR LIGHT TO ENLIGHTEN. NOWADAYS SOME WOULD USE THEIR
BENIGHTED STATE TO ENLIGHTEN.
Appraisal 4: With Right as his mirror, he does not go astray.
To others, he is one to rely on.
Fathoming 4: The Right reflecting true
Means: Integrity can be trusted.
Whoever takes the worthy man as model provides contemporaries with a
perfect 'mirror' of good conduct.
Appraisal 5: Turning his back on what is bright,
Going against the light,
He hits enveloping darkness.
Fathoming 5: Against the bright, against the light
Means: This is what others turn against.
Appraisal 5, corresponding to the Son of Heaven, is ruler of the
tetragram. The arrogant ruler refuses to take advice from worthy
supporters, for he believes himself sufficiently enlightened. It will
not be long before his subjects revolt:

Reluctant to dazzle and charm.
Fathoming 6: The dim light of day
Means: The centre is not blinded by light.
In a benighted age, the noble person hides his light, since the world is
unused to such brilliance. The commentator Wang Ya, however, offers a
completely different reading of the poem:
From the dark, going to light
He does not think it right to flicker or be weak.
From the dark, going to light
Means: The centre does not obscure the light.
By this reading, the noble man is careful not to be like the weak
flicker of a small candle. To give out insufficient light will only
prove misleading to
others.
The Jewish holiday of Hanukkah is eight days, Jews celebration of eight
days as memorial of the miracle that occurred about 2,200 years ago.
Here's the story in a nutshell.
A tyrant king from Damascus had ruled over the Jews and forced them to
worship Greek gods. Jewish rebels fought for their freedom for three
years and, victorious, reclaimed the holy temple in Jerusalem. Now to
rededicate the temple, they needed oil to light the menorah but they
could only find enough to keep the flames burning for one night. And
here's the miracle: The oil lasted for eight days. In that time, they
were able to make more oil and keep the eternal flame lit.
Appraisal 7: Dimming the good,"
They bring to light what they abhor.
Fathoming 7: Evil in obscuring the good
Means: His unenlightened state is all too clear.
Appraisal 7 reflects the failure of will to do good. The individual’s
evil propensities grow increasingly obvious over time.
"For the ships of Chittim shall come against him: therefore he shall be
grieved, and return, and have indignation against the holy covenant: so
shall he do; he shall even return, and have intelligence with them that
forsake the holy covenant." [Daniel 11:30].
It is almost universally agreed that this refers to Antiochus IV
Epiphanes and his war against Ptolemy Physcon. When Antiochus had
advanced to attack Ptolemy in order to possess Pelusium, he was met by
the Roman legate Gaius Popilius Laenus. Popilius handed Antiochus
tablets containing the decree of the Senate, ordering him to cease his
war with Ptolemy. Upon reading these, Antiochus expressed a desire to
confer with his friends. Popilius drew a circle about Antiochus in the
sand and bade him give his answer before he stepped from the circle.
After a moment of awkward silence, Antiochus replied that he would do
whatever the Romans demanded. Accordingly, a stated number of days were
allowed him, within which he withdrew his army into Syria, where he
attacked Jerusalem, slew forty-thousand, sold an equal number of slaves,
and robbed the temple of eighteen hundred talents of gold. Since it is
the Kittim (Romans) who succeeded to world dominion following the
Greeks, it is they who are depicted as the fourth beast of Daniel
chapter seven, whose king (the "little horn") persecutes the saints for
three and a half years, but is destroyed by the coming of the "Ancient
of Days" (Christ) (Dan. 7:24-27). Such is the process by which the
Essenes almost certainly would have identified the Romans as the
eschatological enemy who would be destroyed by the "Prince of the
Covenant." Several passages from the scrolls serve to confirm this
identification. For example, the Commentary on Nahum, which takes the
prophet’s words against Nineveh as a type of God’s eschatological
judgment against Jerusalem, states at verse 2:11:
"Interpreted, this concerns Demetrius king of Greece who sought, on the
counsel of those who seek smooth things, to enter Jerusalem. But God did
not permit the city to be delivered into the hands of the kings of
Greece, from the time of Antiochus until the coming of the rulers of the
Kittim. But then she shall be trampled under their feet."[29]
After Antiochus IV Epiphanes none of the kings of Greece entered
Jerusalem until the city was captured by Pompey the Great in 63 BCE. It
continued under the power of the Romans after its capture by Pompey
until it was destroyed in A.D. 70 by Titus. The prediction that the city
would be "trampled under the feet" of the Kittim finds surprizing
correlation in the New Testament: Jesus’ Olivet Discourse and Revelation
use identical language to the same purpose [Luke 21:24; Revelation 11:2].
Appraisal 8: Dusk is a time that benefits the moon.
A small good omen, but too soon for stars.
Fathoming 8: That dusk favours the moon
Means: Still there is something to be hoped for.
The dim light of dusk as we near the end of the cycle sets the stage for
the moon. Sometime soon, the stars will come out. Although the dark age
might profit most from the great light provided by the sages, a lesser
light can still do some good.
Appraisal 9: Drawn-out sighs at the time
Do not secure the good.
The male breaks a hairpin.
The wife changes her luck.
Fathoming 9: Not capturing their good
Means: The husband dies, his wife sighs.
Death is, after all, the extreme case of dimness and insensibility.
When a husband dies, his hairpins are broken to signify that he will no
longer be using them. His widow changes her hair ornaments to don
mourning, showing all that her luck has changed for the worse. (By a
pun, 'luck' and 'hair ornaments' are read interchangeably in the fourth
line of the Appraisal.)

Among the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Commentary on Habakkuk is especially
insightful. The commentary repeatedly states that it concerns the "final
generation" and "end of days," and treats the destruction of Jerusalem

Jerusalem by the Kittim. That the Essenes were correct in interpreting
Habakkuk this way is confirmed by Hab. 2:3, which states that the vision
is for the time of "the end." It is also confirmed by the epistle to the
Hebrews, which quotes Habakkuk to encourage Jewish believers to remain
faithful in the face of persecution, because Christ would shortly come
to save them from their trials, and visit unquenchable wrath upon the
Jews [Heb. 10:37, 38; cf. 9:28). Essene comments upon Habakkuk 2:7-8

At verses [1:14-16], the identity of the Kittim is made unmistakable

Within psychoanalytic theory, when an individual is unable to integrate
