Agreed.It may be you have to use audio capture software as the sites may not let you download ? One app I heard of years ago was " Audio Hi Jack " , or soething like that, although the name would give one pause.

Also remarks by Bavouzet on the Left-Hand as a “ real masterpiece “ compared to Ravel’s G major, the Left-Hand’s anti-war aspect ( Bavouzet’s cadenzas here ) , that it should sound at times like it is one hand , the “ before the Creation “ sense of the opening , and an admission of one small “ cheat “ on his recording with Tortilier despite having played the work “ 40 times “. No one is playing this Concerto better today, that I have heard. Even for Bavouzet’s huge technique, some opening slips more than offset by the energy of live.

Thanks for the info. Bavouzet recently released a cd set of Ravel's complete solo piano works. For me "Miroirs" is Ravel's penultimate solo piano work. Another "Miroirs" worth considering would be that of Herbert Schuch on his debut Oehms label cd of a few years ago.

In the 1st Sonata here , he colorfully illuminates the thicket of sound , gives weight where needed without losing momentum or becoming ponderous, youthful vigor applied to a then youthful composer’s music, brilliant final mov. Great Brahms.

My recording of the Novak is by Frantisek Rauch, the Smetana by Radoslav Kvapil. Vondracek certainly matches those, per my audio memory Vondracek perhaps even more colorful,nunanced,charming.

This Bis disc is Haochen Zhang's first studio recording and I think
his first commercial release since the ones from the 2009 Van Cliburn
competition. I wonder what the explanation is. He certainly plays as
well as some better known pianists. The blurb on the video below just
says recording has not been much of a priority for him. He is more
interested in live concertizing. Has anybody here heard him live?

Good to hear. He's playing what must be the same program in the SF
area in April (at least it has the same composers and is scheduled
to include "Miroirs"). Very much looking forward to it - I've
previously heard him live only in two-piano works (also excellent).

Jorge Bolet, live in 1973 , from the Marston cd set ( a must have cd set, IMHO ) , Strauss-Godowsky “ Fledermaus “ :

Despite poor sound on the YT ( much better on the Marston set ), Bolet live in 1979, Chopin / Godowsky Op.10, # 1 :

If I recall, 8 of the Godowsky Chopin Studies are on the Marston set, all live, more musical than either Grante or Hamelin while of equal or more virtuosity.

yes, an amazing performance. He was a very erratic performer and the contents in the Marston set reflects this fact.
I heard in him in NYC when he was in his 50s and was very disappointed. Then again, when one hears this playing it obvious he was a super pianist in his best days. Why he played on those pianos is a mystery to me.

The studio Decca of # 3 at YT is not worth hearing , a very, very pale reflection of his live, as often the case apparently with the Deccas.

I have no idea, and I understand Bolet did occasionally play Steinways, but I wonder if his affiliation with Baldwin dates from his early years when financially he needed a sponsor, before he became " famous " , and then loyalty rewarded after (?). The Marston contributors to that cd set could answer your inquiry.

Spotify (in US) does not have Bolet. They do have 22 of
Chopin-Godowsky done by Ivan Ilic and 18 done by Ian Hobosn. Nobody
has made those works palatable enough that I can stand listening them
for more than 5 minutes.

I had not realized Aimard had record all the LvB PC’s with Harnoncourt , Orchestra of Europe,released in 2003 on Teldec.Sharply differing Amazon -US reviews:

“On page 11 of the liner notes the question is asked, "why another complete recording of Beethoven's concertos?" Aimard answers that he would never have imagined recording these "warhorses." Well, there you go. They are played just so, like warhorses, plodding and abruptly bleating here and there over the course of 3 cds. Pass.”

“The sound of the piano is not nearly as highlighted as it is in most concerto recordings; rather it sounds like it does in a concert hall. This seems particularly so in the latter two concerti. This strikes me as apt, since the Fourth is a rather like a symphonic fantasia with piano obbligato and the Fifth--in distinction to its usual presentation as a grand Romantic concerto with heroic piano solo--is a symphony with piano. For this reason, the Fourth and Fifth are particularly successful.
The slow movements are generally slower than usually heard, and they all feature heavenly string playing from the COE. The muted strings in the slow movement of the Fifth are matched by Aimard's slightly covered sound and the effect is heavenly. One doesn't want it to end, but when the final chord in B major resolves downward to the B flat opening of the final movement it is like waking from a dream to find oneself in a fresh and wonderful new world--one of Beethoven's master-strokes served up perfectly by Harnoncourt and his musicians…In summary, then, this is one of the most successful Beethoven Concerto sets I've ever encountered.”
