I have very low expectations for the Trump people, but even considering
Trump's comments about assaulting women that were revealed during the
campaign, I was still left pretty gobsmacked by this outburst:

I'm not sure what you mean by that. We may not like what the
administration is doing, but the continuous reporting on cable
networks and the newspapers allows one to know *what* is being
attempted by the administration. My reasons for saying the
alternative is worse can be summed up by the article about the Franken
interview in the IB Times that appeared in the Washington Post. Here
is part of it:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Douglas Ernst - The Washington Times - Monday, June 19, 2017

Sen. Al Franken of Minnesota has a message for fellow Democrats who
yearn for President Trump’s impeachment: Be careful what they wish
for; they just might get it.
Mr. Franken told the International Business Times on Monday that those
hoping that the FBI’s investigation into Russia’s attempts to
influence the November presidential election will pave the way for
impeachment should consider Vice President Mike Pence’s policy
preferences.
“Pence ran the transition and some of the very worst nominees, I felt
— [Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott] Pruitt,
[Education Secretary Betsy] DeVos, [Health and Human Services
Secretary Tom] Price, [Office of Management and Budget Director Mick]
Mulvaney — were Pence selections, clearly, I think,” Mr. Franken said,
IBT reported Monday.

“He’s ideological, I consider him a zealot, and I think that in terms
of a lot of domestic policy certainly would be worse than Trump,” said
Mr. Franken, taking a break in Denver while promoting his book “Giant
of the Senate” to discuss work in Washington.

He knows his days are numbered and want to help his legacy. I'm fairly
certain the GOP is using Trump as cover for their plans to do away with
many policies that effect their donor class i.e. the Koch brothers,Sheldon
Addison et al. Once they've dismantled everything they can THEN they'll
turn on Trump.

I have many problems with Trump. The scariest is that he will attempt a coup.

He uses his family to govern. He tries to drive down the public image of the press. He values loyalty to him over any other trait. He sees the military as "his" military, and if you haven't heard, he replaced Priebus with General Kelly as White House Chief of Staff. The things he does are the things that a person would do to prepare a coup.

Yes, I just heard about his new Chief of Staff, but the one thing I
would not worry about with regard to Pres. Trump is his planning a
coup. That is not what he is about. I refer you back to two things I
posted a while back that explain to me why he does what he does.
The first is an article from last year before the election:
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/daniel-berger/trump-profile-of-a-sociopath_b_11318128.html
It's a long article but worth reading.

The second is this interview with Megyn Kelly, a short but very
revealing youtube moment:

The biggest wound that he suffered, and that is still festering, is
the public embarrasment that he was subjected to by Pres. Obama during
the White House Correspondents' Dinner in 2011. See it at

He is still trying to un-wound himself by erasing anything that he can
that Obama was responsible for.

And for what it's worth, I don't think the big mystery is whether or
not there was collusion between Trump surrogates and Russia. What I
think he is very concerned about is that Mueller will uncover some
very unsavory financial dealings with the Russian bank and/or people
who do business with that bank.

That's my take on why he acts the way he does. I think the
legislators are aware of his problems by now, and will just use him as
best they can to further their own political ideas and ensure that
their rice bowl stays full. YOMV.

I agree that Trump is a narcissistic sociopath with a thin skin and a psychopathic need to avenge himself when he thinks he has been wronged. I don't think he has an overriding goal to get at Obama though. He wants to get everybody who has ever opposed him.

I don't think Trump set out to execute a coup and it was either a coup or death for him. I think Trump is playing it by ear to see how much he can get. As he makes choices I think he chooses options that keep a coup open as a possibility.

I agree that he is seeing how much he can get; he's gaming the system
for himself and his family. I'm just wondering when his base will
start to mutter and mumble about the things he promised that aren't
happening. I keep visualizing a time within Trump's term when the
republican mavens will come to him and say that they can no longer
support him, and that it's time for him to resign. He would NEVER
allow himself to be wounded that way, and he will have to be
physically removed from the office. I remember seeing a photo in the
New York Daily News when I was a kid, this photo of Sewell Avery, the
Montgomery Ward Chairman, being removed: http://imgur.com/kqhAnLv
That's what they will have to do with Trump.

It seems that he thinks *all* government employees work for him. This
became apparent in January of this year when Trump, at a political
gathering of congressional Republicans, asked, “Where’s my C.I.A.
director?”.

And as a follow-up, Trump is not running wild as you suggest: from
today's Washington Post, see http://tinyurl.com/yaw43dzf
An excerpt:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Remember this day, July 28, 2017: The day Donald Trump became a lame
duck president. More significantly, the day the tea party revolution
ended and Washington began the return to “regular order.”...

This is a Waterloo moment for Trump, the tea party and their alliance.
They have been stopped in their tracks not only by Democratic
opposition but because of a mutiny within their own ranks. Although
never particularly liked or respected, it is now clear that they are
no longer feared. The bankruptcy of their ideas and their incompetence
have been exposed. Their momentum has been dissipated. Their rejection
of political norms has itself been scorned. Our long national
nightmare may finally be coming to an end.
