Discussion:
Email address

Following the historic decision of the Tesco People to leave the email
host market, I have been working hard to secure the best possible deal
for my email.

Texit offers exciting new opportunities for me to forge new
relationships with other providers and an important milestone has been
reached and a significant hurdle crossed today; I can announce that an
exciting new deal on email has been struck, the full details of which
are given in my post headers. Thoserats who sometimes email me directly
may wish to note the change in their address books; for the sake of
continuity, the old rules about the removal of Matron still apply.

My old address will still work during the Implementation Phase, but this
Phase will end on 10th October.

(I shall, of course, be allocating an extra £350 million per week to the
NHS as a result of this historic change.)

My edit seems to have survived so far - at least, I marked the page as
"watch", and haven't received any emails yet.

As for the workers ...

Although I am familiar with the phrase and its source, I would have
been about three or four at the time and thus almost certainly never
heard the original and won't have remembered if I had.

Does this mean I can count myself a Young Rat?

It's worth going through your last year's emails (or further back;
depends on how much time you want to spend!), both in and (if your
system stores copies of) out, seeing who you've missed.

As I said earlier, it's worth keeping a table of when you told people,
and when (or if!) they sent you a new email (_not_ a reply) using the
new address. Some people need telling several times - I found more
private individuals than companies.

Most email services offer some sort of "Out-of-Office" service. When I
abandoned Freeuk, many years ago, I left the account set to out of
office with my new email address in the message.

I'm not sure if "most" is correct for private ISP-type email systems.
Especially for the time required, which I'd say is at least a year.
(Unless you're willing to pay at least something for that year.)

It's still worth keeping the table as described above; some people don't
register the change of email, even if you tell them (sometimes, tell
them several times).

It's certainly important to stop _sending_ from your old address as soon
as possible, because some people (OK, my blind friend's perhaps unusual
in this respect, but not unique) send you emails by finding an email
from you, and hitting reply. Of course, you can't stop them doing that
with an _old_ email, but you can skew the probability,

Tesco have said that they will maintain that until October - so I have
left a message telling people that the address is dying. If people do
not contact me before October I am not sure I want to know them anyway!

The biggest problem is not me in fact it is wofe. I have had
unbelievable problems configuring her ipad mail app to stop using tesco
(I had been using another email address anyway for several years since I
acquired my own domain).

Apparently in the mind of Apple a default email address is not a default
email address. I cannot explain it - but I think she is now sending
emails only from her new email address.

My first email address was with Freeserve which eventually ended up with
EE who closed their email provision last year. They did provide pleanty
of notice but it took me ages to change everything I had used that email
address for and I forgot to check my iPad which had been registered
originally with that address as my Apple ID.

Although I had changed my Apple ID, it is apparently now impossible to
erase the iPad because the email address no longer exists. Lengthy
conversations with Apple have not been able to resolve this. It has
effectively cost me £55 as that would have been the part exchange value
set against the new iPad I have just bought.

That is interesting as we exchanged on upgrade last year on both iPads
and of course wiped them.

I might just back up the iPad and see if I can wipe it.

Well, you can't, apparently. I think Apple can probably do it for me but
ICBA to spend another hour on the phone with them. And it seems that I
wouldn't have got the part exchange value anyway as the iPad is not in
absolutely perfect condition, according to the manager at Western
Computers who examined it very carefully.

Laura, is your iPad grown whiskers? The current O/S allows a change of
default account. Settings/ mail/ default account. When you tap on default
account, you should then see all the email accounts you run, tap on the one
you wish to use and a tick appears by it. If the account you wish to be
default isn’t listed, then you may need to add this first.

I think there is a difference between the default account you describe
(which actually does not function as a default account) and the apple id
account needed to wipe the tablet. The two are not the same.

That is exactly the problem. The recommended fix was to change the ID to
the old email address but because that is defunct it was not recognised.

I'm sure that Apple can fix it but ICBA to devote the time to it at the
moment.

(I shall, of course, be allocating an extra £350 million per week to the
NHS as a result of this historic change.)
You'll be delighted to learn that I have no less confidence in your
ability to achieve this than I have with that other lot.

Will it work in Northern Ireland?

Not sure.
That's a borderline case.

I'm sure you are working on a magic technical solution.

Hurrah! I hope you're keeping Boris and Nigel informed of the success
of your decision and negotiations.
