How the Original ‘Star Trek’ Theme Landed in the ‘Discovery’ Finale
"It just seemed like the right thing to do," says composer Jeff Russo.
By Jon Burlingame

(Note: Spoilers ahead.) The season-finale cliffhanger of “Star Trek:
Discovery,” which aired Sunday on CBS All Access, contained a
startling revelation: the first sight of the USS Enterprise and a
reference to “Captain Pike” – the immediate predecessor of the more
famous Captain James T. Kirk of the original “Star Trek” series.

What’s more, it was accompanied by the right music: Alexander
Courage’s original “Star Trek” fanfare, followed by a stunning new
recording of Courage’s theme for the 1966-69 series, whetting audience
appetites for more of the Enterprise in season 2 of “Discovery.”

“It just seemed like the right thing to do,” says composer Jeff Russo
of invoking the famous eight-note “Trek” fanfare (which he also
excerpts in his own “Discovery” series theme). “It is the Enterprise,
so I must play the Enterprise’s theme.”

The bigger surprise was the fresh take on Courage’s ’60s “Trek” theme
that played under the end credits, performed by a 74-piece orchestra –
more than twice the 29 musicians that Courage had when he first
recorded the “Star Trek” theme in 1965.

I was a bit disappointed that we didn't meet the new Captain of the
Discovery. Will it be someone we know like Gabriel Lorca (from our own
Universe) or an unknow Captain? What do you think?

Poorly written, directed, and acted. They invoke the Awful Archer but
get him 50 years wrong, and Pike flies a bastardized movie ship?

They're not only working to undo the legacy of Kirk and Picard, but
Sisko as well.

And they don't even know what 'genocide' is - mark that down with
'literally' and 'decimate'

Speaking of which, I'm glad Jason Isaacs is dead.

alternate universe.

Since we know the Klingon planet wasn't destroyed in the original timeline,
it rendered moot any drama.

Pretty much, but they've always been in an alternate timeline.

BTW, the Admiral played Maureen Robinson in one of the terrible Lost in

I meant I wouldn't have minded them going the alternate universe route and
being stuck trying to get home ala Sliders. Georgieu could have nuked that
sucker just to be sure. :) Then had them discover this wasn't their

I never liked the fact they set this series 10yrs before the original and
that would have alleviated my complaint. I'm like yeah, right, no one in
original Trek or TNG or DS9 or Voyager ever heard about this war with the
Klingons or about a super secret starship with a "spore drive".

With technology like that they should have set it in the more distant
future.

They were so quick to write off Lorca-Prime as unlikely to have

back next season for at least a couple of episodes.

In the meantime he'll be rediscovering the supernatural powers of

They were so quick to write off Lorca-Prime as unlikely to have
survived on his own in the mirror uiniverse, that I suspect he'll be
back next season for at least a couple of episodes.
In the meantime he'll be rediscovering the supernatural powers of
interpretive dance in the (highly unexpected) second season of The OA.
There is to be another Season?
Wiki says: "A second season was ordered in October 2017."

I think they might have started filming, as I saw a recent picture of
Paz Vega with short hair like she had in the first season.

How the Original ‘Star Trek’ Theme Landed in the ‘Discovery’
Finale "It just seemed like the right thing to do," says
composer Jeff Russo. By Jon Burlingame
(Note: Spoilers ahead.) The season-finale cliffhanger of
“Star Trek: Discovery,” which aired Sunday on CBS All
Access, contained a startling revelation: the first sight of
the USS Enterprise and a reference to “Captain Pike” – the
immediate predecessor of the more famous Captain James T.
Kirk of the original “Star Trek” series.
Alexander Courage’s original “Star Trek” fanfare, followed
by a stunning new recording of Courage’s theme for the
1966-69 series, whetting audience appetites for more of the
Enterprise in season 2 of “Discovery.”
“It just seemed like the right thing to do,” says composer
Jeff Russo of invoking the famous eight-note “Trek” fanfare
(which he also excerpts in his own “Discovery” series
theme). “It is the Enterprise, so I must play the
Enterprise’s theme.”
The bigger surprise was the fresh take on Courage’s ’60s
“Trek” theme that played under the end credits, performed by
a 74-piece orchestra – more than twice the 29 musicians that
Courage had when he first recorded the “Star Trek” theme in
1965.
I was a bit disappointed that we didn't meet the new Captain
of the Discovery. Will it be someone we know like Gabriel
Lorca (from our own Universe) or an unknow Captain? What do
you think?
The last 30 seconds were good but the finale as a whole had to
be one of the worst written pieces of shit I ever saw.
You liked it a *lot* more than I did.
Strictly speaking, the average person likes being stabbed with a
fork a lot more than you like *anything*.

Speaking of which, I'm glad Jason Isaacs is dead.
He he, he's coming back next season.

The other STAR TREK captains all came back from death, so why not this one?

Hell, I recall an episode of TNG that blew up the Enterprise just
before every commercial break.

Not even once?

Of course, he wasn't really a captain since his ship was more like a
resort hotel...with a limo.

Well let's face it - a lot of Trek fans would have been overjoyed if
either Jake Sisko or Wesley Crusher had been detonated into nuclear
dust by the end of their respective series. Or transported onto the
deck of a Klingon ship whose crew had been enraged by Tribbles....

I was a bit disappointed that we didn't meet the new Captain of the
Discovery. Will it be someone we know like Gabriel Lorca (from our own
Universe) or an unknow Captain? What do you think?
After Trek tried to get the producers to say something about this, but
it's a big secret.

They also wouldn't let on to whether we'll see Lorca again.

In this article they say he will be back:

Am I missing something? That doesn't appear to be any different than all
the other articles teasing a "could" or "might" return. I honestly didn't
like any of the characters on board Discovery. The only one in the cast I
liked was Michelle Yeoh when she became Emporer Georgiou.

I was hoping Tyler was gone for good but that article does say they have big
plans for him. Uggghh.

About Isaacs It says:
"Isaacs is up for a return though and Kurtzman confirmed to EW following the
finale that Lorca could return (somehow) to the show, so we might be seeing
him again."

What's more, it was accompanied by the right music: Alexander
Courage's original STAR TREK fanfare, followed by a stunning new

Um... Courage's fanfare has been in the main title sequence since the

more than twice the 29 musicians that Courage had when he first

This has also been done before. Giacchino's scores to Abrams' TREK
reboots also have Courage's original theme re-recorded with full
orchestra in the end credits.

Maybe it's a bigger deal for the lower-budgeted TV show.

I thought it sounded really nice to have the full theme all at once. It
was really reminiscent of watching the closing credits of TOS. It would
have been even better if they'd also mimicked the way TOS showed stills
from the season under the credits.
