In today's installment of "No, really. They're serious about this shit", we
present CNN, which is reporting that gender bias extends to hurricanes.
Specifically, that since people don't take women seriously, they don't take
hurricanes with female names seriously, either, leading to lack of
preparedness and more deaths from female-named storms.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=8FgCLilQkJw

This is reminiscent of congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, when she
complained to NOAA that hurricane names are "too white sounding" and
requested that future storm names better represent black people. Presumably
she wants to see a Hurricane D'Andre or Hurricane L'Queesha.

How about hurricane Satan or Wolverine?
Maybe we should name hurricanes after literary bad guys?

Hurricane Sauron, Hurricane Dracula, Hurricane Mr.Myxlplyx, etc.

You're right, that's silly. However, it's also trivial. Because of
your particular brand of personality disorder, you ascribe importance to
things that should be dismissed as trivial. You do this over and over
and over and over. You really should ask your therapist about it.

Silly is silly, period.
Ditto, racist.

Bitching about hurricane names is silly, not racist. It's for people
that have no real problems to speak of.
Nobody takes it seriously... just like the bright idea to name snowstorms.

Hurricanes do significant damage. Snow storms rarely cause widespread
damage, and are frequently forgotten once the warm weather hits.

I'm lucky to remember 2 or 3 blizzards that were worth remembering.

Besides, I think you're more likely to say "that hurricane was a bitch"
which can be considered gender related. I'll bet CNN didn't mention that!!

Irma, on the other hand is way more frightening... especially if you've
read some Ian Fleming.

I hope not. BTW here's a good article about how and why they started
naming hurricanes:

https://weather.com/storms/hurricane/news/tropical-storm-hurricane-names-
20130626

There's a bit in there about how the Army/Navy phonetics list, which
was used to name hurricanes, was dropped in favor of the International
Phonetic Alphabet because the former was deemed "too Anglo-centric" --
and this was back in 1952.

Nothing new under the sun, as they say.

Isn't "silly" in the eye of the beholder, T? What some might see as
"silly" others might see as "racist" or a "microaggression."
Sure, it's a matter of opinion. But do you really thing people have or
are taking Harvey more seriously than Irma? Come on.
I thought that comment Ms. Lee made referred to racism not sexism.

Though I agree that worrying about the actual names of hurricanes is a
little silly but that is just me.
So you agree but you're playing Devil's advocate? Whatever floats your
boat.
I just wonder if Ms. Lee really expected to be taken seriously.
Why does it matter?
Well... *she* MAKES laws. Thanny *bitches* about them.
I'd say it matters ;-)
Yes, but what I meant was if it's just an off the cuff remark why does
it need scrutiny?
For the same reasons that Hillary's emails needed scrutiny. Lots and
lots of scrutiny... that way, we don't think and talk about the real
problems in this country.

We're too busy looking at the distractions they throw at us.

Yes, and like Hillary, women in politics aren't supposed to be allowed
to speak. Not when you have quality men like Steve Bannon running
Breitbart.

Thanny only halfway 'tries' to. Never does he actually succeed, because he doesn't use high-end references (like the New York Times, Washington Post, NPR or CNN).

You're right, that's silly. However, it's also trivial. Because of
your particular brand of personality disorder, you ascribe importance to
things that should be dismissed as trivial. You do this over and over
and over and over. You really should ask your therapist about it.
Isn't "silly" in the eye of the beholder, T? What some might see as

The deadliest hurricane of all was 'Galveston' at the turn of the century in 1900. Now is that a guy or gal's name?

Why the fuck is this CNN's problem?
All they're doing is *reporting* on the results of a study written up in
"The Proceedings National Academy of Sciences".

That's part of CNN's job, stupid or not. All news has some fluff to pad
their hard reporting. This was a puff piece. And what the fuck does
this have to do with "liberalism"?

He never included any context from CNN's reporting, so we have no idea
what the thought was behind the piece. Talk about shoddy "reporting".

But, on the bright side, now that I've seen the Youtube video, I can now
put a face and voice to Thanny's posts!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=8FgCLilQkJw&app=desktop

Watch it, and tell me you won't see and hear that guy in Thanny's next
post. Especially where he's wearing the glasses with the tape over the
bridge.

This is nothing more than another case of manufactured outrage. You
notice the right wing rarely tackles a story like how tax cuts
"magically" pay for themselves, and how giving rich fucks more money
somehow "creates jobs".

Please don't tell me that you think D'Andre is only a black name. Just copy Eddie Murphy with the 'Bubba, Willie and Tyrone' spiel if you have trouble making everything up and you're too lazy to visit african newspaper sites for their common names.

absolutely everything.

If they'd been giving hurricanes 'black names' all along, she'd be
bitching that naming something so destructive after black people is
racist.

Commenting on it /= butthurt
You post about it incessantly.
More like comment about it when it occurs. If it's incessant, that
should tell you something about the grievance brigade.
And I get it. It's annoying to have people bitch about others expressing
their freedom of speech. But that's what these folks are doing, too. And

attention everytime they say something stupid.

In today's installment of "No, really. They're serious about this
shit", we present CNN, which is reporting that gender bias extends
to hurricanes. Specifically, that since people don't take women
seriously, they don't take hurricanes with female names seriously,
either, leading to lack of preparedness and more deaths from
female-named storms.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=8FgCLilQkJw
This is reminiscent of congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, when she
complained to NOAA that hurricane names are "too white sounding"
and requested that future storm names better represent black
people. Presumably she wants to see a Hurricane D'Andre or
Hurricane L'Queesha.
Except for the apostrophes, what's the objection?
The objection is the race-ification and grievance mongering of
absolutely everything.
If they'd been giving hurricanes 'black names' all along, she'd be
bitching that naming something so destructive after black people is
racist.
There is literally no appeasing the race hustlers of the world.
So, shake your head, shrug your shoulders and move on. Why get
butthurt about what any of these people say?

Well, that's always the response to those who call for censorship, isn't
it?

The counter to ignorant, hateful, and stupid speech is *more* speech.
Call it out when you see it; expose it for the bullshit that it is.

You mean like how CNN exposed HanAsshole for the racist anti-Semite he

I don't remember you being in favor of *more* free speech then.
As I recall, you wanted to hold CNN legally liable for their accurate
reporting... c'ause it hurt a racist anti-Semite's "feelings"...

As I recall, you were a bit butt-hurt. For days.

Shouldn't they give hurricanes gender neutral names? Aren't the powers that be arbitrarily imposing a gender upon this hurricane? After all, what if Hurricane Irma identifies as a male? What if Hurricane Jose wants to be transgendered, or binary non-gender, or gender fluid? The people at the National Hurricane Center have already decided Jose is a male and has absolutely no choice in his gender. Hurricane Jose should be whatever gender he wants to be and nobody should assign him a name that suggests a particular gender.

Oh, cripes, I love that movie, even if it is a little bit too long.

Anyway, Leslie is a female name. They alternate male and female, and
the 2018 list goes Joyce, Kirk, Leslie, Michael. (And, yeah, Michael
Learned on THE WALTONS was a woman. On topic!)

Hurricane Kirk is going to screw Joyce and Leslie while laying waste
to, well, everything around him. No Shat, no storm!

What I actually said, in context, was that it is a female name on the
2018 list because it's between two male names. That would have been
clear if you hadn't snipped the rest of what I'd posted.

Hmmm I knew a Lesley Walton in high school.....she was a cutie of the
reddish-blonde sort. Too bad for me I hadn't figured out 'the art of
the chase' until somewhat later. Saw her two years ago at a class
reunion. More wrinkles of course but still looking great.
