I've got one of the original Limited Edition 4-disc Laserdisc sets of
the movie, including a CD of the music. Don't remember from what year,
but it HAS to be more than 15 years ago.

I think I remember some comments about the DVD issue of ET having some
editing or other changes done to it.

Can anybody comment on that? I'd like to be sure I have an un-tainted
copy of the movie.

Many thanks.

If I recall correctly, when E.T. was re-release to theaters a few years
back there was some censoring that modified some of the details in
scenes.

I remember that there was a big deal that dialogue of the male
protagonist had been changed to not have him say the word "terrorists"
and several scenes that had government agents carrying guns were changed
to have them carry walkie-talkies.

Perhaps the relevant IMDB page will list more changes between the
original and re-release home video versions.

I seem to recall there was a scene in which guns were somehow
removed from the hands of the holders and walkie-talkies were
substituted.

Ah, I'm correct. Googling "et censored gun scene" finds:
