Went down the entire first page of recently dead people and didn't recognize the name of a single one of them. Man, am I out of touch - and man am I ever glad.

No need to feel so out of it, Tommy--no matter how good that might feel.

It just so happens that few notables known to us in the West have expired over the last couple of weeks. But hang on--this can't last. (I just hope none of us are soon to be rostered...)

Thanks. Well, actually, today's page did produce the name of one recent corpse that I recognized, George the Animal Steel, pro wrestler. I mean seriously, what is the good of famous people dying - where is the joy? - where is the excitement? - when you've never heard of them. It's like you have to keep up with all the untalented but famous nobodies of today just so you can 'share' in the wonder and joy of their deaths. But you're right, every so often a goodie comes along. And the younger and more shocking the better.

Well, if you're read a few of my wordy mini-essays, you know I can't get onboard with the celebration of anyone's demise, notable or not. So while I can't agree that "the younger and more shocking the better", I can certainly concur that such events are certainly more INTERESTING.

In any event, Tommy, I'm glad to see your sardonic postings again; your perspective is an unusual one indeed.

Thanks, glad to see you're glad to see I'm still alive. But you never know when the Big D might hit. It's sickening. Just when we get to the point where we know enough to just kick back and relax, we die. The only advantage, or one of the few to getting old, I mean really old, are the chances that anything you buy will last a lifetime. 3 years ago when I had the cash I bought 9 pairs of $40 sneakers, nice and comfy, figuring I might die within 3 years. But I'm still here and soon I'll have to go shoe shopping all over AGAIN. Bastards.

Responded to this post the other day but am doing it again to say I never used the word 'celebrate' regarding the death of a famous person I have never met, although it sometimes comes close. You used the word 'interesting', a good choice - and there is without question a very fine line between interesting and entertaining. For example, when the WTC towers went down, people were tuned in for days watching the same old revolving tape of those planes going slow motion into the buildings. I don't blame them, it was riveting. It was also entertaining. When people are told that, of course they rebel against the term because it implies they enjoyed watching a bunch of people die at one time. I caused a real stir on the old comedy group when I called it entertainment, and I genuinely believe it falls into that category in some way even if not in traditional form. When a person turns on the TV and chooses to watch something more than once, that is entertainment of some form, like it or not, as tuning in isn't going to help anyone else in any way. What are they doing, examining the film over and over for clues so they can assist the government in some way? Of course not, they are watching it over and over again because it is fascinating, aka interesting, aka entertaining in some way - period, end of story, no debate.

Man, I enjoyed typing this - I am truly entertained and I hope you are too,

You are just about the most childish thing to pass through. Only in your ill fantasies am I possibly attracted to women, to give you a chance to have your hairy, ape-like way with me. You stalk, you fantasize about me, at times you can think of nothing else Get some help. Because really, the idea that I am your lesbian love interest is major creepy. Don't you have a husband? I have no knowledge of the events in question but your comments, especially using the term "a close and good friend" reminds me of the old standup comedy group I used to visit 15 years ago. It was a really active and fun spot. But every so often someone would post about someone dying or being ill and in the hospital, and it never failed to make me laugh and also sicken me when others would post responses such as, "Oh my God, no, one of my dearest friends - does anyone have his telephone number or know how I can get in touch with him?"

That always made me laugh. Now I realize of course that a person can really like or even love another person they haven't seen or heard from in a while, but the term "friend" is really overused, even back before Facebook took it to a higher and more disgusting level. And when someone would die the condolences would roll in one after the other, almost all of them the same - "He will be missed", or, "There will never be another like him", or whatever. I don't mind condolences but it was a comedy newsgroup and I would have preferred, and sometimes got, actual stories about the dead or ill person rather than just a few cursory words of imitative sorrow.

TJ
Jazee, since you have no knowledge of things in question, let me explain.

Like many of us, I no longer live where I grew up, but I have maintained friendships with many people who I knew from childhood and teenage years. Also, people from college. With the advent of the internet, in the 1990s, I was able to keep in touch with people I always kept in touch with AND also people I renewed friendships. When I did visit my old hometown and surrounding area, I visited a multitude of friends and kept in touch with them my email, instant messenger etc.

I have paid tribute to friends of mine who have died and placed thoss tributes on alt.obituaries because #1, I wanted to and #2, I've seen other posters do the same about friends and relatives.

I count at least a half dozen or so friends (including my brother-in-law) where cathy has responded in a cruel and disrespectful manner to the death of people I was grieving. In most cases, the standard lines from cathy in response were, "who cares?" and "he is probably glad he died so he doesn't have to know you anymore". I guess I should be "grateful" that he refrained from such insults when I posted about my parents' deaths (2009 and 2012).

The friend that Sarah is referring is one of those friends that I had renewed a friendship with around 2000 or so. We emailed a lot, spoke on the phone, exchanged photos and chatted on Yahoo Messenger. I knew him since elementary school, jr high, and high school. We lived within a mile of each other, and we use to hang out together. He retired at a fairly early age and traveled a lot. He started having some physical problems about a year or so before he died. They didn't appear to be life threatening (at least he didn't tell me they were). I was becoming an active grandparent, we didn't communicate as much. When I realized that I hadn't heard from him in a few months, I sent him an email. His brother saw the email and then replied that he had died. Why no one else had told me before that, I don't know, except that I didn't have any mutual email buddies with him.

So, I wrote a short remembrance about him and posted on alt.obituaries. My one mistake (in hindsight) was stating that I had just found out about my friend's death. This was like throwing raw meat to a hyena, and cathy made his comments that the person couldn't possibly be a friend if I didn't know the same day that the he died.

What you have to realize, jazee, is that cathy is a mean, heartless, miserable, despicable, misanthrope who constantly mocks and ridicules people here. It's not just me that he does this to. However, he has done it many times. I no longer post about any one who has died that I knew personally. I don't want to receive cathy's constant cruelty.

Oh, and one more thing...Sarah Ehrett is little more than a cathy sycophant.

Oh, and one more thing...Sarah Ehrett is little more than a cathy sycophant.
I am not going to argue or take sides although I have opinions of my own. It is not about your personally or anyone in particular - I just think it is funny, and was funny on the comedy newsgroup, when someone would die and the condolences would pour in along with comments similar to the one I mentioned - "Oh my God, he was like my best friend - how long ago did this happen? - does anyone have his phone number? - how can I get in touch with him?", etc. Yes, I do think that is funny but (oh God what a diplomat I am), at the same time I understand what you mean about keeping up with old friends, etc. At the same time (again), I do think the term 'friends' is overused in society and especially now on Facebook, a place I truly despise and never go to unless I get a notification from one of two friends I have on the board, and I'm thinking about exing those out as well. I mean, if those people really want to talk with me they can do so via email, not some stupid grand central station like Facebook where everyone thinks they're the head conductor of the train. I too enjoy when people die or fall to tragedy in some way. But they have to be famous. Or they can be unfamous and their deaths can still be funny if their tragic moment is odd or ironic in style, such as a dancer losing their legs or a singer getting throat cancer - you know what I mean.

Sorry, I'm an outsider when it comes to newsgroup disputes although I might tend to side one way or another while at the same time staying out of it. This is not my regular newgroup anyway. You should see the one I frequent, it's the deadest newsgroup on the planet. This place is alt. obituaries and is about death one way or another but is quite lively in number of posts, etc. while the one I frequent has 3 or 4 posters tops and is basically a graveyard where I guess you could say I'm a big corpse in a little cemetery. Thanks for your response.

I will click on the link and check it out but must be honest and tell you that when someone recommends a book of any kind, their own or someone that of someone else, my first question is, "How many pages?" I will click on your link and check out the book but have to let you know that generally when someone recommends a book to me, their own of that of someone else, my first response is usually, "How many pages?, as I don't have a long attention span (unless the book is about ME), and am not much of a reader except for occasional short stories, the shorter the better, and the newspaper (and I don't mean the bullcrap political stuff on the front page which is the least important and least honest page in the paper. Even for those who don't like sports, at least they should admit that the sports page is more honest and factual than the front page, except for when the political crap is usurped by natural or man-made disasters which force the political crap back a few pages. I will click on the link and check it out. Thanks.

I enjoy reading reviews more than what's being reviewed. Sorry. I am 69 but do not consider myself a piece of any one generation or decade. In fact I hated a lot of the stuff from the 60s including the music. I liked older stuff from the 30s and 40s but was open to just about anything. I hate when people try to pigeon hole me into any one era, especially the decade people, you know, the "You're from the 60s, aren't you?" I noticed over the years that what most people like music and otherwise generally took place in their late teens or early 20s. At that age I was already putting down most of what I heard around me (while remaining hiddenly open to it). My tastes change. I am even open the garbage of today. And yes, most of it is garbage, just as most of anything from any era is garbage with a bit of something special shining through now and then. But I would have to say music wise that I really do not care for what's popular these days. That does not mean I don't like some of what's around today, just not so much the popular stuff. But then I wasn't much into popular stuff even back in my early years. I like good obscure stuff but give credit to the occasional good stuff that creeps in today now and again. Enjoyed reading the reviews of your book. A negative review tossed in might have given more credibility to the good ones. Yes, I love reading bad reviews, two thumbs down stuff. I can read a bad review of a movie and know just from how it's written that I might like the movie, or read a good one about a movie and know that it sucks just from the way the review is written even if not intended by the person who wrote it.

I have been visiting this thread only because I started it and my loneliness demands my participation in the hopes that maybe one of those involved will speak directly to me in a good or even bad way, doesn't matter. But now, now politics have been brought into the thread, and that is indeed a good excuse, the best excuse, to get out and never come back. Never voted, never will, and think that those who do vote are idiots, and even worse, those who tell others to vote or who to vote for are even bigger idiots who do not deserve my attention.

Nothing phony about me. I do like being alone, at least in the sense that I'd rather be alone than have company I can't get rid of. No one likes being completely alone all the time. But I was referring to words, not people when I said I'd like someone to speak to me in a good or even bad way, not saying I wanted to move in with someone or have them move in with me. I am the least phony person I know, and I know my share.

Again, twisting of words. I said the introduction of politics into this thread gave me an excuse to leave this thread and never come back, I didn't say it was going to happen. This is how arguments start, with the twisting of words. And from arguments come fist fights, and from those come wars. Are you looking for world war 3? If so, I'll blow your world apart.

marcus is having more wet dreams about Trump getting impeached because
Keith Ellison is running for the chair of the DNC.

Here's hoping "Imam" Ellison makes it so that the Douchocrats lose even
more seats in Congress and at the state level. This will ensure the
Douchocrats remain a coastal elite party active in a couple of counties
only. Meanwhile the Republicans will purge the party of the RINO's and
obtain supermajoirities for at least a generation.

I haven't read a autobiography since my RPI years. I did read Gary
Byrne's " Crisis of Character" last year and it might as well have
been an autobiography about Byrne himself. Never finished it.
Complete garbage because of both the author and the subject matter.

Oh, didn't mean to imply it was - just being honest and saying upfront that I rarely read books in full and would likely not make an exception for yours. But I wish you luck with it and maybe one day I'll check it out in a book store - take a camera in and photograph each page and taking them home to paste together to form a book without having to pay for it. I can't understand how people pay $20 and $30 and even more for books. I wouldn't understand it even if they were buying one written by me - or maybe even especially one written by me. At least I read the reviews. So please give me some credit for effort.

Oh, so now you're accusing me of 'using' a routine to get by in life. Not in this case. I find this thread interesting because I started it and it proves one thing - everyone in it, especially those who help keep it alive, are entertained by conflict whether they are willing to admit it or not. It thrives only for that reason, yet I am compelled to tune into it every day because for the past three days it has been the #1 thread on the board, which at first amazed me because my initial post was nothing special. It was only after the bickering threesome got into the act that it bloomed and grew into what it is now. But I started it and will take some of the credit.

Are you implying that I am an asskisser or some kind of phony diplomat because I spoke somewhat kindly to one of those involved in the ongoing bickerage? I just made that word up, something I do all the time with words. I am far from an asskisser and a phony and am not afraid to take sides or speak my mind. But in this particular case it would be unfair of me to do that as I don't know the facts (and don't care to) behind the ongoing friendly feud. Admit it, you all love it - including even Marcus. I love it because I started it even though I readily admit that it thrives not because those involved are hypnotized by me but rather by the ongoing conflict of the main 3 - Marcus, Ehrett, and Ehrett's secret lesbian lover, whatever his or her name is. This bugs me in one way, knowing I am not the true catalyst for the ongoing thread, yet makes me happy in a way to know that I started the thread and made it all possible in the same way that God makes all things possible. I am truly a God among men (and women), and I resent your implication that I am an asskissing fraud. It seems to disturb you that I am not taking sides. In fact, it seems you prefer to automatically assume that I am somehow opposing you simply because I spoke somewhat nicely to one of your enemies. As for me, I have no enemies - unless you want to make one of me. But I don't think you want to do that because I am the sort to take things beyond the newsgroup. I have killed people for less. I am not saying I will kill you or anyone else, although, well, although it would be a nice thing to add to my bucket list before I finally kick it. Just kidding. I love you all. I love everyone. Man, I love life. And life loves me.

Uh...the $2 bill has been around for many decades, although its current incarnation--with a depiction of the signing of The Declaration of Independence on the reverse--was only introduced, I believe, in the late 1970s. (Prior to that, the $2 bill had--like its counterpart coinage the nickel--Monticello on its reverse, though the front was that same portrait of our 3rd President--and 2nd Vice President!--Thomas Jefferson.)

At Monticello's ticket counter, they'll happily exchange your Lincoln or Hamilton for a couple or few Jeffersonian $2 bills, as they always keep a supply of crisp ones at the ready.

Oh, and the familiar expression is "phony as a THREE-dollar bill"...although in St. Louis--or at least in southwest suburban St. Louis during the '60s and '70s--the simile was often phrased, "queer as a three-dollar bill".

(And yes, as a pal has pointed out, it's possible that that latter formulation was only applied to me back in those days, and usually only behind my back. But sure I hope not.)

Marc
Oh, didn't mean to imply it was - just being honest and saying upfront that I rarely read books in full and would likely not make an exception for yours. But I wish you luck with it and maybe one day I'll check it out in a book store - take a camera in and photograph each page and taking them home to paste together to form a book without having to pay for it. I can't understand how people pay $20 and $30 and even more for books. I wouldn't understand it even if they were buying one written by me - or maybe even especially one written by me. At least I read the reviews. So please give me some credit for effort.
TJ
Hey, it's only 218 pages....but yes, thanks for reading the reviews, including the one written by "cathy", who didn't read the book.

He didn't threaten to do it; he stated that he had done it. And there
actually was one bad review posted using a handle that everyone here,
present company excepted, recognizes him as. It wasn't the only negative
review of the book that there was. It wasn't a threat, or a plan, but a
confession. Or a boast, if you prefer.

Because that's the handle he used to create his Amazon account months or
years previously? And because he isn't very smart?

Sarah, are you saying that he Clintoned in November when he
confessed/boasted about posting a bad review of Marcus's book, or are you
saying that he Clintoned today when he stated that he never posted one?

I didn't say that. The anonymity of Usenet allows people to say all
sorts of things. That doesn't make it true. I believe Cathy said she
put a bad review of the book to tweak you, to yank your chain. That
gives anyone who doesn't like Cathy or you, including the trolls from
your music groups who reading AO picked up on the TE issues, the
perfect opportunity to go and do a bad review and sign it TE.

I don't know why you can't even entertain that as a possibility.

Or, he did make the review, and he Clintoned yesterday about not making

You don't have to go through anything, Sarah. I pointed out yesterday that
Ellsworth Clintoned either about posting a bad review or about never
posting a bad review. You've now agreed with me on that. So why you put
yourself in charge of defending someone accused of being a Clintoner when
you in fact agree with the accusation is beyond me.

I have many disagreements with Marcus. This is a surprise revelation to no
one. I doubt I would like his book, but I certainly don't wish him or the
book ill. If other people buy it and like it, that doesn't affect me one
iota, so why should I care? Why should I root for it to fail? Are people
really that petty? Are you? And I think it's a terrible thing to do to
post a bad review of his book purely to spite him - which your buddy
claimed he did.

and you say, "Does it matter?"
Yes, what does it matter, David? Why go through all this again?
We're dealing with petty, mean-spirited individuals when dealing with cathy and Sarah.

But it's OK, David, what goes around...comes around.

And I answered you by saying, " This absolutely *has * to be the FIRST
TIME anyone *ever* *ever* said they did something on Usenet but
didn't. "
I thought that was pretty clear but apparently not. So here you go, my
answer.
Post by David Carson
Sarah, are you saying that he Clintoned in November when he
confessed/boasted about posting a bad review of Marcus's book,
Yes. And I think it is certainly possible that someone else seeing
Cathy's post made the comment on Amazon and signed it TE.
Handstands.
No solid proof.
Post by David Carson
Or, he did make the review, and he Clintoned yesterday about not making
it. Either way, he told a Clinton about it. That's all I'm saying. If you
want to delude yourself about him not being Ellsworth, that's fine, but it
doesn't change the fact no matter which way you look at it, "cathycartee1"
was caught telling a Clinton.
People on Usenet tell lies all the time, David.

Since no one here has to show solid proof of their accusations I
guess you'll be calling me Ken.

Fine. I'm sorry it sorted out this way.

I accused him of telling a Clinton. You agreed that he did. As far as I'm
concerned, we're done here. Anything else you want to make of it is
totally up to you.

I've never left a review of your "book." Don't flatter yourself. I don't give you the time of the day although you're clearly obsessed with me, asshat.

You won't even get an obit Marcus, no one will realize you're dead.
Left another bad review for that crappy book of yours today.

(Note that the only bad review at that time was left by "TerryE")
Why would Cathy leave a review and sign it TerryE. ? Sounds more like
something someone else on AO would do or someone on the Beatles group.
The bigger question is why he would post that he left a review and then
post that he never left a review.
BINGO!!!

What a duo of liars, cathy and Sarah are.

Most people know that cathy is actually a guy named Terry, who bragged that he left a bad review of my book on purpose. And Sarah, who is actually a guy named Ken, ass kisses anything that cathy says.

However, there is a glimmer of hope for those two...with their ability to lie, and then continue to lie when the truth is known, they may be able to get a job in the Trump administration.

Although, there is

Hey, it's only 218 pages....but yes, thanks for reading the reviews, including the one written by "cathy", who didn't read the book.
Only? Hey, I have tried to read short stories by the 'masters' and found myself getting antsy. And if you think I'm impatient or have no attention span, how about the idiots on facebook and so forth who at this point of my paragraph would already be screaming that I'm going on too long. Thanks for thanking me about reading the reviews. I do that with movies too. Most movies suck, especially nowadays. I'd rather read the reviews, if anything at all. But even those have become boring. I especially hate it when a movie reviewer can't critique a film without referencing another film that came before - or when they say something really stupid (and they all use the same method), in trying to get the reader to understand what they're trying to say about a particular film by saying, "Think Batman meets Love Story", or some such shit. I am guilty of using examples as well, but I am not getting paid for what I write.

Cathy mocked *you* because you wrote you didn't know for months a
close and good friend had died. You got your feelings hurt. AO
isn't a hug smooch kiss newsgroup. Get over it marcus. Sometimes
you have the emotional maturity of a 4 year old who's goldfish died.
Oh, one more thing, I can tell you are seriously offended by the length of your post, and have noticed in other newsgroup and in text correspondence in general that when my posts are longer than usual it's usually because I'm really concerned with making a point. But you don't need to make a point with me as I understand what you're talking about and there is no need for you to convince me that you feel offended as I already know that. I appreciate your effort to explain the sitch', but to me it's like what's the diff', dig? Just kidding. While I undertand your point and realize you are serious, at the same time I sometimes enjoy reading disputes between people as long as they don't bog down in redundant bullshit which is usually the case although not always. I love a good argument between 'other people', like going to a heavyweight prizefight for the championship of the world and not having to pay to get in..........Thanks again.

"...she(he) takes great pleasure reveling in the deaths of people she doesn't know."
You just described "cathy".
I think she just described everybody whether they are willing to admit it or not. We all have a bit of the ghoul in us, no exceptions.
